The 10 Best Lamborghinis Ever Built

Italy’s most iconic Bulls!

One of the most iconic sports car manufacturers, Lamborghini was born out of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s frustration over a bad experience with a Ferrari he bought and the way Enzo treated him. Having built tractors since 1948, Ferruccio decided he could do a better sports car and launched Automobili Lamborghini in 1963. But while Ferrari has produced over 50 nameplates to date, Lambo remained a lower profile carmaker. Sant’Agata has only produced 21 models up until 2018, including some limited-edition nameplates based on existing supercars.

Some became iconic from day one, while some gained notoriety as they became classics, A few of them remain somewhat anonymous due to the period they were launched or their subpar performance. Still, there are plenty of cars to choose from to round up a Top 10 list, and we did just that. It includes both modern and classic models, but I went for specific versions instead of nameplates, as these usually spanned over many years and included many different iterations. The world of EVs is ever growing, and as we near a time when there will be no gas to fill our tanks, we realized some of the world’s best-sounding and glorious engines will have to be ditched in favor of electric power. Think of an electric Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, or Lamborghini... does it sound good? Or rather, does it make any sound at all?

With the advent of electrification in the business of car building, you see every major manufacturer scramble to put together a lineup of eco-friendly electric vehicles as a statement of their forward-thinking plans and their bias towards the future of mobility. It all looked foolish almost 20 years ago when Honda introduced the original hybrid Insight, which was shortly followed by Toyota’s Prius, but today, this seems to be the trend that will sell. For some, it might be a marketing ploy to appease a new section of the market, but you can’t dismiss the trend altogether.

Audi just took the wraps off its first fully-electric car, the E-Tron. Mercedes was doing the same just a few weeks ago with its EQC, and just about any manufacturer you can think of has a mid- to long-term plan for at least hybrid, if not electric. For instance, Aston-Martin is looking forward to the year 2030, by which time the British manufacturer’s stable should be made up exclusively of electric cars. Ferrari, well-known for their devotion to making their cars sound perfect, is planning a 60 percent hybridization of its lineup in just four year’s time. You can imagine a Ferrari EV isn’t that far off in the future, then.

All this got us thinking - which cars would you never want to see without a growling V-8, or maybe a high-revving V-12 under the hood? Which car’s move from gas to electric sounds like blasphemy to you? Crossovers are vehicles designed to look like they can go off-road, but really be at their best on the road. Sure, some can do light off-roading, but realistically you won’t want to stray too far from the blacktop or the occasional bumpy gravel backroad.

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is the most extreme iteration of the company’s range-topping supercar. The SVJ combines the complex aerodynamic systems first introduced on the Huracan Performante with the "Jota" badge, first used on the Miura and then revived for the Diablo. A Roadster version of the SVJ will follow in 2019.

Lambo has yet to confirm that a drop-top version of SVJ is underway, but has already sent a certification request to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for such a model. The SVJ Roadster is one of four cars certified by CARB for the 2019 model year. This also means that the drop-top is only a few months away and will likely to break cover in early 2019. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is the most powerful and aggressive version of the company’s flagship supercar. Four years ago, Italian coach builder Zagato unveiled the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato, a one-off creation that spawned into a limited edition series because deep-pocketed customers couldn’t get enough of it. Fast forward to 2018, and we could be in for a case of déjà vu. Sitting on Zagato’s website for all the world to see is a rendering of the Lamborghini L595 Zagato, a droptop version of the 5-95 Zagato that we saw in 2014. It’s unclear if Zagato has plans to build this version, but the image was accompanied by “2018,” a sign that we could see this car come to life sometime this year.

The Gallardo Performante gets a successor at last!

The Lamborghini Huracan made its public debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It replaced the Gallardo, the company’s best-selling model as of 2018, in the lineup and became Lambo’s entry-level supercar. Slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, the Huracan employs a different styling language compared to the Gallardo, featuring lines derived from the range-topping Aventador. The design includes sharper cues, more pronounced side skirts, and a more aggressive stance overall. Under the hood, the 5.2-liter V-10 was updated for more horsepower and improved fuel economy. In 2017, Lamborghini launched the higher performance Performante model, and a Spyder version broke cover at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Three years have passed since the Huracan was unleashed on public roads and the supercar is already highly popular, selling more than 8,000 units since its introduction. The Performante Spyder arrives to close the circle of the Huracan family, which now includes two coupes, two convertibles, and two race-spec models. The Performante name returns after long hiatus, as it was originally introduced on the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, essentially a convertible version of the Gallardo Superleggera. The high-performance drop-top was launched in 2011 and remained in production until the Gallardo was phased out in 2013. As you might have already guessed, the Performance Spyder adds infinite headroom to the Performante’s record-setting performance. And it’s almost as quick!

2018 is shaping up to be a big year for Lamborghini. This is the year the Urus SUV goes on sale, becoming only the second Lamborghini SUV in history after the Hummer-like LM002 enjoyed a seven-year run from 1986 to 1993. To be clear, the expectations for the Urus are much higher than they ever were for the LM002. Lamborghini expects its new SUV to spearhead another record-breaking sales year, and by all accounts, the Urus is more than capable of doing that. Just don’t expect Lambo to start having illusions of building another SUV model to complement what it already has. That’s not happening, at least not in the near future.

Kia Pits The Forte Against The Lamborghini Aventador in Hilarious Ad

Korean automaker makes a lot of fair points!

The Kia Forte and the Lamborghini Aventador are two cars that couldn’t be more different from each other. One is a compact four-door sedan while the other is, well, you know what the Aventador is. On the surface, the Aventador beats the Forte in just about every meaningful discussion. But is the Lamborghini really that much better than the Forte? Kia (obviously) doesn’t think so, and believe it or not; it actually makes a compelling case for its own sedan.

Go ahead and watch the video. Tell me you didn’t get a good laugh out of it. I certainly did. Kia’s justifications for the Forte are all fair. The sedan does have two more doors than the supercar. It also has a big advantage in rear seating, cargo space, touch-screen capability, and wireless charging. It even has the Aventador beat in fuel efficiency and cost. It’s true that you can buy a Forte for a tenth of the price of an Aventador. You can even use the money you saved on something else, including that villa in Italy the voice-over guy suggested. By these metrics, the Forte wins hands down!

In all seriousness, the “rivalry” between the Forte and Aventador is tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek humor. Give credit to Kia for thinking outside the box with the angle for this commercial. It takes a certain kind of confidence to roll out an Aventador opposite a Forte, and then actually make a compelling case for the latter as the better car.

Well done, Kia. It’s a great commercial, though, I think it would’ve probably been better if you saved this one for Super Bowl LII. Just a thought.

But even though it’s Lambo’s first SUV, the Urus isn’t the first utility vehicle coming from Sant’Agata Bolognese. Lamborghini began meddling with the idea all the way back in 1977 and launched its first production model in 1986 as the LM002. That’s a few good years before AM General introduced the iconic Hummer H1 for civilian use in 1992.

In many ways, the LM002 is the spiritual successor of the Urus, but the two utility vehicles are actually very different. They were conceived for different purposes, have radically different designs, and deliver different performance figures. Table For Two: Comparing The Lamborghini Urus And The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Is the 707-horsepower Jeep a better bet than the Lambo?

The hype surrounding the Lamborghini Urus is real. It’s not just that the Urus is 650-horsepower horsepower; it’s because the Urus is a Lamborghini. The legendary Italian supercar brand has only released one SUV in its lifetime — the LM002 — and back then, SUVs weren’t as popular as they are now. That’s why the Urus is being talked about in glowing terms, even if it hasn’t been launched yet.

But is it really the most exciting SUV to hit the streets in recent memory? That’s a debatable question because there are others of its kind that are just as appealing, for one reason or another. The Bentley Bentayga is one of them. So is Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. But for the purpose of this discussion, I’m turning my attention to an American SUV that can give the Urus a serious run for its money. It may not have the same prestige as the Urus, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is every bit as potent as its Lamborghini counterpart.

Which of the two is better? That’s a question I’m looking to answer. Be advised, though. This isn’t a walk-over for the Lamborghini like some of you might think.

A Raging Bull with some space for stuff

The SUV assault continues, filtering into every niche of every market imaginable. With so much demand out there, just about every automaker on the planet is getting in on the action, including some with a history that deviates quite a bit from the SUV norm. That includes Lamborghini, which just unveiled the Urus, a follow-up to the cult classic LM002. This time around, Lambo is doing it right, giving the Urus super car-esque agility, speed, and performance, all with a sharp (yet jacked-up) body style crammed with luxury and even a little off-road worthiness. Lambo is calling it the first Super Sport Utility Vehicle, but makes like Porsche and Bentley might have a few words to say about that.

Either way, this is a breakthrough moment for the Raging Bull. While the LM002 was arguably the brand’s first “real” SUV, you can’t really compare it to the hyperspeed Urus. While the old Ramboghini got square styling and somewhat plodding performance, the Urus looks and acts like a Lambo should. It’s also got the first-ever turbocharged engine in a Lambo. All told, Lamborghini claims this thing has a “dual personality” and is “multi-dimensional” in what it can do. But the question is this – where does it land amongst the bevy of fast luxury SUVs already on the market?

The 2019 Lamborghini Urus Makes Its Glorious Debut

There were a few snags during the debut, but the Urus persevered anyway!

Tasked with the demanding position of being the first SUV in 25 years to wear a Lamborghini badge, the Lamborghini Urus has finally made its debut. It rides on the same MLB platform that underpins the Bentley Bentayga, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne, but carries a face and an attitude all its own. The body style is as aggressive, if not more so than the concept that came before it while its mean-as-hell attitude comes via a turbocharged, 4.0-liter, V-8 that’s good for a potent but modest 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. And, when I say “mean as hell,” I’m not kidding.
