The sleek Velar is about to go wild with 500+ horsepower

Land Rover’s most recent product, the Range Rover Velar was launched for the 2018 model year to fill the slot between the popular Evoque and Sport models. Larger and more spacious than the Evoque, but sleeker and sportier than the boxy Sport, the Velar is on its way to becoming one of Land Rover’s best-selling offering. The company is well aware of that and wants to spice things up by injecting more performance into the small SUV. And it will do so using the supercharged V-8 engine, and SVR badge, and its Special Vehicles Operation division.

Spotted testing near the Nurburgring, the Velar SVR looks like a standard model for the time being. But as our paparazzi point out, Land Rover can hide the new bumper and rear diffuser under camouflage, but cannot hide the loud exhaust note coming from the 5.0-liter V-8 engine. So despite the fact that the British firm has yet to confirm an SVR version of the Velar, it’s more than obvious that the new family will gain another member pretty soon. Expect this model to break cover in 2018, but until then keep reading to find out what we already know about it.

Updated 07/12/2017: Based on the recent spy shots and details, we created a rendering for the upcoming Velar SVR. Let us know in the comments section below what do you think about it!

Up front, Land Rover will redesign the bumper, adding larger intakes on each side and a revised lower section with a large splitter.

The heavy camouflage prevents us from getting a good glimpse of the vehicle’s extra features, but it’s safe to assume that exterior updates for the Velar will be similar to other SVR models. Up front, Land Rover will redesign the bumper, adding larger intakes on each side and a revised lower section with a large splitter. The headlamps will carry over unchanged, but the grille should receive a new mesh. Wide fenders are also on the table, so this Velar will have a more aggressive stance, especially when seen in the rearview mirror.

Around back, expect to see a larger spoiler atop the tailgate, as well as a redesigned bumper with new exhaust pipes and diffuser.

The crossover shouldn’t be too different from the side, with most panels likely to remain the same. Sure, the wider wheelarches will have a certain visual impact, but not to the extent that it changes the way the car looks. Highlights should include sportier side skirts, unique wheels, and a lower ride height. Around back, expect to see a larger spoiler atop the tailgate, as well as a redesigned bumper with new exhaust pipes and diffuser. Both should give the Velar a sportier look. The package will be rounded off by special "SVR" badges and maybe even a couple of bespoke exterior colors.

All told, the Velar SVR will be decidedly more aggressive than the standard model, but at the same time it will be quite subtle and elegant on the road.

All the SVR-specific upgrades mentioned above are visible in our new rendering. The updates are inspired from those seen on other SVR products, including the blue paint, the blacked-out chrome elements, the wider fenders, and the black roof. Of course, the sporty, lightweight wheels hide blue-painted brake calipers.

Interior from Range Rover Sport SVR shown here.

Much like the Range Rover Sport SVR, the Velar SVR will bring a number of exclusive features in addition to the crossover's already rich and well-appointed interior.

Much like the Range Rover Sport SVR, the Velar SVR will bring a number of exclusive features in addition to the crossover’s already rich and well-appointed interior. The front seats will be traded for sportier units with heavier side bolstering, but comfort and legroom will remain generous. They should also sport quilted centers and contrast piping. In the back, passengers will find performance-oriented seats that can be reclined for increased comfort.

Other novelties should include aluminum trim as standard or carbon-fiber as an option in the door panels, center console, dashboard, and steering wheel (bezel). Upholstery options should include a range of at least four colors, ranging from plain black to lighter, contrasting themes.

Space won't be an issue in the SVR model, which will most likely offer the same 34.4 cubic feet of luggage room behind the second-row seats.

In addition to all of the above, customers will find all the equipment that makes the Velar an attractive option in this segment, such as the 10-inch digital instrument cluster, touch-sensitive controls, a 10-inch screen for the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, and touch controls for the HVAC system. The infotainment display supports multi-gesture controls like pinching and swiping, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and smartphone connectivity.

Drivetrain

There's very little doubt that the mill in question will be the 5.0-liter found in the F-Type SVR and Range Rover Sport SVR.

While the regular Velar comes with a range of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines and a supercharged V-6 in the range-topping trim, the SVR version will most likely use a supercharged V-8. There’s very little doubt that the mill in question will be the 5.0-liter found in the F-Type SVR and Range Rover Sport SVR, but it remains to be seen on which output Land Rover will settle on.

It would be pretty cool to have the higher rating, or even the insane 592-horsepower estimate of the upcoming XE SV Project 8, but 542 horsepower is nothing to sneeze at.

For reference, the SUV cranks out 542 horsepower, while the coupe comes with 567 on tap. Granted, it would be pretty cool to have the higher rating, or even the insane 592-horsepower estimate of the XE SV Project 8, but 542 horsepower is nothing to sneeze at. Should it have more than that, the Velar SVR will become the most powerful Land Rover ever built.

The engine should be backed by a revised eight-speed automatic gearbox with closely stacked ratios and reduced shift times. The fully independent suspension will probably use wide-spaced double wishbones up front and an advanced multi-link layout on the rear, as well as four-corner air suspension with a modified piston profile for sportier handling.

Prices

Pricing information is not yet available, but given that the Range Rover Sport SVR costs twice as much as the standard model in the U.S., the Velar SVR could have a similar premium and retail from around $100,000.

Sharing the same underpinnings, the F-Pace SVR will be the Velar SVR’s main competitor in this niche. And I say "will" because the F-Pace SVR is also under development, with only prototypes and rumors available as of this writing. Still, the design isn’t much of a mystery, as it will essentially arrive as a slightly beefed-up F-pace. Under the hood, it should have the same supercharged, 5.0-liter V-8 as the Velar SVR, but the output may vary. What will set the two apart? For starters, the Jaguar design might be more appealing to those looking for a less casual SUV. Second, the Jag is likely to be a bit more affordable, as in cost around $90,000 before options.

Until BMW creates an M version of the X3 or Mercedes-Benz comes up with a regular variant of the AMG GLC63 S Coupe, the Porsche Macan Turbo is pretty much the only option available. The most powerful iteration of the small crossover, the Macan Turbo gets its juice from a beefed-up, twin-turbo, 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. That might not sound like a lot compared to almost 550 horses, but when equipped with the Performance Package, the Macan Turbo comes with 434 horsepower and 443 pound-feet on tap. It’s far from impressive, but Porsche excellent dynamics make up for the lack of oomph. The Performance Package slashes the 0-to-60 mph sprint to only 4.2 seconds and all-wheel-drive is standard. What’s more, it retails from $87,700, which makes it significantly more affordable than what the Velar SVR is expected to cost.

Conclusion

With two SVR models already in dealerships, a couple of special-edition models sold out, and at least three more underway, Jaguar Land Rover seems to be on a roll in the performance market. And this is exactly what the brand needed in this ever demanding environment in which high-performance vehicles are mandatory in order to survive. Is the Velar SVR a good idea? It definitely is! Sure, Land Rover has plenty of other models to give the performance treatment too, but the Velar is the best option for the time being. It’s not too large, not as small as the Evoque, it’s just right for people who what to compromise between utility and performance.

  • Leave it
    • * Jaguar F-Pace SVR also underway
    • * Macan Turbo is a good option
