Land Rover Showcases world-first dual-modem infotainment system at CES
Unveiled in September 2019, the new-generation Land Rover Defender was showcased at a couple of auto shows last year. Come 2020 and Land Rover is showing off the vehicle’s advanced infotainment system at the Consumer Electronics Show. Why is this important? Well, Land Rover claims that the Defender features the world’s first dual-modem, dual eSIM technology, which enhances connectivity and helps the infotainment system work quicker even when operating system updates.

I am in love with the new Land Rover Defender. But at first, I was not. I was disappointed with its move towards an unibody chassis, and I have resented all the "soft-touches" Land Rover prepped for it. But I have changed my mind.
True, it is a mommy automobile, and a kids-to-school mover, but it is the best mommy automobile and kids transportation device I have ever seen. It’s tough, robust, well-engineered, rugged, and seriously capable. Plus, Land Rover offers it with 170 accessories, like roof racks, tow hitches, steel wheels, a rinse system, an armrest cooler, and a front bench-style seat. Find me another car that offers all of that. There’s no way you can. But!
There is a big "but" here. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is seriously expensive. It starts at $50,925 (plus destination charges) in the U.S. That’s huge. That is the price of the base BMW X4 xDrive30i. Take a deep dive in the configurator and you can spec it out at more than 100 grand. That is absurd.
In 2012, the Land Rover Defender started at $22,000 in Australia. Then again, the only thing that’s left from the old Defender on the new one is the name. Nothing else. This is a wholly new car. I only hope that Land Rover invested heavily in quality control. If it manages to ace reliability and dependability surveys with the new Defender, I’d say that the price may even be justified.

Part of the beauty of owning a vehicle like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford F-150 Raptor, Toyota 4Runner, or even the new Land Rover Defender is the ability to play off-road. By that, we mean hitting rough terrain, climbing over obstacles, and going places cars like the Porsche 911 or Aston Martin DBS Superleggera can’t go. Doing this, however, requires a certain amount of driver skill – your everyday driver doesn’t just know how to approach and climb over rocky terrain or climb excessive steep grades. But, that’s part of the fun of off-roading; you learn how to approach different obstacles and enjoy the challenge. Now, however, it looks like a company known for its off-roading prowess, Land Rover, has lost touch with that entire concept as it works to developer remote control technology for the 2020 Defender.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a brand-new SUV that revives a nameplate that the British firm discontinued in 2016. But not only it marks the Defender’s return after three years, it also marks the nameplate’s return to the U.S. market after 22 years. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is finally here after what seemed like a lifetime of waiting. Land Rover announced that it was working on an all-new Defender way back in 2011, when it revealed the DC100 concept. At the time, the design study made many traditional fans of the Defender exclaim that it didn’t preview a vehicle they’d be interested in buying, so Land Rover actually made a second concept in 2016, called LR1, but it didn’t show it to the public - it was an evolution of the DC100 and it actually was the basis for the recently unveiled production Defender.

Land Rover has been very secretive about its ground-up new 2020 Defender (in the works for over five years now) that will probably make its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Now, for the first time, we’ve found a photo of the 2020 Defender’s interior, and we’re pretty sure Land Rover is not too keen on it having been shared.
2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
Launched in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, prompting other premium brands to either join the niche or improve upon existing models. Come 2018, and Land Rover has introduced the second-generation crossover, placing it again high above the competition.
Redesigned on a brand-new platform, the second-gen Evoque ditched its old Ford-sourced engines and adopted JLR’s new four-cylinder diesels. Compact luxury crossovers are all the rage these days, and Land Rover is taking advantage with a second generation for the Range Rover Evoque. The updated premium high-rider just dropped onto U.S. shores at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, and it’s looking to mate green tech and top-shelf amenities with rough-stuff capability.
Buyers cross shopping between the new Range Rover Evoque and BMW X2 are looking at two different answers to the same question: What is a rakish-looking, almost coupe-like crossover that is striking to behold, fun to drive and posh to sit in? They’re about the same size, even though the Evoque looks bigger because it is more squared off, but they actually provide a very different experience for driver and occupants.
Firstly, the X2 feels like a very well sorted hatchback to drive, and you can throw it into corners with a fair bit of confidence. On the other hand, it is pretty much useless off-road going over anything more severe than a potholed country road. The Range Rover Evoque is decent to drive on tarmac, but it’s only average in this respect, however, it wipes the floor with the X2 when it comes to any kind of tougher off-roading.
They look and feel different and also address different buyers with different needs, even though they will be cross shopped and compared against one another. The fact of the matter is, they’re so different, it’s quite possible that somebody who really likes one, will absolutely hate the other. It probably all boils down to where and how you want to use it, although realistically very few buyers will actually take advantage of the Evoque’s off-road qualities, and just potter around the city in it, an application where the X2 is probably better.

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque Has the Coolest Rear View Mirror Ever
The Range Rover Evoque isn’t exactly a spring chicken and 2019 marks the introduction of the second-generation of Land Rovers entry-level people mover. Entry level is a weak word when it comes to the Evoque however and, despite the fact that this model looks a lot like the old at a glance, there’s a lot of new tech here. The Evoque just became Land Rovers first mild hybrid vehicle and a plug-in model is even on the way. New screens adorn the updated dashboard inside but what really stuck out to me was the new hybrid rear view mirror.
Land Rover Spent Almost £1 Billion To Give the Evoque a Mild Facelift and New Technology
Land Rover chose Thanksgiving day to debut the new Range Rover Evoque and here we are looking at a model that, at a glance, received a very mild, even somewhat Audi-like, facelift. Below this mildly changed skin, however, Land Rover claims it has spent nearly £1 Billion to refine the architecture underneath with the goal of making it suitable for electrification.
The interior is also littered with plenty of high-end tech, including two high-definition touchscreen displays, refined infotainment software, and artificial intelligence. Powertrain options include a range of diesel and gasoline engines. The entry-level model (the D150 trim) is the only model available with a six-speed manual and is the only model available without Land Rover’s mild hybrid technology. Towing capacity ranges anywhere between 3,527 and 4,409 pounds depending on trim and equipment level.
2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast”
The name “Defender” carries some serious weight in the world of off-roading. With a long history of military service and simply unflappable talent off-road, this iconic model from Land Rover serves as the bones for myriad capability-focused vehicles. Florida-based auto shop East Coast Defenders knows this well, making its name building custom versions of the British model for enhanced style, greater interior comfort, and even greater agility while traversing the great outdoors. Now, ECD is invading the sands of Vegas with its latest custom build, dropping the sheets at the 2017 SEMA show. The project was a collaboration with Warn Industries, a manufacturer that specializes in vehicle recovery equipment, and is based on a Defender 110 model from 1985. Created by hand and equipped with a litany of custom parts, ECD appropriately calls this build “Project Beast.”
Framed as an “elite off-road SUV,” Project Beast was actually completed in 2016, built in ECD’s “Rover Dome” in Kissimmee, Florida. All told, it’s got the right stuff for attracting attention at SEMA. Read on for more.

Land Rover Teases New Velar SUV; Fresh Tech Incoming?
Land Rover just dropped an above-and-behind teaser image of its new Velar SUV, saying it will fill the gap between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport. The Velar supposedly uses the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace, and is expected to take on rivals like the BMW X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe, and Porsche Macan, with four-cylinder, six-cylinder, and possibly even hybrid powerplants offered under the hood.
Land Rover has yet to divulge many details, but did say the Velar will offer “elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and all-new consumer technologies,” so we’re guessing a coupe-like, streamlined, and somewhat minimalist exterior, a good dose of interior opulence, and a suite of semi-autonomous driving tech.
Studying the provided press pic, we can also see a large moonroof and a decently sized touchscreen in the dash. Land Rover added that it used “sustainable materials” in the vehicle’s construction.
“We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover,” says Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer, in the attached press release. “It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”
While likely not much more than PR bluster, we’re excited to see if the Velar can truly bring something new and exciting to the segment. The name, after all, harkens back to the first Range Rover prototype from 1969, so maybe there’s something up Land Rover’s sleeve.
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out the truth. The Range Rover Velar is slated to see a full reveal on March 1st, with an in-the-metal debut in the U.S. at this year’s New York International Auto Show in April.
