Familiar style meets improved substance

Back in 2012, the Range Rover Evoque was a radical departure. This Land Rover sub-brand made a name for itself with powerful, comfortable SUVs, with big, boxy, classic styling. The “Baby Range Rover” Evoque was a subcompact crossover with a sleek silhouette and tiny windows. It looked like a bold concept car that instead hit the streets. The bet paid off — the Evoque not only brought new customers into the Range Rover fold, but it successfully previewed the brand’s direction. This once-radical face now adorns the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, and even the flagship original Range Rover.

What the 2012 Evoque didn’t have was perfect luxury-grade substance. It was a head-turning little luxury SUV upholstered in expensive leather, but built from old Ford parts. Buyers who fell in love with the looks had to live with mediocre ride, handling, and acceleration, to say nothing of its cramped cabin and tight outward visibility. And while many buyers happily did so, Land Rover redesigned the Evoque this year to improve its substance without compromising its style.

We recently spent a week in the redesigned 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (apologies for the long name) to evaluate how well the company did. We found it to be improved but still imperfect: loyal owners should have nothing but praise for the changes, and there are enough improvements to bring in some new buyers to the fold. But purely on substance, we’d be hard-pressed to call the Evoque a leader in the cutthroat subcompact luxury SUV segment, particularly at above-average prices that start above $42,650. We decided to drive the new 2020 Range Rover Sport HST. The HST has black wheels and a black roof and looks to be the sporty alternative to your regular Range Rover. The exterior is perfectly proportioned and looks very aggressive and luxurious at the same time. It still retains the boxy styling with large windows which is great because that translates into more room inside and better visibility.

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition

Land Rover’s way of tempting you out of buying a Macan

Land Rover’s compact luxury crossover SUV, the Range Rover Velar, is finally getting a seriously fast version in the form of the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. It has 473 horsepower, as much as the bigger Range Rover Sport SVR, and 502 pound-feet of torque, enough for a 0 to 60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. With a top speed of 170 mph, it’s also one of the fastest Land Rover products you can buy today and it doesn’t fail to let you know all about how grunty it is.

You’re now looking at the top-of-the-range Velar. The most expensive version money can buy and the one that will get you to your destination the fastest. Its 5.0-liter V-8 isn’t new either. What’s interesting here is Land Rover’s decision to use the SVAutobiography name for the hottest Velar instead of the SVR name that adorns the angriest Range Rover Sport and the Jaguar F-Pace.

The Land Rover Range Rover is also available in SVAutobiography trim and, like the Velar, it’s more subtle than the SVO-developed SVR models. That is if you can call turbine-like 22-inch wheels and quad exhausts a note of subtlety. What’s certain is that the $111,402 price tag is no way shape or form subtle being just $3,000 shy off the price of a Range Rover Sport SVR.

Land Rover is already working on a next-generation Discovery Sport, but with the model still a few years away from arriving, a facelifted version of the current Discovery Sport is making test rounds. The prototype is wrapped in heavy camouflage, but the overall shape of the SUV suggests that there could be a lot of changes made to the updated Discovery Sport ahead of the next-generation model’s arrival in a few years.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport Landmark Edition

Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, the Land Rover Discovery Sport needs only a few years to become the fastest-selling Land Rover of all time. The crossover’s popularity prompted Land Rover to create a range of special-edition models, the latest of which is called the Landmark Edition and it’s available for the 2018 model year.

Another reason why Land Rover chose the Discovery Sport to be the designated nameplate for special-edition model is because it was also the first model to be built on the company’s 70th birthday on 30 April. The vehicle will thus be used to support a number of projects in 2018, starting with a community resilience project in Scotland. The Landmark Edition adds unique color and trim combinations to the popular crossover, pairing them with a powerful version of the 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel engine. Updates for Range Rover’s most luxurious model

The Land Rover Range Rover’s ultimate trim level, the SVAutobiography, is getting a healthy update for 2018. Of course, many of these same updates are found on the standard 2018 Range Rover, too, having undergone a welcomed refresh. The 2018 SVAutobiography is available on the long-wheelbase Range Rover. It comes with ultra-premium levels of luxury fittings and first-class accommodations for rear passengers. Airline-style reclining seats with massaging, folding aluminum tray tables, power-operated doors, twin 10.2-inch entertainment monitors, and a refrigerated compartment are just some of the highlights.

As part of the Range Rover’s 2018 update, the dashboard now features the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch touchscreens in the center stack and another 10-inch screen for the fully digital gauge cluster. Other tech features include 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for eight devices, plenty of USB and 12-volt ports, a household power plug. Land Rover’s Connect Pro brings smartphone connection and remote controlling of the vehicle’s systems. The app allows for operating door locks, setting climate control temperatures, and remotely starting the engine. And for those times when having keys for a phone on your person isn’t feasible, the available Activity Key wristband doubles as the key fob.

Preparing the next generation

Land Rover is apparently working on the next generation of Discovery Sport. It comes a bit early since the current model has only been out since 2015 and the next generation isn’t expected until 2020 at the earliest. Then again, automakers need plenty of lead time in building a new model. Spy shots were gathered of a test mule driving along European streets and tale-tell signs of change are seen hidden within the bodywork.

Nothing official is known about the next-generation Discovery Sport at this point, though Land Rover will likely strive for better fuel economy with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, expanded diesel options, improved driving characteristics, and a more luxurious interior – all while still being the smallest and least-expensive vehicle in Land Rover’s fleet.

A plug-in hybrid for the trails

Only a few days after Land Rover announced its heavily updated 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e, the British automaker is adding that same plug-in hybrid powertrain to its revised 2019 Range Rover. The gasoline-electric system provides a very impressive all-electric range of 31 miles thanks to a 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery and an 85-kW electric motor. Once depleted, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder kicks on to recharge the battery and power the Range Rover through the familiar ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Thankfully, the P400e is no slouch. It boasts a combined output of 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque good enough for a 0-to-60 mph run of 6.4 seconds and to a top speed of 137 mph. In other words, the Range Rover doesn’t lose any of its class-leading capabilities due to its new hybrid powertrain.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about hybrids from Range Rover. In fact, not only does the 2019 Range Rover P400e follow the Range Rover Sport P400e, it follows Jaguar Land Rover’s official promise to offer a hybrid powertrain in every one of its models by 2020. We had also seen camouflaged Range Rover test mules trudging through the snow with a slightly reshaped front end. Now, the P400e is only one member of the Range Rover lineup. There’s the 3.0-liter gasoline V-6 and the 5.0-liter V-8 – both of which are supercharged. Then there’s the newer 3.0-liter Td6 V-6 turbodiesel. All Range Rovers are undergoing a mid-cycle refresh for the 2018 model year. The changes include the new front fascia and some extensive technology improvements within the dash. Those wanting the P400e powertrain will have to wait until the 2019 model year, however. Still, it should be well worth the wait.

A new hybrid powertrain accompanies the updated 2018 Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is getting a facelift and thorough update for the 2019 model year, along with an all-new gasoline-electric hybrid variant called the P400e. In addition to the new exterior and swanky updated,

technology

laden interior, the 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e will offer 31 miles of all-electric driving from its 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder. But this isn’t some slowpoke Prius. Rather, the P400e packs 404 combined horsepower and 472 pound-feet of combined torque to shoot this all-aluminum SUV to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 137 mph while also being able to squeeze out 101 MPGe on the European scale when driving conservatively.

The 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s recent promise to have an electrified variant of each of its vehicles by 2020. The P400e joins the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace crossover as the second member of JLR’s new-age lineup. Obviously, we can expect many more JLR vehicles coming with similar hybrid powertrains in the near future, especially since 2020 is only two model years away. While we have no insider information on the subject, it would be a safe bet JLR will use hybrid systems very similar to the P400e’s in the majority of its vehicles. The range will include everything from the sporty Jaguar F-Type to the luxury-minded Range Rover. Until then, let’s take a look at the 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e, its hybrid drivetrain, and its updated aesthetics and technology.
