2020 Land Rover Defender Yachting Edition by Carlex Design

2020 Land Rover Defender Yachting Edition by Carlex Design

This nautical-themed off-roader by the Polish aftermarket company looks exquisite

Carlex is known for its out-of-the-box themes and designs. A couple of months back, the aftermarket company came up with a Yachting Edition of the Mercedes-AMG G63, which was designed for a customer in Dubai. It looks like the design pleased the enthusiasts as well as the folks at Carlex because it has now come up with another Yachting Edition, but this time it is based on the Land Rover Defender. In all honesty, it looks as sweet as the G 63 itself and comes with a lot of new stuff inside, on the outside, and none under the hood.

2020 Ineos Grenadier

An up and coming British automaker’s attempt at an old-school off-road SUV inspired by the old Defender

When folks like us are obsessed with a car, we draw it on papers, doodle about it, and all of that. But, if you have billions of pounds in your bank account, you just build a fully-functional vehicle from scratch. This is how the Ineos Grenadier came to life.

Ineos is a British petrochemicals group founded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe which now has an automotive division in its portfolio. Such was his love for the classic Defender that he tried to purchase the rights from Land Rover. When denied, he went on to build an SUV from the ground up that takes heavy inspiration from the old Defender. Although it looks the part, is the Ineos Grenadier as tough as the classic Land Rover?

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Driven

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Driven

Familiar style meets improved substance

Back in 2012, the Range Rover Evoque was a radical departure. This Land Rover sub-brand made a name for itself with powerful, comfortable SUVs, with big, boxy, classic styling. The “Baby Range Rover” Evoque was a subcompact crossover with a sleek silhouette and tiny windows. It looked like a bold concept car that instead hit the streets. The bet paid off — the Evoque not only brought new customers into the Range Rover fold, but it successfully previewed the brand’s direction. This once-radical face now adorns the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, and even the flagship original Range Rover.

What the 2012 Evoque didn’t have was perfect luxury-grade substance. It was a head-turning little luxury SUV upholstered in expensive leather, but built from old Ford parts. Buyers who fell in love with the looks had to live with mediocre ride, handling, and acceleration, to say nothing of its cramped cabin and tight outward visibility. And while many buyers happily did so, Land Rover redesigned the Evoque this year to improve its substance without compromising its style.

We recently spent a week in the redesigned 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (apologies for the long name) to evaluate how well the company did. We found it to be improved but still imperfect: loyal owners should have nothing but praise for the changes, and there are enough improvements to bring in some new buyers to the fold. But purely on substance, we’d be hard-pressed to call the Evoque a leader in the cutthroat subcompact luxury SUV segment, particularly at above-average prices that start above $42,650. Let’s discuss why.

2020 Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition SV600 By Manhart Performance

2020 Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition SV600 By Manhart Performance

The tuner has given the SUV some extra boost along with subtle exterior changes

Range Rover is generally regarded as a brand that has churned out tough, brawny vehicles with a tilt towards off-roading. The Velar, however, will change your mind. Don’t get me wrong; the SUV can still take the beaten paths, but it’s the opulence and the luxuriousness that will leave you drooling.

But, even if this wasn’t enough for you, Manhart Performance has something the offer. The German tuner has given the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition a twist that increases the output figure to make almost 600 horses. That should make you happy.

2020 Land Rover Defender 110 "Project Rowdy" by ECD Automotive Design

2020 Land Rover Defender 110 "Project Rowdy" by ECD Automotive Design

How can you go wrong with a Corvette-powered Defender?

Land Rover redefined the way off-roaders are perceived. The automaker brought class and finesse to many off-roaders and launched many monikers that are fondly remembered even today. The Defender is one of them. The badge came to life in the 1980s, before which it was known as the Land Rover Ninety and One Ten. The automaker pulled the plug on it in 2016, but brought it back again last year. In 2018, Land Rover rolled out a special edition of the Defender called the Defender Works V-8.

A lot of aftermarket companies have customized it over the years, but one company called ECD Automotive Design has taken a special liking towards it. The company specializes in customizing Land Rover SUVs in unimaginable ways. This time around, it has worked on the old-school Defender 110 which it calls the ‘Project Rowdy’. Project Rowdy is tough on the outside, plush on the inside, and powerful under the hood. The highlight of this project is the Corvette engine that sits under the hood! What more would you like from a customized SUV?

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HST - Driven

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HST - Driven

An outsider’s impression of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport HST

SUVs are the latest trend but that is nothing new to Range Rover. The first Range Rover was introduced in 1970 and the brand has been making premium SUVs for decades so the idea of a luxury SUV is nothing new. Of course, luxury in 1970 and luxury in 2020 are totally different. For 2020, Range Rover sells tons of different variations starting as llow as $37,800 all the way north of $200,000.

We decided to drive the new 2020 Range Rover Sport HST. The HST has black wheels and a black roof and looks to be the sporty alternative to your regular Range Rover. The exterior is perfectly proportioned and looks very aggressive and luxurious at the same time. It still retains the boxy styling with large windows which is great because that translates into more room inside and better visibility.

The iconic SUV returns to the United States after 22 years!

The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a brand-new SUV that revives a nameplate that the British firm discontinued in 2016. But not only it marks the Defender’s return after three years, it also marks the nameplate’s return to the U.S. market after 22 years. The 2020 Defender is a familiar sight thanks to its boxy design, but that’s the only feature that reminds of its predecessor. Underneath, the 2020 Defender sports a modern, all-aluminum monocoque architecture and, for the first time, it comes with a mild hybrid drivetrain.

The 2020 Defender also comes into dealerships with a complete engine lineup that includes both gasoline and diesel powerplants. However, the oil burners aren’t available in the United States. The 2020 Defender remains as versatile as its predecessor with various interior layouts available. You can order it as a classic five seater, but you can also opt for a front jump seat and turn it into a six seater. Two addition third-row seats are also available, so the Defender can also become a seven- or eight-seat SUV. What else is new and how does it compare with the iconic Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class? Let’s find out in the detailed review below.

The automaker has certainly upped the ante with this wholesome package

Despite offering one of the most premium cabins in its SUVs, Land Rover is still not recalled as a luxurious brand. It is, however, synonymous with reliable, tough off-roaders. But, if you have spent some time with any of the latest models, you will realize that the brand has come a long way in terms of spoiling and pampering the customer. It can give the big three Germans a tough fight in this aspect. And the Land Rover Range Rover Sport further strengthens this faith. Just like any other model in its lineup, the Range Rover Sport will definitely age gracefully and blend well with the upcoming new crop of EVs that look like they belong to another planet. But is the Range Rover Sport all about the aesthetics and luxuriousness? We laid our hands on it and our answer is...of course not!

All trimmed up to take on the SuperSUV competition

When you put words like luxury, performance, and SUV in the same sentence, the first names that probably come to mind are BMW, Audi, Bentley, or maybe even Lamborghini. But, what about Land Rover? It seems to be a brand that resides in the shadowy depths of our brains instead of up front where it really belongs. This never became more evident until we managed to get our hands on a Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography. From the second we came into contact with the SVA, the exterior design started tickling our interest, and we only became more fascinated with it once we sat down inside. In short, we couldn’t wait to drive it and experience the whole package. How does it handle? Is it comfortable for longer drives? Is that 557-horsepower V-8 too much for a vehicle like this or not enough, and how does its performance stack up against the competition? We decided to find out for ourselves, and this is our experience with the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover SVAutobiography.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sentinel

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sentinel

An armoured Range Rover built in-house to keep you in one piece in the worst of days

The Sentinel is the Land Rover Range Rover to get if you often feel like someone may be cooking a bullet with your name on it. And, now is the time to get it because Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations unveiled an improved version that’s powered by the venerable 375-horsepower, 5.0-liter engine that is tasked with keeping an SUV that can survive the blast of an IED on the move. The Land Rover Range Rover is one of the most imposing European full-size SUV and, in long-wheelbase specification, it measures 204.7 inches in length, more than a standard Cadillac Escalade. But, there’s a way to obtain a Range Rover that gleams even more with officialdom than usual if you get one that’s armored. There are many companies more than willing to add thick bulletproof glass and reinforced sheet metal on your luxurious mode of transport, but the Sentinel is an official product offered by Land Rover itself, not some third-party outfit. That alone is supposed to make it the more reassuring option.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Mild redesign on the outside, new tech on the inside

Launched in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, prompting other premium brands to either join the niche or improve upon existing models. Come 2018, and Land Rover has introduced the second-generation crossover, placing it again high above the competition.

Redesigned on a brand-new platform, the second-gen Evoque ditched its old Ford-sourced engines and adopted JLR’s new four-cylinder diesels. More importantly, almost all drivetrains are now 48-volt mild hybrids, with a plug-in hybrid set to join the lineup in 2019. Land Rover took a rather evolutionary approach to the Evoque’s design inside the out, so it remains familiar. The redesign is more of the facelift variety styling-wise, but everything is new under the shell.

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition

Land Rover’s way of tempting you out of buying a Macan

Land Rover’s compact luxury crossover SUV, the Range Rover Velar, is finally getting a seriously fast version in the form of the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. It has 473 horsepower, as much as the bigger Range Rover Sport SVR, and 502 pound-feet of torque, enough for a 0 to 60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. With a top speed of 170 mph, it’s also one of the fastest Land Rover products you can buy today and it doesn’t fail to let you know all about how grunty it is.

You’re now looking at the top-of-the-range Velar. The most expensive version money can buy and the one that will get you to your destination the fastest. Its 5.0-liter V-8 isn’t new either. What’s interesting here is Land Rover’s decision to use the SVAutobiography name for the hottest Velar instead of the SVR name that adorns the angriest Range Rover Sport and the Jaguar F-Pace.

The Land Rover Range Rover is also available in SVAutobiography trim and, like the Velar, it’s more subtle than the SVO-developed SVR models. That is if you can call turbine-like 22-inch wheels and quad exhausts a note of subtlety. What’s certain is that the $111,402 price tag is no way shape or form subtle being just $3,000 shy off the price of a Range Rover Sport SVR.

Diesel power only

Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, the Land Rover Discovery Sport needs only a few years to become the fastest-selling Land Rover of all time. The crossover’s popularity prompted Land Rover to create a range of special-edition models, the latest of which is called the Landmark Edition and it’s available for the 2018 model year.

Another reason why Land Rover chose the Discovery Sport to be the designated nameplate for special-edition model is because it was also the first model to be built on the company’s 70th birthday on 30 April. The vehicle will thus be used to support a number of projects in 2018, starting with a community resilience project in Scotland. The Landmark Edition adds unique color and trim combinations to the popular crossover, pairing them with a powerful version of the 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel engine. Let’s find out more about it below.

Updates for Range Rover’s most luxurious model

The Land Rover Range Rover’s ultimate trim level, the SVAutobiography, is getting a healthy update for 2018. Of course, many of these same updates are found on the standard 2018 Range Rover, too, having undergone a welcomed refresh. The 2018 SVAutobiography is available on the long-wheelbase Range Rover. It comes with ultra-premium levels of luxury fittings and first-class accommodations for rear passengers. Airline-style reclining seats with massaging, folding aluminum tray tables, power-operated doors, twin 10.2-inch entertainment monitors, and a refrigerated compartment are just some of the highlights.

As part of the Range Rover’s 2018 update, the dashboard now features the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch touchscreens in the center stack and another 10-inch screen for the fully digital gauge cluster. Other tech features include 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for eight devices, plenty of USB and 12-volt ports, a household power plug. Land Rover’s Connect Pro brings smartphone connection and remote controlling of the vehicle’s systems. The app allows for operating door locks, setting climate control temperatures, and remotely starting the engine. And for those times when having keys for a phone on your person isn’t feasible, the available Activity Key wristband doubles as the key fob.

Of course, that’s just scratching the surface, so let’s dive into what’s new.

2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Preparing the next generation

Land Rover is apparently working on the next generation of Discovery Sport. It comes a bit early since the current model has only been out since 2015 and the next generation isn’t expected until 2020 at the earliest. Then again, automakers need plenty of lead time in building a new model. Spy shots were gathered of a test mule driving along European streets and tale-tell signs of change are seen hidden within the bodywork.

Nothing official is known about the next-generation Discovery Sport at this point, though Land Rover will likely strive for better fuel economy with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, expanded diesel options, improved driving characteristics, and a more luxurious interior – all while still being the smallest and least-expensive vehicle in Land Rover’s fleet.

The name “Defender” carries some serious weight in the world of off-roading. With a long history of military service and simply unflappable talent off-road, this iconic model from Land Rover serves as the bones for myriad capability-focused vehicles. Florida-based auto shop East Coast Defenders knows this well, making its name building custom versions of the British model for enhanced style, greater interior comfort, and even greater agility while traversing the great outdoors. Now, ECD is invading the sands of Vegas with its latest custom build, dropping the sheets at the 2017 SEMA show. The project was a collaboration with Warn Industries, a manufacturer that specializes in vehicle recovery equipment, and is based on a Defender 110 model from 1985. Created by hand and equipped with a litany of custom parts, ECD appropriately calls this build “Project Beast.”

Framed as an “elite off-road SUV,” Project Beast was actually completed in 2016, built in ECD’s “Rover Dome” in Kissimmee, Florida. All told, it’s got the right stuff for attracting attention at SEMA. Read on for more.
