As expected, even Land Rover had to go all hybrid with its luxurious Range Rover offering. For the new model year, the British producers of awesome SUVs revealed the 2019 Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid. It is a car capable of traveling on hybrid power or using electric-only propulsion. Now available in the U.S., the Range Rover Sport P400e Plug-In Hybrid price comes at $78,300 which falls right in between the HSE Td6 and the HSE Dynamic.

Hybrid System

JLR crafted quite a formidable hybrid system for the largest and heaviest Range Rover vehicle. You may be surprised to learn that it is based around a 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine that develops 296 horsepower. I guess it is the same engine found in the entry-level Jaguar F-Type. This makes the Range Rover Sport P400e the only Range Rover Sport with a four-cylinder engine. Don’t stress, though, as it is assisted by a powerful, 141-horsepower electric motor that takes is powered by a 13.1 kWh battery. Combined, this concoction develops 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. More than enough, I’d say. Especially considering that it can propel the Range Rover to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds (that’s a bit quicker compared with the Range Rover P400e).

However, it seems that the more important character trait of the Range Rover Sport P400e is the fact that it can travel up to 31 miles using electric power alone. Of course, taking into account that the 13.1 kWh battery is full. You’d need exactly 2 hours and 45 minutes to charge it using a 220V / 32 Amp charger. Not a lot of time, I guess. This could be useful if your daily commute isn’t much longer than that.

Off-Road Capabilities

Range Rover officials actually noted that the extra torque pouch from the electric engine is instrumental to providing exceptional power response in off-road situations. The hybrid received the same off-road gear as all other Range Rover Sport models. Yet, new for 2019 is the integration of a new wade sensing feature. This technology senses the depth of water at all times and can assess if the Range Rover is moving into deeper or shallower water. It will even notify the driver if the water becomes too deep. I reckon every off-roading enthusiast will find this useful. This tech is available for all other 2019 Range Rover Sport models on the market as well.

You could sense further enhancements with the new driver assists that includes adaptive cruise control with steering assist. All of them have been reprogrammed and improved in some sense.

The rest of the lineup carries over the same as before with a 3.0-liter diesel or a 3.0-liter, V-6 or a 5.0-liter, V-8 that develops between 518 and 575 horsepower.

JLR Future Plans

Announcing a massive investment in development and research, JLR also announced its amazing plan to renew its entire lineup by 2024. The company will, apparently, launch 99 new model variants, four all-new models, and reveal a successor to every car currently available by 2024.

The Evoque is the first one scheduled for a replacement.

New cars will gain modular architecture that supports mild-hybrid diesel and petrol engines, as well as engines with electric turbochargers (48-volt electric systems are a must). Furthermore, JLR is currently creating a system that will allow all their cars to connect to the internet for over-the-air updates.
