That’s why the current-generation RX’s shortcomings have been so surprising. It debuted in 2016 with polarizing styling, limited cargo space, no available third-row seat, cumbersome controls, and missing infotainment features.
At least based on the sales numbers, buyers registered no objections. They either embraced or accepted the RX for what it is, continuing to be drawn to its quiet ride, rich leather, and promise of headache-free reliability. But Lexus has steadily improved the vehicle since that 2016 debut. It added an extended-length three-row model for the 2018 model year, known as the RX L. Now, the 2020 RX features an upgraded infotainment system and tweaks to the styling and suspension.

2020 Lexus IS F Sport Blackline Edition
Eight months after dropping the 2019 Lexus IS F 300 Sport Black Line Edition, Toyota’s premium brand is dipping its toes back in that pool with the arrival of the 2020 Lexus IS F Sport Black Line Edition.
In case you’re confused, Lexus is bringing two different Black Line Edition models to the market in the same calendar year. You can’t fault Lexus for being enterprising, especially if the 2019 IS F 300 Sport Black Line Edition sold as well as we think it did. This time, the IS F Sport receives the Black Line Edition treatment, and in keeping with tradition, this new SE benefits from a host of exterior and interior upgrades to go along with its limited availability. Only 900 units of the 2020 Lexus IS F 300 Sport Black Line Edition will be available in the U.S. market at a starting price of $46,225.
2020 Lexus NX300 Black Line Special Edition
The Lexus NX is one of the most aggressively designed crossovers in its segment. It’s also going on its sixth year in production. At some point, the NX’s dynamic design will wear off, and Lexus will need to do something fresh to inject some excitement back to the NX nameplate. Give credit to Lexus, then, because that’s exactly what it’s doing.
For the second time this year, Toyota’s premium car brand will roll out a Black Line Edition for the NX crossover. The new Black Line Edition is based on the NX300 trim of the popular crossover. It mostly features aesthetic and visual upgrades to the exterior and interior, including one specific highlight that brings all these details together in one impressive special edition design package. Only 2,000 units of the 2020 NX300 Black Line Edition will be built. Each model will carry a starting price of $45,735. That price tag could go up to $47,135 if you eschew the front-wheel drive version in favor of the all-wheel drive model.

Lexus is taking the phrase “cutting-edge technology” to a new level with the introduction of the Bladescan adaptive LED headlights on the 2020 Lexus RX 450h. Prospective buyers of the new SUV in Europe will be the first ones to try out the new lighting technology, which Lexus says is a big improvement from its existing adaptive headlamps. The Bladescan adaptive LED headlights are the latest in a series of lighting innovations that Lexus has pioneered in the auto industry. Remember, the Japanese automaker was the first brand to use LED headlights when it introduced the technology in the 2007 LS 600h. Lexus was also the first to market adaptive high-beam headlights with the 2012 Lexus LS. The Bladescan adaptive LED headlights are expected to deliver significant improvements in night-time visibility while reducing driver stress along the way. Our friends in Europe will be able to experience that first-hand when the 2020 Lexus RX 450h arrives later this year. Unfortunately, the technology will not be offered in U.S.-spec versions of the RX SUV.

Lexus is joining the minivan segment with the upcoming release of the LM minivan. Yes, you read that right. Lexus, the same company that gave us the LFA supercar, is dipping its toes in the minivan market, proving that automakers will do just about anything to make money these days. The automaker has yet to unveil the LM minivan — that’s happening at the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2019 that kicks off on April 16 in Shanghai, China — but a teaser image of the model has provided clear hints that the model will be largely based on the Toyota Alphard. Yes; the same luxury van that Toyota has been selling in various Asian markets for the better part of 17 years. Production plans for the Lexus LM suggest that we’ll see the minivan hit the road sometime in 2020, though it’s unlikely that we’ll get to see the LM in the U.S.

Lexus’ new range of vehicles is on a new high altogether. The premium Japanese automaker is building cars that are fresh, exciting, and actually fun to drive. The latest present from its box of surprises is the 2019 Lexus ES350 F Sport. This car is breaking all the shackles for Lexus as a whole. The well-equipped sedan is engaging to drive, and the company’s move to work outside of its comfort zone has done wonders to this beauty. It feels nice to see some automakers still working on building magnificent machines in a segment that is dying a slow death.
The 2021 Lexus IS Could Inherit the 2020 Toyota Supra’s BMW-Sourced Inline-Six
Is it possible that Toyota’s existing partnership with BMW could extend into a Lexus? That’s what a report from Japan’s Best Car magazine is saying. According to the report, the next-generation Lexus IS sports sedan will be powered by the same 335-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged, straight-six that you can find under the hood of a recently released Toyota sports car that’s been dominating the news lately. If the reports are true, the next-generation IS could share the same engine with the Toyota Supra and, by extension, the BMW Z4. Whether using that engine is enough to elevate the IS’ standing in the premium compact luxury market remains to be seen. It would definitely be interesting to see it compete against BMW and the almighty 3 Series with an engine that comes from, well, BMW.
Lexus needs to infuse its image with some extra sportiness because even though it does make good, credible sporty cars, it is still perceived as a brand addressed toward SUV loving soccer moms and your elderly aunt who decides to spend most of her life savings on a new luxury car to treat herself. One such vehicle could be a spiced up version of the UX crossover, the newest and smallest crossover to join the Lexus range.
If Lexus made a UX F, it would be the closest thing it could ever make to a hot hatch. The UX is already a low-to-the-ground vehicle with excellent cornering capability, so making it lower, harder, and more powerful in order to make it faster sounds like a good plan. Plus, it could also benefit from a sporty exterior makeover to go with its unusual, swooping shapes (which are not bad, just different and take a bit of getting used to).
If Lexus challenged some hot crossovers and hot hatchbacks with its spruced up UX F, then it could dramatically shift the perception of the brand and genuinely attract new types of buyers that, before this vehicle, may not ever have considered buying a Lexus.
2019 Lexus NX F SPORT Black Line Edition
The compact luxury crossover segment is no cakewalk, with huge competition pouring in from just about every corner of the globe. However, Lexus looks as though it’s holding its own here thanks to the NX. Now, the L badge is polishing up a new limited edition of the five-door and calling it the F Sport Black Line, loading it up with all the trimmings for sharper styling and a nicer experience in the cabin.
