The Lexus NX Hybrid Launches Lexus Into the Future of Electrification
While Toyota has been trying to make Hydrogen power more relevant for years now with the Mirai, they are not giving up on the more traditional form of hybrids. Their luxury brand, Lexus, has just dropped the new NX crossover, and it is the first plug-in hybrid for the Japanese luxury brand.
Thanks to Toyota, Lexus Could Have a New Baby Crossover In The works
The Toyota Yaris Cross, basically a high-riding hatchback with crossover ambitions, is one of Toyota’s newest vehicles and the company’s only subcompact crossover. Now, it looks like Toyota is going to share that love with Lexus, however, this news might not be a big deal if you live in the United States. The Tiny Lexus will share market designations with the Yaris Cross, which is currently only available in Europe, Japan, and Australia. According to the report, the Lexus crossover will be powered by the same 1.5-liter, hybrid, three-cylinder that powers the Yaris Cross. In that model, it’s good for anywhere between 90 and 118 horsepower with the electric motor – either 3.9 kW or 59 kW – adding from 5.2 to 79 horsepower into the mix.
It’s not likely that Lexus will simply rebadge the Yaris Cross, so expect the typical Lexus front end, nice interior materials, and – perhaps – a small increase in power output, at least for the higher trim levels. For the record, it would slot below the Lexus UX, which means that the trademark filing for “LBX” and “Lexus LBX” could have been hinting at its name. That said, the LBX is largely considered to be a concept, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens with that. Another rumor claims the sub-UX crossover would be called the Lexus BX, it would arrive in 2023, and would sit somewhere below the $30,000 mark. That sounds a little more like it to us, but we’ll have to see what happens.

Toyota to Show Up At CES 2018 with a Next-Gen Lexus-Based Autonomous Concept
The Toyota Research Institute has announced plans to bring its next-generation Platform 3.0 automated driving vehicle to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. Platform 3.0 is an autonomous test car that’s built on a real-life Lexus LS600hL. According to TRI, the test car incorporates sensors and cameras into its body, a development that does away with today’s setup of installing these elements as attachments on the body of the car. In addition, Platform 3.0 also has a panel of sensors on the roof that helps it become one of the most perceptive autonomous test vehicles on the road today.
The 2018 Lexus LS 500h Is Further Proof That The Hybrids Are Taking Over
Attention all you lovers of the naturally aspirated, un-electrified internal combustion engine: your days in the sun are numbered. Yep, the hybrids are coming, and in a big, big way, too. What started as a means to extend the range provided by the liquefied dinosaur juice known as gasoline has now turned into a full-fledged assault across all segments. First it was with commuters, like the Prius. Then we got outrageous hypercars like the LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder. Then it was SUVs and wagons, and now, Lexus has added hybridity to the premium sedan niche with the new LS 500h.
The big reveal just occurred at theGeneva International Motor Show, and was preceded by similar announcements from other makes also going hybrid. Porsche is one example of this, giving us the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, a top-shelf sports sedan laying down a whopping 680 horses thanks to its battery-boosted twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. Now we get this, an electrified iteration of Lexus’ brand-new four-door flagship. We first got a look at the new LS in 500 guise earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, boasting 415 horses from a twin-turbo V-6. Meanwhile, the 500h gets all the good stuff as the more traditional LWB luxury sedan, but with addition of hybrid power under the hood.
Of course, anyone who’s familiar with the history of the LS nameplate shouldn’t be all that surprised. The model has traditionally been a bastion of new technology and innovation, but I feel like this model is indicative of a larger trend in the industry to, well, hybrid all the things. 2018 Lexus LS 500h
The Lexus LS became an instant halo car when it was released in 1990 and was the very basis of which the Lexus brand was able to grow. Fast forward to today and the LS entered its fifth generation for the 2018 model year with an all-new platform, new twin-turbo V-6 drivetrain, 10-speed automatic transmission, and a sweet but sexy look with the newest iteration of Lexus’ spindle grille. But, with the introduction of a new LS Sedan, comes the introduction of a hybrid version that’s called that LS 500h – a car that sheds a bit of its V-8 high-performance hybrid roots in the name of economy. Yeah, that’s right, no V-8 hybrid system here, but we’ll talk more about that later on.
As before, the hybrid LS is very similar to the gasoline model we saw make its debut in early 2017. Actually, it only has a few blue badges on the outside and added hybrid-related features on the inside. Of course, all these are small addition to the new hybrid drivetrain under the skin. The combo pairs together a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, a couple of electric motors, and a new CVT gearbox. Output is below the regular gasoline model, but this is far from surprising. What’s important here is that the LS 500h gives you access to a gorgeous, luxurious limousine that gulps less fuel and emits less carbon-dioxide. Let’s see what it has to offer.

Lexus CT200h May Not Get Successor, Hybrid Crossover Could Take Its Place
The Lexus CT 200h is by no means a flop of a car. It routinely sells 10,000 units a year, which is a healthy number for a car of different circumstances. Unfortunately, for the CT 200h, it belongs in the premium compact market that’s worth around 750,000 cars in Europe alone. So in that respect, the CT 200h has failed to live up to the expectations of Lexus, so much so that that Lexus Europe chief Alain Uyttenhoven admitted that there’s talk of ending the CT 200h’s production when its lifespan concludes in 2018. No immediate successor has been identified, but according to Autocar, there is some sentiment that a production version of the LF-SA Concept that was shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show could eventually take the spot that will presumably be vacated by the CT 200h.
For Lexus, the rationale behind this big move is simple, at least if it does end up happening. The CT 200h isn’t selling as well as Lexus hoped relative to the segment it’s in. The company could develop a successor that’s better in every way, or it could just leave the segment entirely and concentrate on a more lucrative crossover/SUV market whose growth hasn’t shown signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The numbers even back it up because of the 652,000 units that Lexus sold all over the world in 2015, the Lexus NX and RX accounted for close to half of that number with both models selling roughly 150,000 units apiece. Lexus even expects the NX and RX to add to those sales numbers in 2016 to about 170,000 and 200,000 units, respectively.
Having a hybrid crossover to slot below the NX isn’t a guarantee of booming sales, but with customers tripping over themselves to buy crossovers and SUVs, the ceiling for a new model would be significantly higher compared to a successor to the CT 200h, even if the premium compact market is healthy in its own right.
And don’t be fooled by the robust sales numbers because Lexus isn’t doing as well as it likes in Europe, where it sold only 64,000 units across the board in 2015. That’s less than 10 percent of the company’s total sales volume. Uyttenhoven even said that the rough going across the pond is largely tied to the company having only one model – the CT 200h – in the sub-€40,000 ($45,000) bracket, which he adds accounts for “50 percent of the European luxury car market.”
So the question boils down to what the Lexus CT 200h can offer compared to a new hybrid crossover. From the looks of things, Lexus appears to be leaning towards the new crossover, a move that makes sense if it really wants to take a bigger piece of the crossover/SUV pie.

Second Generation Lexus LF-A Could Happen After All
Back in 2014, the shot-callers over at Lexus apparently had no idea of what was going on with the future of the Lexus LF-A. Once production of the supercar ended in 2012, the original word was that the LF-A wouldn’t get a successor. Come August of 2014, Executive Vice President, Mark Templin, confirmed that there would be a successor to the LF-A. Just a month later, Yukihiko Yaguchi – the Chief Engineer over at Lexus – said there were no active plans to build a successor. Now, after more than two years, someone is playing with the LF-A yo-yo again, but this time it isn’t Lexus.
According to Response – a Japanese website – Lexus is planning to introduce a new LF-A at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. If you recall, past rumors suggested that Lexus and BMW were teaming up to build a new hypercar that would essentially be the LF-A’s successor, and boast at least 1,000 horsepower. The Japanese website, however, is saying the LF-A successor that is coming to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show will be powered by a 3.7-liter, hybrid V-8 that produces upward of 800 horsepower.
Of course, this rumor from the Japanese website doesn’t really have a lot of merit at this point. The powers that be over at Lexus have remained pretty firm about there being no successor to the LF-A. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t something in the works over at Lexus. Back in February of 2015, we reported that Lexus wasn’t giving up on future performance halo vehicles. At the time, Mark Templin said, “I think you will see us do some incredible things in the future, but probably not a $375,000 supercar anytime soon.”
So the question is, do you believe the reports from the Japanese website, or are they just puffing smoke trying to get some attention? We hope that the newest rumor is true, but we’ll just have to wait and see. If the rumor gets enough traction, it will eventually be answered on by Lexus execs again. Until then, the name of the game is hoping and waiting.

2017 Lexus LC 500h
It’s been a little more than two months since we entered a new calendar year and Toyota is arguably the busiest automaker out there. On one hand it decided to axe the Scion sub-brand, while on the other hand, it is working on an expansion program for the Lexus division, which received a brand-new member at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. It is called the LC 500 — it’s drop dead gorgeous, and sports the RC-F’s naturally aspirated V-8 under the hood. We’ve already speculated about the possibility of getting an LC F and LC 500 Convertible in the coming years, and Lexus has just announced that the luxury coupe will go hybrid.
The first derivative of the LC 500 family will break cover at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and, unsurprisingly, will be sold as the LC 500h. The new vehicle will expand Lexus’ hybrid lineup to seven nameplates, but more importantly, it will become the company’s first two-door with a blue badge on its nose.
The two-door hybrid, which is also based on the LF-LC concept., will debut alongside the LF-FC study, which made its first appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2015. The GS is the second-largest sedan you can buy from Lexus, and it is one of the most luxurious. It comes loaded with all the leather, wood and technology you would expect from the brand, but it comes with something most Lexus models are missing; a touch of anger and performance. Lexus sells the GS with an adjustable sports suspension, an F Sport model and even a hybrid that promises to let you have fun.
Lexus has proven that it can do some great things with the F brand, but I had to laugh at the idea of a fun hybrid from the brand. Low and behold a Starfire Pearl colored GS450h rolled into my driveway for me to beat and cane on for a whole week. After experiencing what Porsche can do with the Panamera Hybrid, I was interested to see if Lexus could make a hybrid that was “fun.”
It has more than 300 horsepower, promises more than 30 mpg, and it looks great to boot. If there was ever going to be a hybrid from the Toyotafamily that I would enjoy, it would be this one. Let’s jump and in and drop the hammer; it’s time to see what this thing is made of.

Lexus unveiled the 2014 GS 450h in September 2013, so it’s a little surprising that the automaker took a full year to launch the GS 450h F Sport. Despite the lack of an F Sport package for a year, the GS 450h remained a really, really sharp car that crossed out just about every item on our checklist. Giving it a sporty F Sport package simply makes it an even sweeter package.
The F Sport package is a new addition to the 2015 GS 450h. It may not come with any engine upgrades that bump the car’s already potent 338-horsepower output, but there are still enough performance upgrades to give it a sportier look and ride. Besides, the F Sport is mostly about making small improvements to many parts of the car, not just focusing on one aspect of the car and leaving the rest entirely untouched.
The exterior and interior of the GS 450h F Sport both receive notable upgrades, plus improved technology. Most importantly, all these changes didn’t cost the GS 450h its notable EPA rating, which is still estimated at 31 mpg combined.
Lexus looks like it has another knockout model to add to its growing F Sport lineup. At some point, it stops being surprising and starts becoming expected.

It goes without saying that the Lexus CT 200h is about as unique a car you can find for a hybrid hatch. Lexus has done a lot of work to bring out the best of this model in the past few years, even adding the unique spindle grille styling for the 2014 model. But even that wasn’t enough for the company because lo and behold, we now have the CT 200h F Sport.
The graduation from the standard model to the one with an F Sport stamp of approval is mostly limited to aesthetic and aerodynamic changes, but the difference between the two is pretty drastic, particularly on how sportier and more aggressive the front section of the CT 200h F Sport looks. Those inserts really do a lot to bring out the hybrid’s menacing look, right?
We certainly think so, and that’s one of the reasons why we think highly of the model, other than its obvious performance and efficiency numbers.

Next week we’ll have two major auto shows that most of you likely already know about: one in Los Angeles and one in Tokyo, Japan. There is, however, a smaller show that is coming up in China, and that it the 2013 Guangzhou Motor Show. Despite its relatively small size, Lexus has chosen this show to debut the updated Lexus CT 200h.
With just a few days before its official debut, which occurs on November 21st, Lexus has unveiled the first details and a few images of the revised hybrid hatchback.
According to Lexus, the 2014 CT 200h will adopt the signature Lexus spindle grille, newly designed alloy wheels and a revised rear appearance with a "more horizontal structure."
Lexus didn’t give up any of the details on its powertrain, but we expect to see the same hybrid system, with the possibility of a few more horsepower and some fuel consumption improvements. This means you can expect to see a 1.8-liter gasoline-powered four-pot with a pair of electric motors that combine to put down 134 horsepower at least.
Updated 11/29/2013: Lexus announced prices for the 2014 CT 200h, which will go on sale in late January or early February 2014. Prices will start from the same $32,050 as the 2013 model, plus processing and handling fee of $910.

Lexus added a hybrid version to its GS lineup for the first time in 2006 when the model was in its third generation. Once the fourth-generation GS was announced for the 2013 model year, the GS 450h was also updated with a more aggressive exterior look, a more powerful engine and improved fuel economy.
For the 2014 model year, the GS 450h will evolve even further, thanks to some new features. Lexus will add new standard features like Siri Eyes Free technology licensed from Apple and Climate Concierge.
Lexus also updated The Luxury Package with new features, like LED fog lights, a Liquid Graphite finish for the 18-inch wheels and the discontinuing of the Lexus Night View system. A series of new optional features will also be added to the model.
Under the hood, the GS 450h keeps the usual Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive system that helps it deliver some of the best fuel economy in its class.

A few days ago, Lexus announced that they would be headed to the 2012 Paris Auto Show with a new concept car, and as promised, the company has released the first details and images on this new concept ahead of schedule. The new LF-CC is an evolution of the LF-LC 2+2 Sports Coupe Concept which debuted at the Detroit show earlier this year, but the new concept comes with rear-wheel drive and full hybrid power.
The new Lexus LF-CC Concept displays the latest evolution of Lexus’ L-finesse design language and it also previews a new premium mid-size Lexus coupe set to be unveiled in the near future (aka the successor to the SC sports coupe). The concept features the same powertrain that will be used in the eventual production version, which is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine combined with a compact, high-output electric motor which takes its power from a high-performance battery. Specifications for the new hybrid system will be announced at a later date.
UPDATE 09/20/2012: Following the release of the first official details on the new Lexus LF-CC Concept, the first promo video of the concept has been released. Stay tuned as all of the official details will follow at the 2012 Paris Auto Show next week!.
UPDATE 11/30/2012: In a recent interview with AutoCar, a senior Lexus engineer confirmed that the company is indeed planning a production version of the LF-CC and it will arrive on the market in 2015. The LF-CC will fill the gap left by the previous SC model, which was discontinued in 2010. The production version of the LF-CC will be offered in both coupe and convertible versions, and will be built on the same platform as the new IS and GS models. We’re not too sure if the LF-CC will look identical to the concept model, but we anticipate that it won’t be too far from it. (AutoCar)

The second iteration of the Lexus LF-LC Concept, previously dubbed the LF-LC 2, has now been revealed. It’s called the LF-LC Blue Concept and if we weren’t trying to outsmart ourselves, we would’ve though it was dubbed as the Blue Concept because of something garish done to the car.
The truth is, it’s called the LF-LC Blue Concept because the car has been finished in an Opal Blue color, a color that Lexus describes as inspired by the "lustrous base color found in the naturally occurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia." Okay, so maybe there is something behind the color.
Nevertheless, the LF-LC Blue Concept comes dressed to the party looking a whole lot like the original LF-LC Concept we saw in early 2012 at the Detroit Auto Show. Make no mistake, though, the former has some new features that the original didn’t.

The Lexus LF-Lc concept car was unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, only to be rumored for immediate production just a short time later. The edgy sports car with hard lines and bold interpretation of the signature Lexus spindle grille and rear architecture made it a vehicle unlike anything in the Lexus lineup, and people couldn’t wait to see its production counterpart.
That wait has just been extended.
Lexus has announced that they will be attending the 2012 Australian Motor Show in Sydney in October and they will be bringing the second iteration of the LF-Lc Concept to the party. They haven’t revealed any details on the concept other than this teaser image as of right now, but we expect to see something that is similar to the original concept, possibly with less drastic design features to lessen the hit when the production model comes out looking nothing like the original. This second concept is rumored to wear an LC 600h badge and will be powered by a 5.0 liter V8 engine combined with an electric motor for a total output of 500 HP. This power figure will be enough to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds.
What we do know about the second LF-Lc Concept is purely speculation based so we’ll all have to wait until October to see what Lexus has in store. Our hopes lie with a sooner rather than later production model that is a successor for the company’s SC sports car.
Aside from debuting the standard LS 460 in San Francisco, Lexus has also unveiled the hybrid version of their new LS line-up: the LS 600h L. The model features the same exterior design language as the standard LS 460, but combines a 5.0 liter V8 engine with two electric motors for a total output of 438 HP, making it the most powerful LS in the line-up. It will be offered with full-time AWD system.
The new LS 600h L measures a total of 205 inches in length, 73.8 inches in width, and 58.3 inches in height, and offers seating capacity for five people. The exterior will offer the same inverted trapezoid-shaped upper and bottom-wide lower grille, LED headlights, and a new set of 19" alloy wheels in a seven spoke design. Customers will distinguish the model thanks to its hybrid-specific characteristics, including blue accents in the front headlamps, front and rear "L" badges, "Hybrid" side badging, a "600h" badge on the rear, and an "LS 600h L" badge on the engine cover.

It’s only been a few weeks since Lexus unveiled the new generation Lexus GS350, and now they are rounding up the crowd again with the debut of the GS 450h at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A relatively young model on the market - it was first unveiled in 2007 - the GS 450H is now the world’s first premium performance sedan to be equipped with a V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine and two-motor hybrid system.
The hybrid system combines an Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 engine with a two-motor hybrid system in a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration. They both deliver a total of 338 HP and will sprint the GS 450h from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Fuel economy has also been improved by 30%. The model will be equipped with a Drive Mode selector that will allow the driver to choose between Eco, Sport S, Sport S+ and EV modes.

The first generation Lexus ES has been unveiled in 1989 and 2013 model year marks both the introduction of the sixth generation, but also the first-ever hybrid model of the line-up: the ES 300h.
The new ES 300h will be offered with the Lexus Hybrid Drive that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with an electric motor for a total of 200 HP and an impressive fuel economy of 39 mpg combined. The car can hit a top speed of 112 mph and will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.1 seconds and the quarter mile in 16.8 seconds.
"Since its introduction in 1989, the ES has been the benchmark luxury sedan for quality, reliability, ride comfort and value," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "The new ES 350 and the first ever ES hybrid raise the bar once again."< /p>
Updated 07/16/2012: Lexus has announced today that the 2013 ES 300h will arrive at dealerships next month. The model will be priced at $38,850, representing a difference of $2,750 over the ES 350 - priced at $36,100.
