2021 Lexus LS
The LS is Lexus. Or Lexus is LS. Whichever you want to put it. The luxury sedan debuted in 1989 and marked Lexus’ entrance on the U.S. market, but it also went on to become the company’s main pillar and foundation.
After more than 30 years, the Lexus LS is still doing battle against the German trifecta made of BMW’s 7 Series, Audi’s A8, and Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class. That’s why Lexus won’t compromise when it comes to its flagship sedan. Hence the updated 2021 LS we’re about to discuss.
2019 Toyota Research P4 Automated Driving Test Vehicle
Toyota seems to be on a roll at CES. The company showcased its technology called ‘Guardian’ a couple of days back, and now, it has unveiled the TRI-P4 automated driving test vehicle. The P4 is based on the all-new fifth-generation Lexus LS 500h and will be used in Toyota Research Institute’s Guardian and Chauffeur automated driving system development.
2018 Lexus LS Custom
Lexus was in attendance at the 2018 SEMA Auto Show with a number of show-stopping offerings, including a custom Lexus LS 500 F Sport. The new take on the LS 500 F Sport is far more subtle than you’d want it to be, but it does offer a glimpse of the LS 500 F Sport’s tuning potential. It comes with a full custom wrap, a new set of wheels, a performance brake kit, and an extensive aerodynamic kit that bolsters the LS F Sport’s appearance. For a car that acts as Lexus’ flagship sedan, these upgrades bring out a side of the LS that none of us get to see regularly. In other words, these upgrades are exactly what the doctor ordered.
2018 Toyota Research Institute Platform 3.0 Autonomous Car
A few years ago, concept cars were mostly about futuristic design features and new technology. This is still available today, but most automakers are including semi or fully autonomous driving systems in their show cars. This technology is supposed to become a production feature in 2021, and everyone is racing to get there first. Toyota is among those companies, and it just introduced an update to the LIDAR-equipped Lexus that it showed off twice in 2017. It’s still built around the old LS600hL — the Japanese firm launched a new LS last year — but it’s now called Platform 3.0 and comes with numerous upgrades.
The company’s Research Institute teamed up with more firms and departments than ever to create the third prototype, including CALTY Design Research in Michigan, Toyota Motor North America Research and Development, and Luminar. The latter has recently developed the most powerful LIDAR system on the market, which made its debut on this autonomous Lexus. Production of the
bound concept car is scheduled to commence this spring, but volume will be kept low, and all vehicles will be built for testing purposes only. Let’s find out more about Toyota’s most performant autonomous car yet in the review below.

2017 Lexus LS+ Concept
The fifth-generation Lexus LS just hit the market this year, but the Japanese automaker is already looking ahead into the future with a new concept for its flagship sedan that’s heavy on state-of-the-art technology. The concept is called the LS+, and if you were thinking it to be outlandish in the typical Lexus concept fashion, then you’d be right. The LS+ Concept is a feast for the senses in more ways than one.
We already have an idea of how Lexus does concept vehicles. The NX Concept from a few years ago blasted our expectations through the roof, and it’s nice to see that Toyota’s premium brand isn’t letting up. This car, Lexus says, is going to be a showcase of what the LS could look like down the road. It’s not a certainty that this blueprint will be put to use in the future, but as far as giving us a taste of what could come, then it hits all the right spots. It looks the part of a futuristic concept though more important than that are the litany of tech features that it comes with, including the curiously named “Highway Teammate” automated driving technology that brings autonomous driving tech to life. That’s just one of the technology goodies we can expect from the LS+ Concept, so expect a whole lot more now that the full-sized beauty is sitting pretty at the Tokyo Motor Show.

2019 Lexus LS F
The latest-generation Lexus LS was unveiled in early 2017, replacing a predecessor that was no less than 11 years old and quite dated compared to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. Redesigned from a clean sheet and gifted with a sporty, youthful exterior and loads of new tech inside, the fifth-gen LS also brought major changes under the hood, with the 5.0-liter V-8 engine replaced by a twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V-6. The same unit was combined with an electric motor to spawn the LS 500h, but it has yet to be used in a more powerful version, with the F Sport being just an appearance package. This is likely to change in the future, as our paparazzi spotted a full fledged LS F on public roads.
Although the LS has been around since 1990 and it’s one of the most successful full-size sedans built in Asia, it has yet to receive a proper performance update. There have been some special-edition models with sportier looks, but for some reason Lexus said no to a beefed-up drivetrain with each generation. But it seems that the fifth-generation will finally get the performance version it deserves, enabling the LS to finally compete with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S63, BMW M760i xDrive and upcoming, much-rumored BMW M7 and Audi RS8. 2018 Lexus LS 500 F Sport
Lexus’ oldest nameplate, having been launched in 1989, the LS moved into its fifth-generation in January 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show. Redesigned after a record ten years of minor changes, the LS is now sportier and more stylish than ever, and its interior is on par with what the competition has to offer. But, unlike its predecessor, a V-8 is no longer under the hood, having been replaced by a more powerful, yet more efficient V-6 drivetrain. Offered in both gasoline and hybrid variants, the LS is now also available in F Sport trim. But even though it has a somewhat more aggressive exterior and acts as a range topper, the F Sport isn’t as special as Lexus wants us to believe.
The reason for that is that the F Sport badge doesn’t bring much beyond the blacked-out exterior trim and a few special features on the inside. Sure, there are a few chassis tweaks to talk about, but the engine and transmission are as stock as they get. The problem with this is that the F Sport badge deserves a bit of extra oomph and it’s imperative that Lexus comes up with a way to give Mercedes-Benz and BMW a run for their money in the performance department too. With the new BMW M760Li and Mercedes-AMG S63 around with fresh gear, the LS 500 F Sport will have a hard time making a name for itself.

2018 Lexus LS 500h
The Lexus LS became an instant halo car when it was released in 1990 and was the very basis of which the Lexus brand was able to grow. Fast forward to today and the LS entered its fifth generation for the 2018 model year with an all-new platform, new twin-turbo V-6 drivetrain, 10-speed automatic transmission, and a sweet but sexy look with the newest iteration of Lexus’ spindle grille. But, with the introduction of a new LS Sedan, comes the introduction of a hybrid version that’s called that LS 500h – a car that sheds a bit of its V-8 high-performance hybrid roots in the name of economy. Yeah, that’s right, no V-8 hybrid system here, but we’ll talk more about that later on.
As before, the hybrid LS is very similar to the gasoline model we saw make its debut in early 2017. Actually, it only has a few blue badges on the outside and added hybrid-related features on the inside. Of course, all these are small addition to the new hybrid drivetrain under the skin. The combo pairs together a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, a couple of electric motors, and a new CVT gearbox. Output is below the regular gasoline model, but this is far from surprising. What’s important here is that the LS 500h gives you access to a gorgeous, luxurious limousine that gulps less fuel and emits less carbon-dioxide. Let’s see what it has to offer.

2018 Lexus LS 500
The LS full-size luxury sedan is an extremely important model for Lexus. First introduced for the 1990 model year, the LS is essentially the torchbearer for Lexus’ values, offering the greatest possible comfort, style, and technology that the brand can muster. In case you were unaware, the LS nameplate stands for “luxury sedan,” and as the company’s flagship, it basically helped usher in the Lexus brand nearly three decades ago. Now, with a debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, there’s a new-generation model on deck for the 2018 model year, and it’s got a coupe-like exterior design, a roomy four-door interior, a new platform under the skin, a new twin-turbo V-6 and 10-speed automatic, and optional cutting-edge safety technology.
It’s called the LS 500, and it promises the “greatest-ever LS agility and comfort.” Lexus is also touting the new LS as the embodiment of traditional Japanese philosophies of hospitality and craftsmanship. Lexus will begin selling the new LS in late 2017 as a 2018 model, bringing it globally to 90 different markets. The most important market will be the U.S., but there’s no shortage of competition in this segment, so rest assured the brand won’t be pulling any punches.

Being Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus is tasked with making high-end vehicles that compete with Germany’s best and Cadillac’s finest. Sitting atop the Lexus lineup is this, the LS sedan. It’s longer, wider, and more luxurious (obviously) than any other Lexus, giving it the role as the flagship sedan. Though its main rivals, the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class, have been around much longer and have larger customer bases, the underdog Lexus comes out swinging.
The LS sedan comes in a variety of flavors, including the “base” LS460, the extended LS460 L, the LS460 F Sport, and the hybrid LS600h L. Most models come standard with RWD but offer AWD as an option. The hybrid is the exception, having AWD only. Power ratings range from 386 horsepower in the LS460 up to 438 horsepower in the LS600h L. That might not compete with AMG, but the 4.6-liter V-8 holds its own.
To put the LS sedan to the test, Lexus sent me a well-equipped LS460 dressed in the F Sport package. The car came decked out with the Comfort Package and Mark Levinson audio system, which added heated and vented front seats, a power-operated rear sunshade, power-operated trunk, and 19 speakers.
Initial impressions reminded me of the 2014 Lexus GS 450h, a sedan I tested previously, though with the hybrid powertrain. While there are huge differences between the two sedans, their unassuming characters of luxury and serenity are similar. Still, the LS460 rises above in terms of comfort, features, and of course, cost.

The Lexus LS is the crown jewel of Lexus’ luxury car lineup. It also belongs in a segment that includes the Mercedes S-Class, the Audi A8, and the BMW 7 Series. That’s the epitome of competition right there. So how does Lexus separate the LS 460 F Sport from this three-headed German monster? Create a special edition line with TUMI, the ultimate lifestyle and accessories manufacturer, of course.
The collaboration between the Japanese auto brand and the high-end lifestyle and accessories company is called The Crafted Line. The good news is that the Crafted Line is available across a wide range of Lexus models. The bad news, at least in the case of the LS 460 F Sport, is that it has the fewest allotment of available models at just 750 units.
The LS 460 F Sport might feel slighted that the ES and the RX 350 F Sport both received 1,500 units of the Crafted Line, but look at this way, the LS 460 F Sport is the one model that can still stand out even without the goodies that come with the Crafted Line. That comes with the territory of already being a high-end luxury sedan.
The flip side to that is its exclusivity. With just 750 units available, we expect the LS 460 F Sport Crafted Line Edition to have plenty of interested buyers as soon as the model is launched in November 2014. In the meantime, look for the entire Crafted Line collection to be featured prominently at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.

Lexus’ determination to bring the fight in the luxury car segment manifests itself in the form of the 2014 LS sedan.
Available in the LS 460, the LS 460 L, and the LS 460 F Sport, the LS line is getting the attention it deserves, thanks in large part to a new styling language that made its debut on the 2013 model.
A year later, and the 2014 LS retains that same dynamic character with some new additions on the body and in the cabin to make it even more of an attractive luxury car that touches on a lot of Lexus’ growing profile as a player in the market.
One engine is still offered in the 2014 model, and that’s a bit of a letdown. But for the most part, all of the new digs added to the 2014 LS all contribute in giving the luxury sedan more appeal to its customers.
Belonging in a segment that includes the Mercedes S-Class, the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series, it deserves to be given a shot to compete.

Shortly after the Los Angeles Auto Show closes its doors, the 2012 Essen Motor Show — basically the European version of the SEMA Show — will kick off. Despite its relative coolness, the vast majority of people outside of Europe don’t pay it much attention. However, we have to tell you that this year’s edition is looking like it will be pretty amazing.
One Essen-bound model that has our automotive hearts pumping is Lexus’ LS-based TS-650 package. To make things even more interesting, Lexus has just dropped the first teaser images of this upcoming show car.
The new TS-650 prototype will feature an aerodynamics package that includes a carbon-fiber hood and several other carbon-fiber components, a set of BBS alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires and a set of carbon-ceramic brakes.
Under the hood there will be a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with a pair of turbochargers strapped to it. Unfortunately, the output hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we certainly hope that the "650" in its name is a reference to the horsepower.
Updated 11/27/2012: With just three days before its official debut at the Essen Motor Show, TMG has released the first images and details on its TMG Sports 650 concept. This high-end limousine-sized car is powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 650 horsepower — just like its name suggests. The engine is mated to an eight-speed high-torque-capacity transmission and the car sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, while top speed is limited to 198 mph.
