The 2019 Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition Has Sold Out but It’s Not Over Yet
Lincoln brought back the nostalgia of the 1960s with its Continental Coach Door Edition last year. The automaker plans to produce just 80 examples of the suicide door edition Continental at a premium of $40,000 over the top-of-the-line Continental. Despite the exorbitant price tag, Lincoln sold all the 80 copies within three days of its launch! If you were planning to get one and think you have lost your chance, do not fret. Lincoln will soon be producing more of the Coach Door Editions as a 2020 model.

There have been quite a few instances where the buried nomenclatures have been resurrected to remind people of the goodwill that the name carried. Now, Lincoln has planned to change the name of the Lincoln MKC for the 2021 model. It will then be known as the Corsair going forward. Will that help increase the sales figures?
Despite Ford’s Execution of Sedans, Lincoln Says That it Remains Committed
There is a lot of discussion surrounding the extinction of sedans. Ford has already killed them in North America due to dwindling demands, but Lincoln will keep the ’traditional cars’ running. A spokesperson from Ford has said that Lincoln will remain committed to producing sedans. We are not sure what the rationale behind this is, as the response has not been great for the Lincoln sedans; with MKZ sales falling 34.4-percent and the Continental going down by 25.1-percent in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2018 alone.

The Lincoln Aviator turned a lot of heads at the 2018 New York Auto Show. Actually, it did more than turn heads. It brought life back to a brand that has struggled to keep pace with its European rivals. Now, there’s more good news coming out of Lincoln. According to a high-ranking official from the company, the production version of the Aviator will look a lot like the concept version that was unveiled in New York.
Lincoln Could Bring Back Rear-Hinged Doors on The Continental, but is it Enough to Fend Off the Cadillac CT6 and Mercedes S-Class?
Lincoln is going back to its roots. The luxury American brand is planning to bring back suicide doors on an upcoming version of the Continental sedan, harkening back to a time — the 60’s — when the unconventional door design was a staple on the iconic nameplate. The automaker didn’t reveal when the suicide doors will return, but it is largely seen as a step in resuscitating some life back to the once proud model.

Ford has reportedly spent over $1 billion to bring the Lincoln Continental back to the market, some 14 years after it was originally discontinued. Now, sources “intricately familiar with FMC’s future product plans,” say that the continental will be discontinued once this generation exceeds its lifespan. While those that are fans of the Continental may shutter after reading those words, there’s a good reason – you’re a dying breed. And, so is the large sedan, apparently.
2017 Lincoln Continental Garnering Strong Interest From Would-Be Customers
It’s not quite the numbers the Tesla Model 3 has been receiving in recent days, but the public interest surrounding the 2017 Lincoln Continental is real. According to Automotive News, close to 40,000 people have come up to the American automaker and expressed their interest in the company’s iconic flagship sedan. While the number only portrays a list of people that provided their name and contact information for follow-ups when more details about the Continental become available, it does point to a renewed interest in the model and the brand, something Lincoln hasn’t seen in recent years.
Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln, told Automotive News that this so-called “hand raiser” list for the new Continental has seen twice as many people compared to that of the MKX crossover that the automaker introduced in 2015. The surprisingly positive reception of the Continental has reached Lincoln and according to VanDyke, here are already measures that are being put in place, including extensive pre-launch activities, to keep the buzz and interest surrounding the Continental clicking on all cylinders.
Granted, none of this paints a clear picture on what kind of sales run the Continental will have when it goes on sale in the fall of 2016 as a 2017 model. But for a company that has only begun to regain its competitive footing after years of languishing in mediocrity, this is the kind of validation that empowers Lincoln to press forward with renewed vigor and determination to keep this positive momentum rolling. When the time comes that the new Continental hits dealerships, there will be expectations now that weren’t there before. It’s a position that Lincoln hasn’t been in for quite some time, yet, I presume, it will gladly embrace instead of languishing in mediocrity.

The 2013 Lincoln MKS has never been a great seller (like most Lincolns these days), as it’s seen sales drop by 19.1 percent so far this year to just 3,304 units. Apparently, Lincoln has had enough and it’s just announced that it will officially discontinue the fledgling sedan in 2016.
Ford Motor Company manufactures the MKS in its Chicago plant and it shares its platform with the 2014 Ford Taurus. According to Ford, however, the elimination of the MKS will not affect the Taurus.
Most rumors point toward the Continental, which Lincoln showed off in concept form at the 2015 New York Auto Show, replacing the MKS in the near future. The 2017 Lincoln Continentalwill likely feature a potent 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that puts down around 350 horsepower. There may also be an EcBoost four-cylinder available.
Until the day the Continental finally takes that flagship position that the MKS occupies now, look for Lincoln to do what it can to rid itself of the remaining MKS units. This may prove difficult, given its recent sales slump, but Ford will likely offer plenty of discounts to help keep the inventory moving.
It’s doubtful anyone will miss the MKS, nor is this much of a shock. In fact, this is pretty good news, as it will open the door for the debut of the production-version Continental.

Times were hard for most people. Fresh off an expensive, drawn-out and disastrous war, in the aftermath of financial collapse, the population as a whole wasn’t entirely enthusiastic about buying big, American luxury sedans. Even though there were some true greats on the drawing board, most had to wait for a nation just entering its richest era to demand more prestigious transportation. Afterward, old ideas and names came back, and makes like Lincoln experienced a renaissance. That was the story in 1938...and again some 75 years later.
Of course, the difference between then and now is that the nation just entering its richest period isn’t the United States, but China. Say what you will about them, but the Chinese (like many current and former communist countries) absolutely love big, American luxury sedans — without a doubt, more than most Americans do. Makes like Buick, Cadillac and Lincoln have found a wonderfully enthusiastic market among people who spent decades quietly watching American presidents cruise those prestigious badges around the capitalist capitol. Or, in at least one sobering example, a certain city in the lower Midwest.
Now, having recently discovered money, they want their own.
And after a 14 year hiatus, Lincoln is ready to give it to them, in the form of a reborn Continental. Oh yes, there’s a load of irony in that...but the good news is that China’s long-rebuffed love of American luxury has triggered kind of a bounce-back on our own shores. For the first time since the dark days of the Smog Era, American luxury makes like Lincoln have become serious contenders to take the halo of quality from Germany. Maybe it’s taken a bit of outside perspective, a look to the present from the past, to remind us of of just how great some of our greatest once were...and could be again.
So continue reading to take a look back at one of them now: the inimitable Lincoln Continental.
We have already been over Cadillac’s “automated” driving system, which is basically just an adaptive cruise control system that takes over the steering too. Basically, it is not a true automated driving system, but it is semi-autonomous. Well, we all knew that Ford wouldn’t just sit back and watch GM take over this realm, as it has just announced that its engineers are working on a slightly similar, but far more restrictive, system.
The system that Ford is working on is called Traffic Jam Assist, and it does exactly what its name tells you. When you’re get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you can enable this system and it will move the car with traffic and keep it within the lines. This frees up your hands to do far more important things than look at the road, like text message, enjoy a coffee and doughnut, or reprogram your stereo system.
One the traffic clears up, the system asks you to take over and you’re then forced to attempt to complete the uncompleted tasks that you started in traffic while driving… What a bummer.
Ford has even released a video displaying the system, and we have to say that on 99 percent of the roads in the U.S. with heavy congestion, we doubt this system will do little more than increase your stress. From what we can see, this system waits for the car in front to get a good car length or two ahead of you before moving your car forward. That just may induce a few “friendly” honks and one finger salutes from the less patient drivers behind you.
So, unless Ford can develop a way to have the system respond more quickly, we can see this being a really cool feature until you catch the first severe traffic jam. Fortunately, this system is nowhere near ready for release, so Ford has lots of time to perfect it.

Ford Motor Company is desperately trying to breathe some life into its nearly deceased luxury brand, Lincoln. A recent lineup overhaul was step one, and we definitely see improvement to date. The next step appears to be to develop a new rear-wheel drive car to add to Lincoln’s lineup to face off against the likes of the Cadillac ATS and BMW 3-Series.
Lincolns will not have to look too far for a donor rear-wheel-drive car that is willing and able to donate a platform for this new Lincoln. According to Car and Driver, Ford is seriously contemplating using the 2015 Ford Mustang platform as the Lincoln’s base. If that ends up being the case, we could not only be in for seeing the first rear-wheel drive Lincoln in some time, but also we could see the first performance-based Lincoln since who knows when.
This could end up going in either direction. On the good side, it could result in the Lincoln brand being seen as “cool” again and drawing in young buyers. Then again, once Mustang enthusiasts find out that the Mustang underpinnings have become modular, they could lose interest rather quickly.
We would love nothing more than to see Lincoln succeed. It has one of the longest and most storied histories in all of the automotive realm. That said, you don’t want to alienate the bases that you already have. Ford needs to make sure that, if it decides to go this route, they change the Mustang’s underpinnings enough so when under the Lincoln name, Mustang owners can notice a difference and feel satisfied.
On the other hand, Lincoln, despite its struggles, does have a loyal customer base, so Ford has to be sure not to alienate them. We’ll keep an eye on this situation and let you know if anything else comes up.
Ford is hoping to move Lincoln up the automotive ladder, and in order to accomplish this goal, the company will cut at least 200 dealers, mostly in major metropolitan areas.
"The future direction of the Lincoln ownership experience has been charted on a joint basis between Ford Motor and select dealer representatives," spokesman Christian Bokich told Automotive News. "It is important that Lincoln dealers are the first to hear about this information from the company."
Ford’s luxury brand currently has 1,221 U.S. stores, with around 276 stand-along Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Up to 40 percent of these dealers will be cut, as Lexus, the nation’s leading luxury brand, has just 236 stores. Maybe Lincoln should be cutting 40 percent of its chrome as well.
The company currently ranks eighth among luxury brands and should sell around 83,000 vehicles in 2010. With so many dealers, the company sells fewer cars per outlet than any other luxury brand. Ford hopes that these cuts will help that statistic.
They are dropping like flies around Ford. With Mercury going down, Ford will now only have Lincoln to fund and the extra cash will definitely be going into refreshing and expanding the Lincoln line-up. The first model to be added to the line-up will be a compact 4WD vehicle. There are no official details on this particular model as of yet, but it is believed to be a crossover based on the next-generationKuga crossover from Europe. Look at the Lincoln C concept from the 2009 Detroit show and we might be getting a glimpse of the crossover to come.
The future crossover won’t be the only thing getting added to the lineup. Lincoln will also be bringing a redesigned version of the MKZ and a new Mid-sized sedan based on the next-generation Ford Mondeo. The MKS will also receive a redesign in 2012, with a completely new version coming in 2016.
But wait, there’s more. In 2011, Lincoln will drop the Town Car and offer a facelift for the MKX. A redesign for the MKX is expected in 2014. The MKT will be redesigned for 2012, but most likely dropped in 2014. And finally the Navigator; it will receive a facelift in 2012 and a new EcoBoost engine with a 5.0-liter V-8 within the next few years.
