In what has already been the most challenging year of our lifetime, the malaise surrounding 2020 isn’t getting going away anytime soon, at least not for Lotus. The British automaker had planned to showcase the Evija hypercar by the latter of the year, but those plans have since been scuttled because of circumstances beyond the automaker’s control.
The culprit? The COVID-19 pandemic. Repeated delays in the development of the Evija have forced Lotus to move the car’s highly anticipated debut to the first of 2021. It’s rough news for all those who have been waiting earnestly — us included — for the Evija’s arrival to at least bring some measure of excitement to what has so far been a crappy year. Unfortunately, this pandemic has no regard for our feelings as it continues to wreak havoc all over the world.

Here’s Why the Evija Supercar Will Save Lotus
Lotus just unveiled the Evija, and it set some serious benchmark for itself. Its first-ever supercar, the Evija is also the first all-electric production vehicle powered by electricity alone. On top of that, Lotus claims that it will become the world’s most powerful production car with an output of 2,000 PS, which converts to an unbelievable 1,972 horsepower. Lotus also promises a 250-mile range and charging times of only nine minutes. Many claim that Lotus made a mistake with this car, but the Evija could be the vehicle that saves the British brand financially.

Lotus has shown its most powerful and most extreme car ever, the Evija all-electric hypercar. In fact, according to the specs published by the U.K.-based sports car maker (now owned by Chinese giant Geely), it will be the most powerful production car ever made, just nudging ahead of the likes of thePininfarina Battista.
It’s a truly gorgeous looking thing, with typical Lotus design but rendered in a more futuristic manner that not only makes the car stand out, but at the same time it makes it look far more exclusive than anything the automaker has previously sold. However, while I love the way it looks, there’s something a bit peculiar about its claimed performance - to me, the amount of power and torque and the declared benchmark sprint time just don’t add up. I think it should be faster than they say it is, so keep on reading as I try to elaborate as to why.
Opinion: The Lotus Evija is a Big Mistake for the Brand
The Lotus Evija, a £1.7 million ($2.1 million at current exchange rates) all-electric hypercar, has just been announced, and I’m already wondering just WTF Lotus is thinking. Sure, it probably has a lot to do with Geely backing the brand now – Lotus actually has some money to play with – but we’re talking about a brand that has been selling $50,000 - $120,000 cars for years. We’re talking about a company that posted its first self-proclaimed profit in years back in August of 2017. And, we’re talking about a company that hasn’t presented an all-new car in more than a decade (hello Lotus Evora) and has managed to soldier on by building random and slightly more potent versions of existing cars. Yet, here we are looking at a $2 million Lotus. This just doesn’t seem like the right move, and I have good reason why.
Did Lotus Just Rewrite The Book on All-Electric Supercars with the 2020 Evija?
Lotus hasn’t released a truly new car since it launched the Evora back 2008. Since then, it’s made continuous improvements to it, the Elise, and Exige, but the new 2020 Lotus Evija is the first new Lotus in over a decade. I might be saying this a little early, but I say it with confidence: Boy was it worth the wait. The basics of this car are simple – it’s all-electric, delivers close to 2,000 horsepower, and has a claimed range of 250 miles on the WLTP scale. That’s not bad. Lotus says it’ll get to 60 mph in under three seconds which isn’t all that radical when you look at other supercars or even the Tesla Model S P100D, but what it does beyond 60 is damn near-mythical and outrageous at the same time.
Lotus Confirms Evija Name For its 1,000-Horsepower Hypercar; What Does the Teaser Video Tell Us?
Lotus’ highly anticipated hypercar is ready to emerge from the shadows. The 1,000-horsepower maniac will be unveiled on July 16 in London. Lotus also plans to hold a sneak peek of the model at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week. But before any of that, we finally have confirmation on what has become a point of intense scrutiny about this model. Finally, the Lotus hypercar codenamed “Type 130” has a name. It’s called the Lotus Evija (“Ee-vi-ya”- meaning "the first in existence” or ’the living one,") and it’s ready to take the hypercar world by storm.
The Lotus Type 130 Electric Hypercar Will Have an Interesting Name; Will Offer More Room than a Ford GT
Lotus’ long-awaited entry into the fast and nutty world of exotic cars is finally taking shape. The first order of business? Finding a name for said exotic. Well, it looks like Lotus can cross that off its list. The model that we know today as the “Type 130” will eventually be called the “Evija.” The name revelation comes by way of Auto Express, which discovered a trademark filed by Lotus earlier this month pertaining to the supposed name. A quick look at the U.K.’s Intellectual Property Office reveals that the Evija trademark covered a number of classes, including “land vehicles, parts and fittings for land vehicles included in Class 12,” “Repair and maintenance of vehicles, custom built construction of vehicles” (Class 37), and “Engineering services, vehicle, and engine design services” (Class 42). If that doesn’t scream like a trademark for a future vehicle, I don’t know what does. Group Lotus Limited filed the trademark on June 18, 2019.
Lotus Flexes its Chinese Backing With a New Hypercar
Lotus made its presence felt at Auto Shanghai 2019 in the cheekiest of ways, revealing a teaser sketch of the Type 130, the automaker’s first-ever fully electric hypercar. You would have thought that Lotus would drop a bombshell in Shanghai by revealing the actual Type 130, but the British automaker is saving that for a rainy day. The actual date of the Type 130’s unveiling has yet to be finalized, but Lotus has indicated that it will take place in London “later this year.” It seems like a waste of a good auto show reveal, but we trust that Lotus has something special planned for the début of its first-ever hypercar. Expect that debut to be a spectacle, not only because of the Type 130’s stature as an EV hypercar but, just as important, its place as the first all-new Lotus model since 2008.
The new Lotus Hypercar will be Built in Partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering
Strategic alliance is the best way to go forward these days. We recently heard about Ford and Volkswagen collaborating, and this time, it is Lotus and Williams Advanced Engineering. The two companies will work hand-in-hand to share “research and development into advanced propulsion technologies.” The newly-wed companies have not provided any details on their forthcoming projects yet, but rumors suggest they could be working on the upcoming Lotus all-electric hypercar.

Geely is one of China’s automotive giants, an industrial colossus that owns Volvo, Proton, Lynk & Co, the London Taxi Company and as of 2017 sports car manufacturer Lotus, as well. Its most recent acquisition was made with the intent to turn it into one of the world’s leading maker of sports cars, to rival the likes of Porsche, maybe even Aston Martin and McLaren.
Hennessey Thinks 311 MPH is Possible With New F5 Venom
Hennessey claims that a prototype version of the Venom F5 is ready to begin testing sometime in 2019 with the goal of hitting 311 mph. Notice that Hennessey is overshooting the unicorn speed of 300 mph? That’s because the company believes that the F5 is capable of going well beyond the threshold number. Once the prototype version of the Venom F5 is ready to test its worth in the heavily anticipated top speed wars, we’ll know for sure if it can back up the hype surrounding its 1,600-horsepower bullet.
Lotus will Lend a Hand in Developing Upcoming Mercedes Hypercar
AMG’s plan to build a Formula One-inspired hypercar is apparently going to come with some tuning assistance from Lotus. The exact details of Lotus’ involvement wasn’t made clear, but a source has told Autocar that the British automaker’s participation in the high-profile project will largely revolve around establishing a chassis setup that will make the hypercar, codenamed the R50, well suited for driving in road conditions.
Keep in mind that if Lotus really is involved in the project, it reportedly isn’t the first time that the two automakers have broken tech bread together. The same source indicated that Lotus has already been involved in the chassis tuning of another recent Mercedes performance model, which likely points to the just-unveiled AMG GT R.
The involvement of Lotus is critical in the overall makeup of the R50 as the British automaker is largely regarded as one of the best in the business in creating some of the best handling cars in the world. Granted, it hasn’t been involved in a project as high-stakes as the one Mercedes is developing, but it does have the support of the German automaker’s own team of engineers and developers, who themselves are no slouches when it comes to developing high-performance machines.
As for the car itself, it is believed to already be in the early stages of physical development. The body itself will be built using a carbon fiber monocoque similar to the one Mercedes is using on its WO7 Formula One race car. Likewise, the F1 influence doesn’t end there as certain hardware and software systems will also be used on the R50. What’s unclear at this point is the specific details regarding the car’s powertrain. The German automaker has made no announcements pertaining to any details about the car, but a previous report from Top Gear indicated that Mercedes is considering a hybrid powertrain made up of a three electric motors and a heavily modified version of the current engine being used on the W07 racer.
No timetable has been set on when the R50 is going to make its debut, although there’s strong sentiment that Mercedes is preparing the car specifically as a special project to commemorate AMG’s 50th anniversary in 2017.

The Bugatti Veyron may still be the world’s fastest production car according to the Guinness Book of World Records, but, official recognition aside, the French supercar is no match for the Hennessey Venom GT. As you might recall, John Hennessey’s amazing hypercar bested the Veyron’s record by nearly three mph at the Kennedy Space Center back in February 2014. Unfortunately, Guinness did not recognize the record because NASA only allowed one run, and the record book requires two runs to confirm the average top speed. More than one year has passed since then and Hennessey has decided it’s time to sell the car that hit 270.49 mph on NASA’s landing strip in Florida.
Interested? Well, all you need is $1.4 million to take it home.
For that amount, you get a supercar loosely based on the Lotus Exige and packed with an array of parts designed by the folks over at Hennessey Performance. Power comes from a GM-sourced, 7.0-liter V-8 strapped to a pair of turbochargers. The combo cranks out a whopping 1,244 horsepower and 1,115 pound-feet of torque, which translates to amazing performance figures. Besides the record-setting 270.49-mph top speed, this Venom GT can also hit 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and 186 mph in 13.63, a Guinness World Record. The Texas-built hypercar will take you from 0 to 200 mph in 14.51 seconds and to 253 mph in a standing mile.

Lotus’ on-again, off-again stance on the production of the since stalled Esprit V8 supercar has seen its fair share of fence-jumping.
But recently, a high-ranking Lotus executive brought new life to the Esprit V8, even if he stopped short of confirming that the company was going to build it.
Speaking to Motoring Australia during the recent launch of the 2014 Exige S Roadster, Lotus brand manager for Australia and New Zealand, Alastair Manihera, hinted that the company hasn’t completely abandoned the Esprit V8, or at least not to the extent that has been reported in the past.
"Contrary to popular belief the factory is keeping its options open," Manihera said, before adding that no timetable has been set on when or where the super car is going to be built.
While that’s far from a confirmation, Manihera did leave out the possibility of Lotus eventually building the supercar and that’s more than you can ask for given the spate of ever-changing directions the company has been having in the past few years.
What we do know is that there’s interest, both within Lotus and fans of the Esprit to see the supercar return for the first time since 2004. It’s no secret that the Esprit, specifically the concept version that was shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, has a future in the industry as a car that could be a nice alternative to more high-priced models out there.
So even if there’s still no commitment coming from Lotus regarding the fate of the Esprite V8, the mere fact that one executive is still optimistic about its chances is good enough for us to keep hoping and praying that the concept that wowed us in Paris back in 2010 will finally get to strut its stuff on the road.

A few days ago, Hennessey announced that its Venom GT supercar scored another impressive record by accelerating to 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 13.63 seconds. Today, the tuner has unveiled the video as a statement for their previous announcement.
After all, this result shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone considering the impressive specifications of the Venom GT. It is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V-8 engine, same used in the Corvette ZR1 that delivers up to 1,200 horsepower, depending on the trim level. With a curb weight of 2,685 pounds, the 1,200-horsepower Venom GT will hit a top speed of 275 mph and will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds. As expected, such an impressive performance will set you back a nice sum — $950,000.

Last month, we reported that Lotus’ future was safe and that we may see a new Esprit on the roads. Today, British magazine, AutoCar, is offering a few more details on the rumored British supercar, including some insight on its powertrain.
AutoCar is reporting that the Esprit’s production is effectively complete, but there are still some lingering problems. Those problems are that Lotus is camshaft-deep in legal battles and unpaid bills, and lacks consistent management.
Rumor has it that if — and we stress if — the Esprit hits production, it will feature a 5.0-liter gasoline engine that works in unison with an F1-style KERS system. So what’s so great about that? Well, that will be good for a whopping 650 ponies beneath the Esprit’s sexy hood — 20 horsepower more than the initial rumors.
These 650 ponies are all well and good, but if it’s priced like the 918 Spyder, only a select few may actually be able to afford one. Lotus has your back there too, as Autocar is also putting out there that the Esprit will be closer to the price of a top-line 911, which is roughly £100,000 — around $160,000 at the current exchange rates.
Not only are we anxious to hear that Lotus still has some fight left in it, but we are also ecstatic to hear that the Esprit may return in impressive form and at a relative bargain. Stay tuned!
