The Ghibli gets a V-8 engine for the first time

LISTEN 02:55

Maserati didn’t slap the Trofeo badge just on the Quattroporte. No, sir. Its smaller sedan also gets to wear it, along with the same V-8 that equips the Levante Trofeo and the said Quattroporte Trofeo.

The Ghibli Trofeo and the Quattroporte Trofeo are now the fastest sedans ever made by Maserati. We’ve already discussed the Quattroporte Trofeo, so let’s focus on the similarly-specced Ghibli, shall we?

A V-8 inside the Maserati Ghibli? You’ve got my attention…

Take a quick look at Maserati’s U.S. website and you’ll see that the engine choice for the Ghibli is pretty straightforward, as in all you get is a 3-liter V-6 tuned to produce either 345 horsepower or 424 horsepower.

The engine is twinnable with either RWD or AWD, while the range is split between three trims: Ghibli, Ghibli S, and Ghibli S Q4 (the quickest of the bunch if we ignore the Trofeo).

The Trofeo, however, changes that, with its V-8. A twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V-8 that cranks out 580 horsepower at 6750 rpm and 538 pound-feet (730 Newton-meters) of torque between 2250 and 5250 rpm. And as you very well know, the engine is built by Ferrari in Maranello according to Maserati’s specifications.

0-100 kph (0-62 mph) takes 4.3 seconds (0.2 seconds quicker than the Quattroporte Trofeo) and top speed is a cool 326 kph (202 mph) with the help of a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Just like the Quattroporte, the Trofeo-badged Ghibli gets an extra Corsa (Race) mode, a launch control feature, and a limited-slip rear diff.

Maserati did make a few tweaks inside the Ghibli Trofeo. Here are the most notable ones:

  • New on-board panel display with new graphics
  • Trofeo badges on the seat headrests
  • Full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather upholstery
  • Larger multimedia screen - 10.1 inches instead of 8.4 inches

Availability and price

There’s no word on pricing, though, but expect quite a bump. At the time of writing, the most expensive new Ghibli money could buy in the U.S. was the $79,690 Ghibli S Q4 (fitted with all-wheel drive) and a 3-liter V-6 with 424 horsepower. The Trofeo is likely to command a sticker of at least $80,000, if not higher.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read full bio
