Recently Maserati has brought back some life to their model lineup. The Ghibli is going hybrid, the two-seat sports coupe Alfieri is said to be arriving soon, and the MC20 – Maserati’s first supercar in almost 20 years is already a fact. But there’s more. A test mule has been spotted out testing. Although it’s disguised as an Alfa Romeo Giulia, the proportions are way off. There are also enough hints that there’s a new Maserati hiding under. This means only one thing - the new Maserati GranTurismo is on its way!

Drivetrain & Performance

As the car is still in development, information regarding the powertrain is scarce. However, we have a pretty good idea of what we can expect. The new GranTurismo is said to be inspired by the MC20’s design. With this in mind, we believe they will also have a lot in common, in terms of the powertrain.

The result of this was the Giorgio EVO – a semi-modular platform able to accommodate internal combustion, hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. From this year, Maserati is said to feature electric powertrains on all of its models. They started this with the Ghibli Hybrid and we can expect the same for the 2022 GranTurismo.

There still will be an internal combustion engine, however. Judging by the mule’s long front end, we are expecting either e twin-turbo V-6 or a twin-turbo V-8. Although the GranTurismo has always been a V-8 car, the use of a de-tuned version of the MC20 V-6 might be more probable, as Maserati prides itself on building the engine from the ground up and blessing it with F1 technology. Regardless, we are still expecting the new GranTurismo to have a power output of well-over 500 horsepower (373 kW), but it may vary on what version you go for.

Cars like the S-Class Coupe and Bentley Continental GT already have well over 600 horsepower in their top versions, so Maserati might give the GranTurismo the full 630-horsepower figure, like in the MC20.

All future Maserati models will offer electric power, starting with the new GranTurismo. This will include EV variants too. Maserati's electric powertrain, branded Folgore, Italian for “lightning”, will consist of a three-motor system with one motor up front and two at the rear.

How is the new GranTurismo going to look?

At this point, we don’t know. We do know that the design will be influenced by the MC20 supercar, but there are no real-life images, to confirm that. We do know of some renderings, which look like an MC20 with different proportions and some elements from the 2014 Alfieri Concept, which unfortunately was scrapped. A real shame for that one.

So what we see here is, of course, not the GranTurismo in its production body but a mule hidden under the body of an Alfa Romeo Giulia. We know that it will have a long front end, just like a typical front-engine, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer. The Giulia body has four doors, yes, but that does not mean the GranTurismo will be a four-door coupe. That said, at some point, this may also happen, just like with the BMW 2,4,6, and 8-Series, which eventually received a four-door coupe variant.

Using mules that look nothing like the actual car will make it possible for the testers to perform tests on the various aspects of a car, without giving the looks of the production car away. Just like the Ferrari Purosangue prototypes that are hidden under the body of a chopped-up Maserati Levante, this mule does a good job at keeping the production design a secret.

Conclusion

The Maserati GranTurismo will finally have a long-awaited successor. The current model is already 14 years old and severely outdated. With the new 2022 model the Modena-based car maker, not only renews the flame of the GranTurismo but also opens a new chapter in the marque’s legacy. With its recent models Maserati has been on the right track and now, their signature GT brings the Trident back in the luxury performance segment. Time will tell if the new platform and electric powertrains will be up to the task.
