Luxury sedan, eh? Why would anyone want a Maserati Quattroporte when the options are as interesting as the 7 Series or the S-Class? Well, it has almost everything you can get from the German guys, but with an Italian flair to it. But does it stand out in the competition? Let’s find out.

Overview

Maserati is well-known for blending luxury and performance and the Quattroporte is no different. It has the brand’s uniqueness with the look and feels while the performance is of course a plus point (thanks Ferrari). If you see the list of the currently selling luxury sedans in the country, you will vastly admire the S-Class, the 7 Series, the A8L, and even the LS 500. All of them are like the sons of modern technology loaded with the luxury you need. So does the Quattroporte stand out? It is quite a tough question to answer as it is a rare breed, to be honest. What we feel is constant to the whole Maserati line-up is how fast they are even if it is just a standard model. Also, if you compare to its arch-enemies, the Quattroporte is quite old. The current generation was introduced back in 2013, yes you heard that right. But thankfully, the brand did stay updated with the use of the latest tech available and of course, the blistering performance on offer just made us look past almost everything. For the 2022 model year, there are quite some changes made throughout the entire Quattroporte lineup. Maserati tried to shrink down the total number of trims to just three, making them distinguishable and dedicated to different driving perspectives. So there’s GT, a more luxury oriented trim, there’s Modena which is the best of both worlds (luxury and performance), and lastly, you know it, the Trofeo. It is a hooligan of a luxury sedan with all the bells and whistles including a beastly 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8. That said, there is some good news for you folks. The MSRP for the base Quattroporte has dropped to $98,400 from $104,890, bringing a lot of opportunities for the Italian brand on American soil. Also, adaptive cruise control has been made standard throughout the trims.

Trims and Features

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 Quattroporte lineup has been changed and now there are only three trims: GT, Modena, and Trofeo, instead of six from the outgoing model year. The GT and the Modena have the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, but the latter is the more powerful one among the two. Also, the Modena is the only trim to feature an all-wheel drive i.e, Modena Q4. The top-of-the-line Trofeo is a strictly enthusiast’s car and is pretty much overkill for the general public like most of us. It sports a Ferrari-derived 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces over 500 ponies, insane we know. That said, here is the full list of trims and features for your reference.

Exterior: Sleek and sharp, you guessed it right

Yes, the Quattroporte has been the same, mostly, since its current generation which was launched nine years ago. But it has its unique touches and is nowhere close to being called outdated for its design. We mean, yes, the headlights could use modern LEDs but nothing to complain about. It is a true Maserati and is admired by both amateurs and enthusiasts. From the outside, the Quattroporte looks stunning and is similar to the Ghibli in many ways but the dimensions. The front has the Maserati’s signature grille that is wide to pass more air under the heavily creased hood. The headlight design gives the front fascia an angry look. Also, they are all LEDs, and thanks to Maserati, there aren’t many fakeries going on with the side vents like that of its German competitors.

The sides have the 19-inch alloys fitted as standard and they can go up to 21 inches with the range-topping Trofeo. The broadened wheel arches add up to the overall sportiness of this Italian beast. The LED taillights at the rear look good while the quad-exhaust tips spice up the rear end. As standard, you will get adaptive headlights, a power sunroof, and chrome grille bars. The inclusion of flush door handles would have been nice but it is what it is. A few of the exterior features available with the higher trims are as follows:

- Unique front and rear fascias with a broadened grille. (Modena)

- 21-inch alloys. (Trofeo)

- Performance tires. (Trofeo)

- Performance exhausts. (Trofeo)

- Handsfree tailgate. (Optional)

Let’s discuss the dimensions, shall we? The Quattroporte is nearly similar to the competition when it comes to the exterior dimensions. It has an overall length of 207.2 inches whereas the A8 and the S-Class are about an inch longer. The width and height are 76.7 and 58.3 inches consecutively. The 7 Series and the S-Class have a slightly higher ground clearance compared to the LS 500 and the Quattroporte. However, the latter is the lightest among the elites in its class. It weighs 4,101 pounds in its standard form while the A8 is the heaviest with 4,773 pounds of curb weight, possibly because of its mild-hybrid powertrain. The S-Class and the 7 Series have the longest wheelbase and then comes the Quattroporte with 124.8 inches.

Interior: Let’s invite the elephant into the room

We mean no offense to Maserati and the Quattroporte. To be honest, we love the cabin design, the aesthetics, and all that but it's not perfect. First, let’s appreciate how the cabin looks and feels. We were not blown away or being shocked in awe when we got the chance to hop inside the Quattroporte. Maserati cars are well built and the aesthetics are just top-notch with all the latest and greatest tech. No, we are not kidding. Yes, the cabin is well made with good quality leather, wood and even you can find carbon fiber parts but the tech is a mixed bag. Unlike the popular German cars, you won’t get to see a crazy big display at the center or a fully digital instrument console with support for AR-based navigation. Instead, there is an analog-digital combo as the instrument console and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, as standard. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also has wooden inserts and can be equipped with carbon fiber parts if you would spend more. The most annoying part of the cabin would be the insertion of the cheap buttons and knobs which cannot be ignored. The feedback and the quality made us feel like we were sitting inside a Jeep. Yes, you heard that right. It is not only the Quattroporte but all the other Maseratis including the Levante. This makes the overall experience feel cheap and of course, the price tag is not.

The cabin, at the same time, feels upmarket and comfortable. We loved how Maserati has made the cabin look different with each trim. With the GT trim, its sole purpose is to deliver comfort, and therefore it gets leather seats that are super comfy along with 12-way power-adjustable and heating options. The Modena and the Trofeo get sport seats with even memory settings as an optional addition. The Trofeo gets ventilated front seats along with an Alcantara headliner while the Modena gets sports seats only. As a full-size sedan, and the longer length followed by it, the spaciousness of the cabin is not something you should be worried about. Although the brand did not make the effort to disclose the dimensions, we have tested the Quattroporte thoroughly and can conclude that both the rows are fairly spacious. There’s good headroom and legroom in both rows. Especially in the rear row, thanks to its longer wheelbase, the legroom is ample. We would say that the Quattroporte goes head-to-head with the LC 500 and maybe even better in a few cases. The former also has a slightly better cargo capacity at 18.7 cubic feet while the mighty S-Class has only 12.9 cubic feet (good job Maserati!) If you are lost with the interior features and specs, they are just listed below:

- Four-zone automatic climate control. (Optional)

- Leather-wrapped steering wheel with wooden inserts.

- Heated steering wheel.

- Premium leather upholstery.

- 12-way power-adjustable front seats with power lumbar support.

- Heated front seats.

- Leather and wood trims.

- Carbon-fiber trims on the steering wheel, door panels, center console, and dashboard.

The infotainment system, like other Stellantis-operated cars, is very stable and heavily based on the Android system. It is easier to use and is quite responsive in every manner. By the looks, the iDrive and the MBUX are far ahead of Maserati’s system, especially when it comes to the flagship touches and implementations. So far, the 10.1-inch touchscreen display is nice and responsive. You will get wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration as standard as well as Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. A 10-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system comes as standard but is not as good as the Burmester sound system found with the S-Class. Other infotainment features available with the 2022 Maserati Quattroporte are as follows:

- 1,280-watt Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system.

- Voice assistant.

- SiriusXM.

- Satellite navigation.

- Amazon Alexa.

Performance and Handling: Who says luxury sedans are boring?

When it comes to Maserati, we know that it is the performance that will not go uncompromised. The Quattroporte is no different and the thing with Maserati is that the brand doesn’t have a lot of powertrain choices. So it is either a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 or a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8. The former engine powers both the GT and Modena but the engine is slightly tuned for the Modena hence is a bit more powerful than the GT. In its standard guise, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine puts out 345 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of maximum torque through the rear wheels only via an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The Modena with the tuned V-6 engine produces 424 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. However, the Modena is the only trim to have an optional all-wheel drive setup. The top-of-the-line Trofeo trim gets a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine which is Ferrari-sourced, of course. That beast of an engine puts out a whopping 580 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of maximum torque, driving the rear wheels. The numbers are pretty impressive and if you compare them to the competition, they are nearly similar but not quite the competition-leading ones. The Trofeo has impressive power figures but the S 580 trounces it while being about $30,000 cheaper.

In case you are wondering about the on-road performance, yes, the Quattroporte does a great job. You are looking at a brisk 5.1 seconds to 60 miles per hour and a standing quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds, all done by the GT. The Modena with its tuned V-6 engine does slightly better, we would say: 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and 13.3 seconds to a quarter-mile. The LS 500, being the cheapest among the bunch, performs exactly the same as the Modena. The 750i xDrive, being about $5,000 heavier than the GT, does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. How does the 2022 Quattroporte drive? The floatiness has been reduced, adjoining comfort and driveability to make things engaging for the drivers too. As standard, the Quattroporte comes with adaptive air suspension which constantly changes its travel according to your driving strategies. The steering wheel is sporty and full of feedback. It is lightweight and taking speedy corners is a piece of cake, thanks to the limited-slip differential. We recommend you take a Quattroporte out for a test drive and you will be able to relate majorly. The braking performance is amazing too with good feedback from the pedals. We never felt for a moment that the Quattroporte is a big car because of how fast it came to stop whenever necessary.

Fuel Economy

Big powerful engines sip a little more gas than the usual car engines and that is justifiable. The Quattroporte and the LS 500 are the only options that do not come with mild-hybrid powertrains. This makes them, especially the former, less efficient. So you are looking at an EPA estimated 16/25/19 for city/highway/combined for both the GT and Modena. The Modena Q4 receives a mile less in the highway category and the Trofeo gets a further lower 13/20/16 for city/highway/combined. The cheapest S-Class gets 20/29/24 from the EPA while the BMW 740i gets 22/25/29 for city/highway/combined. Maserati has fitted all the Quattroporte trims with a 19-gallon tank that will deliver about 400 miles combined.

How safe is the 2022 Maserati Quattroporte?

Just like the other competitors, the Quattroporte barely gets tested for crash resistance. But Maserati has loaded its flagship sedan with loads of advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, 360-degree surround-view camera, blindspot monitoring, and parking sensors. Other safety features available with the Quattroporte would be:

- Pedestrian detection.

- Lane-keeping assist.

- Traffic sign recognition.

- Acceleration slip regulation.

- Blindspot intervention.

- Lane-departure warning.

Should you consider the 2022 Maserati Quattroporte?

If you don’t want a mainstream luxury sedan, then the Quattroporte would be a great choice. It has good power and crisp handling dynamics to give you an edge in the competition. Maserati made sure to make the Quattroporte a driver’s car too. Not to forget the interior which is filled with leather, wood, and aluminum. It could have felt a bit more premium if there were no cheap buttons and knobs. The cabin is comfortable and is truly an Italian executive sedan. However, we cannot let you ignore the hard truths about owning a Maserati. Surely it will turn heads but the reliability is questionable. Also, the dealerships are not well-spread throughout the country. If you want a luxury sedan but don’t want to spend six figures then you always have the Lexus LS 500. It starts from $76,000 and you will be happy to get a lot of standard features for the price. Moreover, the reliability of Toyota is something we cannot deny how good it is.
