The Mazda MX-30's rear doors are a cool tribute to the RX-8, but what's the point?

The Mazda MX-30’s rear doors are a cool tribute to the RX-8, but what’s the point?

Where’s the practicality, Mazda?

Mazda just launched its first all-electric vehicle, the MX-30, at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, and it’s quite an exotic crossover in a sea of dull-looking haulers. And that’s mostly because it has tiny, rear-hinged doors like the RX-8, a sports car that Mazda built from 2003 to 2012. Needless to say, it’s a cool feature to have, but it ruins the practicality of the MX-30 and makes me wonder why Mazda went with such a design.

Long Live Mazda's Wankel Rotary Engine!!!

Long Live Mazda’s Wankel Rotary Engine!!!

The Wankel rotary is coming back, but not in the way you expect

It feels like Mazda has been dragging its feet when it comes to entering the electrification market, doesn’t it? I mean, as of now, the company is one of the few stragglers out there that doesn’t have a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle while the competition is already deep in the field, so to speak. All of that is about to change soon. Mazda is set to bring a new EV to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and, to top things off, it’s being boasted as an all-new model that features an all-new platform and design. In other words, it won’t just be a redressed Mazda 3 or Mazda 5 as we see automakers like BMW and Mercedes are doing. But, rumor has it there’s even more icing for this cake – icing that tastes like the Wankel rotary engine of day’s past and, suddenly, we’re excited. Let me tell you more about it.

Best Used 2016 SUV for Fuel Economy

Best Used 2016 SUV for Fuel Economy

Who said these big boys can’t run efficiently?

The market trend is quickly shifting from sedans to crossovers and SUVs. However, SUVs have two major cons when compared to their segment counterparts - high retail price and poor fuel economy. Even though they are a practical choice thanks to additional cabin and cargo space, it’s a little difficult for everyone to afford an SUV. So why not go for a used SUV instead? You don’t take the depreciation hit that first owner does, and since SUVs are built to last a lifetime, you can get an almost-new SUV at half the original price.

Now that we’ve planted this seed in your head, let’s have a look at the best used SUVs from 2016 with high fuel efficiency.

Mazda Confirms the Rebirth of the Rotary Engine but Only as a Range Extender

Mazda Confirms the Rebirth of the Rotary Engine but Only as a Range Extender

Sorry, folks - no new RX sports car just yet

Mazda is finally resuscitating the rotary engine, but not in the way that the fans would have hoped. The Wankel will be used as a range extender for one of Mazda’s upcoming EVs which are part of its ’Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030’ program.

It’s been three years since Mazda unveiled the stunningly-beautiful RX-Vision concept at the Tokyo Auto Show and we’ve been dreaming of a rotary resurgence ever since. Now, finally, it’s going to happen. Mazda will launch its first two EVs soon, the first as early as 2019, and one of them will have a Wankel engine which will act as a range extender. The other new car, however, will be the first true EV built by Mazda.

Mazda in Hot Water Over Mazda6 Fire Risk

Mazda in Hot Water Over Mazda6 Fire Risk

If you happen to own one of the most beautiful mid-size sedans on sale, the new Mazda6, you may want to get to your dealer really quickly. Mazda and the NHTSA are recalling more than 19,000 2014 Mazda6 models for issues with the fuel system.

Now what happens is actually little awkward, but apparently you can put too much gas inside the tank. The back pressure that should build up to shut off the pump doesn’t do so at a low enough volume. Sure, you could accidentally spill some fuel and ruin your new shoes, but the real concern is a much different issue.

Image you fill up your car on a nice, crisp spring morning, and the temperature is a brisk 45 degrees. If you have that tank too full and the temp gets hot outside, all that fuel will begin to expand. According to the NHTSA, that fuel could find its way into the charcoal canister which is a part used for improved emissions. Yes, that means fuel is going near the exhaust system. Last time I checked, hot metal and gasoline was a pretty reliable recipe for making fire.

All it takes to fix is a quick adapter in the tank shut-off valve, and it shouldn’t take very long to fix. Just make sure you get into your Mazda dealer to have it done. You don’t want your car to burst into flames because you were too lazy to see a dealer, do you?

2013 Mazda3 Skyactiv-CNG Concept

2013 Mazda3 Skyactiv-CNG Concept

The attention of the U.S. auto market is focused squarely on the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, but the folks in Japan are more interested in what’s going on at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show set to open its gates on November 21st.

Japan-based Mazda is also turning its focus to its home country with an impressive lineup for the Tokyo show, with one of the vehicles being a concept version based on the new Mazda3. This Mazda3 concept will offer an all-new engine that is bound to get all those looking to rid themselves of fossil fuels amped up for the show.

Mazda has decided to offer this new Mazda3 concept with a CNG-powered engine. This isn’t too much of a surprise, considering the increasing demand for CNG-powered vehicles — or anything other than gasoline, for that matter.

The new CNG Concept features a dual-fuel system that runs on either gasoline or CNG, making refilling the tank as convenient as possible. This new system allows the concept to reduce emission by about 20 percent. If natural gas prices are near the same $2.06 per gallon that they are here, then it will like save some bucks (Yen) at the pumps too.

Alongside the new CNG Concept Mazda will display a few other concepts based on the new Mazda6.
