It’s Official: The 2019 Mazda CX-5 Diesel in On Sale In America
Mazda has officially confirmed that it will start selling its first modern diesel in the U.S., and it will come under the hood of its CX-5 crossover. This, all while the manufacturers that have always been very pro-diesel, the Europeans, are now shunning compression-ignition engines and looking for alternatives.

The sleek 2019 Mazda CX-9 SUV is one of the least-obvious rivals of the 2020 sixth-generation Explorer. The two models share nothing in terms of exterior design, and this affects the cabin as well. The Mazda is also only available with only one engine and one transmission, and you can only get it with either FWD or AWD. There’re a lot of options if you’re in the market for a three-row SUV and Ford should take into consideration all of its rivals if it wants to keep topping the sales charts with the latest Explorer. Sure, the Mazda CX-9 isn’t for the same kind of person as the Ford but, size wise, they play ball in the same league so here’s how the two stack up against one another.
Mazda Enters the Modern Ages by Offering Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Unlike most automakers, Mazda is one of the few companies that have yet to offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That’s about to change, though, because the Japanese car brand is finally relenting. Beginning with the 2018 Mazda 6 that will hit dealerships this summer, Mazda will finally offer either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In the case of the 6, all trims except for the base Sport model will carry the apps as standard equipment.

New Mazda6 Tourer Heading To The Geneva Auto Show!
Mazda just introduced the refreshed Mazda6 sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, and with its unveiling, the brand also dropped a long list of updates and upgrades. Long story short, we like what we see. In fact, we like it so much, we decided to give it a spot on our Best In Show list. Now, Mazda is giving us a look at the refreshed wagon Tourer model, which is headed to this year’s Geneva Motor Show sporting several of the sedan’s various updates.

NHTSA Briefly - And Mistakenly - Lists Mazda6 as an AWD Model
One of the biggest disappointments surrounding the new U.S.-spec Mazda was the absence of an all-wheel-drive system. To make matters worse, our hopes were raised when the NHTSA created two listings for the 2018 Mazda6 on its website, one that came with the standard front-wheel-drive and another with all-wheel drive. Turns out, it was nothing but a mistake by the agency because clicking the link to the Mazda6 AWD now reveals an "error message."
First arriving in North America for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Mazda 626, the Mazda6 was billed as the Japanese brand’s premium midsize four-door offering. Hailed as Mazda’s flagship sedan model, the nameplate has seen three generations throughout its career, with the most recent getting a debut at the Moscow International Motor Show in August of 2012. Now, it’s time for a refresh, with Mazda dropping details on the 2018 model year at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. The updates this time around are extensive, and include a more upscale interior, improved chassis refinement, and most importantly, the addition of a turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood.
All told, the 2018 Mazda6 gets a rather impressive list of revisions, much more than we’re accustomed to seeing in a simple mid-cycle refresh. And that’s great, especially when you consider how impressed we were with the older model. By all accounts, it looks like Mazda is vying to instill the 6 with a sense of elevated quality and luxury, leveling its crosshairs at more expensive competitors in the segment. At the same time, that requisite Mazda fun gets a boost thanks to forced induction. So then, what’s the end result? Read on to find out.

A Quick Look at how the Mazda6 Has Changed for 2018
Sometimes, in the smallest of updates can make a big difference for a car. The new Mazda6 is proof of that. It still looks like the same attractive sedan, but take a closer look at it, and you’ll notice a few subtle tweaks that give the sedan a more refined appearance. Part of the changes is tied to Mazda’s “Mature Elegance” styling, a design language that the automaker first unveiled in its Vision Coupe concept. The new Mazda6 receives some hints of the new aesthetic architecture. That’s on top of the car also receiving a more powerful turbocharged engine. It’s a new day for the new-and-improved Mazda6.
2018 Mazda CX-8
In a world where SUVs have pretty much taken over the automotive market, Mazda is actually coming up quite short with its offerings, thanks to its current lineup featuring no more than the CX-3, CX-5, and CX-9. Over in Japan, Mazda’s home market, the offerings are even smaller with just the CX-3 and CX-5 making up the only options available to drive in SUV segment. Well, that latter fact is about to change, as Mazda has now introduced the Mazda CX-8. Essentially a slightly smaller CX-9 (we’re talking about inches here, folks) the CX-8 is designed specifically for the Japanese market, giving it something special from the brand that it helped produce so long ago. It takes on the same styling DNA as it’s taller, foreign sibling, while the power to go is derived from the 2.2-liter Diesel that Mazda has been using since 2012, but upgraded to deliver 140 kW or 187.74 horsepower or about 11 horsepower more than pre-2017 models.
Now, the CX-8 is being billed as an SUV that brings new style and depth to the KODO design language, with new “one of a kind” SUV styling. Well, go ahead and take a deep breath and sit down, because you just been taken for a long, hard ride. Mazda is about as bad as the German three when it comes to tooting its own horn, and the CX-8 is the proof. For the most part, the CX-8 is identical to the CX-9 that we have here in the states. The only real difference is the car’s size, which combines a drop in length of 6.49 inches with a drop in width of 4.76 inches, and a drop in height of just 0.89 inches. But, maybe it isn’t all the same as the CX-9 that you can find here in the States, so let’s take a better look at it to see what all Mazda is working with. Either way, it’s certain to be a plus for the Japanese market – those folks have been needed something larger than that CX-5 for a long time.

2016 - 2017 Mazda6
Introduced in early 2002, the Mazda6 traces its roots back to 1987, when the 626 was enlarged from a compact to a midsize sedan. Although sporty and somewhat luxurious, the first-generation Mazda6 wasn’t the gorgeous sedan we’re all familiar with today. It took Mazda about 10 years to refine the sedan, which entered a new era in 2012, when the third-generation model rolled out. Designed around the company’s KODO-Soul of Motion styling language, the Mazda6 arrived on U.S. soil with a 2.5-liter, Skyactiv-G unit under its hood, one of three engines offered with the sedan. Unveiled at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, the U.S.-spec Mazda6 received its first facelift exactly two years later, during the same event.
Although it continues with the same 2.5-liter, the revised Mazda6 boasts a bolder front fascia with new headlamps and an updated interior with a new dashboard and better fit and finish. Read on to find out more about the changes that will keep this sedan fresh for a couple more years.

One characteristic that defines a great racing driver is consistency: clipping off the same time lap after lap is a catalyst for development. The same is true for a good racing car. You want a machine that will give you the same performance every time you put it on the track. At best, an unpredictable car is slow. At worst- well, you get the idea.
Given all that, it looks as though the Mazda6 has a bright future ahead of it. Recently, three of the sleek sedans were able to crush over 20 records in a brutal, 24-hour-long top-speed run at the ATP test oval in Papenburg, Germany. The run was a measure of the car’s ability to maintain the highest possible average speed over a given time period, and in a challenge like this, if something can go wrong, it almost certainly will.
Thankfully for the Mazda team, the 6 held strong. Gunning to topple the record for diesel-powered production cars in the 2.0- to 2.5-liter displacement range, each sedan was powered by a 173 horsepower, 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D clean-diesel motor running at a very low 14-to-1 compression ratio. The engine propelled the lead car to trounce the old record of 130.38 mph with a average of 137.37 mph. Not bad for a diesel.
Behind the wheel was a potpourri of professionals, journalists, and enthusiasts, each taking the helm for a 1.5-hour stint on track. A little over half a mph separated the three Mazdas, which is a testament to the consistency of both the drivers and the cars.

If you happen to own one of the most beautiful mid-size sedans on sale, the new Mazda6, you may want to get to your dealer really quickly. Mazda and the NHTSA are recalling more than 19,000 2014 Mazda6 models for issues with the fuel system.
Now what happens is actually little awkward, but apparently you can put too much gas inside the tank. The back pressure that should build up to shut off the pump doesn’t do so at a low enough volume. Sure, you could accidentally spill some fuel and ruin your new shoes, but the real concern is a much different issue.
Image you fill up your car on a nice, crisp spring morning, and the temperature is a brisk 45 degrees. If you have that tank too full and the temp gets hot outside, all that fuel will begin to expand. According to the NHTSA, that fuel could find its way into the charcoal canister which is a part used for improved emissions. Yes, that means fuel is going near the exhaust system. Last time I checked, hot metal and gasoline was a pretty reliable recipe for making fire.
All it takes to fix is a quick adapter in the tank shut-off valve, and it shouldn’t take very long to fix. Just make sure you get into your Mazda dealer to have it done. You don’t want your car to burst into flames because you were too lazy to see a dealer, do you?

Diesel-powered cars are gaining ground in the United States lately with both Volkswagen and Audi introducing new models into the market. Mazda is looking to join the fray of consumer diesel model with its Mazda6 sedan.
If the idea of parking an oil-burning "zoom zoom" sedan in your garage sounds great you need to put on your hat of patience. Mazda has just announced that the Skyactiv-D equipped Mazda6 has been delayed.
The car has not been delayed due to emissions testing, rather Mazda feels the car doesn’t have quite the right driving dynamic. In its own words words the diesel Mazda6 needs to be tweaked to provide "the right balance between fuel-economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance."
While it makes us a little sad that Mazda has delayed the introduction of this engine to the US market again, we can’t help but appreciate the desire to deliver the best-driving product they can.
With how much the gasoline-powered 2014 Mazda6 impressed us, it’s no surprise that Mazda is refusing to deliver a sub-par product.

When Mazda replaced the 626 — some considered it a simple rename — with the Mazda6 in 2003, its lineup started to regain its long-forgotten sporty feel. As time went on, even after its 2009 redesign, the Mazda6 became a little stagnant and buyers started looking elsewhere for their sports sedans.
Well, Mazda is currently in full redesign mode with its all-new Kodo design language in an attempt to regain some buyer interest. The first of its sedans to get the Kodo treatment was the 2014 Mazda6, and boy did it completely change the outlook for Mazda’s flagship sedan.
We all know that there is no better way to get to know a car better than by taking out for a spin yourself. And it’s even better if you get the car for an extended period of time. Well, that’s just what I did, as Mazda dropped off a shiny, new Mazda6 i Touring and gave me a week to get to know it a little better.
In all honesty, I was pretty skeptical at first, but I am now a believer that Mazda is back and better than ever. Not to say there were zero flaws, but I found many more pros than cons.
