Back in May, Mazda announced plans to break another world record with the largest parade of Mazda cars. Well, it’s now official, as Mazda entered the Guinness Book of World Records on June 15th with a total of 693 MX-5s joining the parade.
There were a total of 1,450 participants who contributed to the record attempt, shattering the existing record for the "largest parade of Mazda cars," which put together a total of 459 MX-5s back in 2010.
The parade was led by a third-generation racing model driven by Dutch TV presenter, Allard Kalff, and President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe, Jeff Guyton, beside him. The official certificate was offered by Guinness World Records adjudicator, Pravin Patel.
The entire event took place at the RDW Test Centre at Lelystad and featured demonstrations by the Ribank Mazda MaX5 Cup racers and the three-rotor-engine-powered Mazda3. Participants at the event had the opportunity to test Mazda’s new i-ACTIVSENSE and the new Mazda SKYACTIV models.
At the end of the day, participants were offered a reward for the most beautiful and authentic MX-5. This award went to Pieter Staat from Meteren (NL).

Mazda plans to enter the Guinness World Record Book one more time, as the company plans to organize the largest parade of Mazda cars on June 15, 2013. The event is called "IMAX-5 2013" and plans to smash the current record, which brought together a total of 459 MX-5 roadsters.
Mazda hopes to bring together a total of 800 MX-5s following a 15 km (9.32-mile) path through the fascinating Dutch polder landscape near Lelystad, Netherlands. Participants will be entertained with a series of other activities, like the opportunity to test drive Mazda’s new SKYACTIV models or test their driving skills on different race simulators. The event will end at Europe’s largest drive-in cinema.
Customers interested in participating in the event need to register online at www.imax-5.nl. The €30 ($39) admission per car (up to two people) includes a meal and two drinks per person.

At the beginning of 2013, Mazda and Alfa Romeo signed an agreement that will bring a new roadster to each company: a new MX-5 for the Japanese company and a new Spider for the Italian one. Both models will be built at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant starting 2015, but each model will offer its own engines.
Until now, it has been rumored that the MX-5 would use a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine that features SkyActiv technology. However, new details suggest that the tiny roadster could also get a diesel engine. you read that right; we said diesel…
However, because a diesel roadster could be a tough sell to traditionalists, Mazda will still offer a gasoline alternative. Rumors suggest that this diesel engine will be a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter SkyActiv engine that produces approximately 130 horsepower. This would give the Miata its lowest horsepower output since it bumped the standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder to 133 horsepower in 1996.
As for the Spider version, it could be offered with a turbocharged 1.4-liter ‘TB’ engine with power ranging from 120 horsepower in the base model to 296 horsepower for the top versions. Both models will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Mazda will focus on offering modern materials and design techniques that could help keep the total weight down to about 1,760 pounds.

The Mazda MX-5 is already a fine piece of machinery. It is balanced, nimble and is capable of making for quick laps on the most twisty of track. While the MX-5 is fun to drive, one thing that nobody will say is that it is powerful.
Flyin’ Miata, a top MX-5 Miata tuner, decided to change all of this with their Habu conversion kit. The Habu upgrade works on any 1990-2009 MX-5 with a big difference under the hood. They swap out the small four-cylinder engine for a fire breathing V-8.
If this sounds familiar it is because Carroll Shelby made it popular by putting a large V-8 engine into the small AC Ace. The result of this was the Shelby Cobra, a small roadster capable of scary performance back in the ’60s.
With an eight-cylinder engine in the small Japanese roadster, you get a high-powered performance car that can keep up with many of the high-priced supercars built today for a fraction of the cost.
The performance comes dangerously close to the 2014 SRT Viper and it is because of this swipe at the Viper that the kit is called the Habu, which is Japanese for a small venomous snake.

Mazda UK is adding four new special editions to its lineup, one of them being a MX-5 Venture Edition. The new special edition is on sale now with prices starting £18,895 (about $28,800 at the current exchange rates) for the 126-horsepower, 1.8-liter-powered Venture Edition soft-top version and up to £22,295 (about $34,000 at the current exchange rates) for the 160-horsepower, 2.0-liter-powered Venture Edition Roadster Coupe with powered folding roof.
The new MX-5 Venture Edition will be distinguished by a new set of 17-inch Bright Finish alloy wheels on the outside. On the inside, Mazda is offering heated tan leather sports seats and tan leather door inserts.
The new Venture Edition will be offered in four exterior colors: Brilliant Black, Copper Red Mica, Meteor Grey Mica and Stormy Blue Mica. Each color will be combined with a set of “Venture Edition" badges, while the soft-top models will be offered with a tan fabric roof.
For nearly six month now, there have been rumors that Mazda and Alfa Romeo were working on a deal that would have the next-gen MX-5 Miata and the upcoming Alfa Romeo roadster share a platform. Well, the ink has now reached the signature line on an official agreement between the two to co-develop a two-seat roadster. Both models will be built at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant starting 2015.
Both models will be offered in a rear-wheel-drive configuration, but each one will feature engines developed in-house. The next MX-5 for example is rumored to be powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged unit featuring SkyActiv technology, while the next Alfa Romeo Spyder is rumored to be powered by a turbocharged 1750 cc engine capable of developing an impressive 296 horsepower. Other rumors suggest a 1.4TB engine with an output of 168 horsepower.
While we know for sure that the next Mazda will keep the usual MX-5 nomenclature, for Alfa Romeo things aren’t very sure at this point, but it has been rumored that the company plans to bring back the legendary Spyder name.
The SEMA Auto Show is a time for tuning companies to show what they are made of and this year’s event will be anything but boring. We’ve already seen a few of the vehicles that will be headed to Las Vegas this year, but we’ve gotten word of another vehicle scheduled to appear: the Catfish Speedster developed by Bauer Limited Production.
The Catfish is based on a Mazda MX-5 Miata, but shares none of its components. All of the Mazda’s original parts have been replaced by new ones, including a new hood, trunk, doors, bumpers, and a top and convertible frame. The interior was slightly modified to make it possible for the driver to put in stock Miata seats or racing seats of their choice.
The Catfish Speedster will be offered with a standard 1.6 engine or a 1.8 NB Rotrex with over 260hp, but for customers who want a little more push, Bauer will also be offering an LS2 V8 engine. With the Speedster coming in at only 1,500lbs, we can only imagine its performance figures.
The official debut of the new Catfish Speedster will be at the 2012 SEMA Show, with a racing version set to be unveiled in 2013.
We already know that Mazda and Alfa Romeo are in bed together on the MX-5 Miata/Alfa Romeo Spider project, but the specifics were still a relative unknown. A little bird, in the form of a senior design source, flew down and chirped a little info to our friends at What Car. We cannot vouch for the validity of this info, but we’re going to pass it on to you.
First up, the engine... According to this unnamed source, Mazda has chosen an engine already and it is a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It pumps out a healthy 200 horsepower, which is 22 horsepower more than the 2004 and 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 produced and 33 horsepower more than the current model. We’re also certain that we’ll see torque cresting the 200 pound-feet mark, though there was no mention of that.
The source also reports that the MX-5 will hit showrooms in 2015 with a lighter body and chassis, and a sportier look than the current model. The estimated weight the source gave was 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs), which is 276 lbs less than the 2012 model. In a car as small as the Miata, that is significant weight loss, to say the least.
There is also talk that Mazda will offer its roadster up with many more options that will help give the car more of a personality. This will help form a stronger bond between the person and the car. Typically, Miata owners already have this bond with their car, but a little extra something can’t hurt.
Lastly, there will be a top-end model, similar to the Mazdaspeed version in 2004 and 2005, that will be even lighter yet and more tuned for racing, as it will be stripped of unnecessary add-on features to save every ounce.
There was one bit of info on the project altogether and it is that Mazda will only provide the platform (chassis, uni-body, and drivetrain); Alfa Romeo will add on its own body and interior. So scratch the evil idea that we’ll have two almost identical cars.

There are some videos that are flat-out awesome and there are others that you can’t help but watch and just say “dayum, that was sick!” The above video just so happens to be a card-carrying member of the latter group. As a fellow Miata owner, I am slightly biased here...
This dude not only dropped an RB26 engine from a Skyline into his second-gen Miata, but he also pulled off one of the most bad-ass saves we have ever witnessed. This Miata launches from the starting tree and all is well, as it pulls away from its competitor until suddenly the back end of the Miata starts wagging its 900-horsepower tail all over the track.
The quick-acting driver manages to pull the reigns on this wild ride and get her going straight again. After all of that the Miata still crossed the finish line in just 16 seconds, which is faster than the majority of the cars on the road today.
The video ends with the guy operating the camera catching up to the slick driver and asking him what happened. It turns out that the car overheated and popped a freeze plug, which caused the coolant to spill all over the track. When you mix any liquid, especially coolant, with slick tires and 900 ponies, you are definitely in for just a little bit of tail action...
Hats off to the driver for keeping calm and not smashing his likely expensive Miata into the wall.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is already undergoing a complete overhaul to enter its new generation, but the company has apparently realized the dire need for the Miata to be refreshed before it becomes completely obsolete ahead of the new generation’s debut.
Launched in 2005, the third generation MX-5 (NC) received its first major update in 2008. It’s barely been touched since then, but 2013 will come with a second round of updates before the car gets canned for the new generation. The new MX-5 (known as the Roadster in Japan) has already made its officially debut and is already on sale at all Mazda dealerships throughout Japan.
The exterior has been redesigned to offer a more aggressive look, while the interior has received a new luxury tan color finish for the genuine leather seats. The model has also received revised characteristics of the throttle and brake booster that help improve control of the accelerator in the manual transmission models and the brakes in all models.

Despite having more special edition versions than any model in recent history, the Mazda MX-5’s popularity doesn’t appear to be waning any time soon.
Over in the UK, the Japanese sports roadster is still a hot ticket, so much so in fact that Mazda has decided to give the UK market yet another special edition model of the MX-5.
Say hello to the MX-5 Kuro Special Edition.
Available in two variants - one for the soft-top and one for the folding hard top - the MX-5 Kuro Special Edition distinguishes itself from the rest of its MX-5 peers with a host of aesthetic alterations, including a race car-inspired exterior graphics, black detailing around the front grille and front fog lights, ‘Kuro Edition’ badging all over the exterior, and a new set of 17" alloy wheels. The special edition model also gets a new rear sports bumper, a larger sports exhaust, and a choice of three different color options: Velocity Red Mica, Crystal White Pearlescent, and Brilliant Black.
Inside, the MX-5 Kuro Special Edition gets treated to Stone and Black heated leather seats, Stone leather door inserts, red stitching, a silver interior panel with red accents, alloy pedals, and floor mats with a race-inspired logo.
The soft-top variant of the Kuro Special Edition will come with a 1.8 liter engine that nets 126 horsepower and 123 lb/ft of torque while the hard-top model will be powered by a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that produces 167 horsepower and 158 lb/ft of torque.
200 units of the soft-top model will be available in the UK at a price of £18,495 ($28,890), while 400 of the hard-top variant will be available at a price of £21,995 ($34,350).
Mazda will be attending the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a very cool Mazda MX-5 GT Concept which may head to production depending on customers’ reactions at the festival. The concept was developed by Jota Sport and looks a lot like the MX-5 Super20 unveiled last year at the SEMA Auto Show.
The GT Concept is powered by a normally aspirated 2.0-litre Mazda petrol engine that delivers a total of 205 HP and is mated to a standard manual gearbox. Mazda is also offering an updated suspension, as well as an impressive aerodynamic package that includes a carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser, and a boot spoiler. The final piece of the exterior is a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe.
For the interior, the concept gets Recaro seats and plenty of carbon fiber to suits any sports car enthusiast. Road slicks and body-colored roll hoops behind the seats were also added for customers who want to run the car on the race track.
"This year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed we have a number of significant cars on the stand and contesting the hillclimb," said Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK. "The MX-5 has been our best known car for 22 years and with the GT4 and GT Concept on show, we are demonstrating that this car can compete with the more expensive race and performance cars but still remain true to its roots of affordable motoring with a strong focus on the driving experience."
