Mazda is the latest entrant in the EV segment. The company has finally launched its first electric crossover in the form of an urban crossover. Moniker’d the MX-30, Mazda revealed the product at its home turf at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show. From the initial impressions, the MX-30 looks like a mixed bag. We’ll hold our verdict till Mazda releases all the details about the MX-30. The Tokyo Auto Show was lukewarm at best and it was the perfect time to launch the crossover with pomp and fare and garner all the attention. But, Mazda has still not revealed everything about it. Missed opportunity? I think yes.
Mazda Debuts Updated CX-8 at Tokyo Motor Show; Still Not Coming to the U.S.
It’s been only two years since it introduced the CX-8 crossover and Mazda already unveiled an updated version at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. As before, the CX-8, essentially a seven-seat version of the CX-5, remains limited to markets like Japan, Malaysia, China, Australia, and New Zealand and won’t come to the United States. The 2020 Mazda MX-30 Electric Crossover Has Sporty Ambitions
Mazda’s first-ever electric car is finally here and unsurprisingly, the Japanese carmaker is insisting that the EV is still a car for the driver. What’s more, the MX-30 gets the freestyle doors last seen on the RX-8 sports car and it promises to cover around 200 kilometers (124 miles) on a single charge. Let’s find out more.
Mazda’s First EV Leaks Online, Will Be Called the MX-30
A photo of Mazda’s first all-electric vehicle leaked online ahead of its debut at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show on October 23. It’s called the MX-30, it’s a crossover, and it confirms its position between the CX-3 and CX-5 in the company’s lineup. It’s not yet clear whether this is a concept or a production model, but we will find out soon enough.
Mazda’s EV Will Be a Crossover Coupe….Yay
Mazda has dropped a new teaser for its new EV that’s set to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next week and, surprise surprise; it’s a coupe crossover. This can easily be deciphered from the sloping roofline shown off during part of the teaser video is a dead giveaway that’s backed up by Mazda’s description of a “coupe-like cabin” that accompanied the last teaser that showed off said cabin.
Long Live Mazda’s Wankel Rotary Engine!!!
It feels like Mazda has been dragging its feet when it comes to entering the electrification market, doesn’t it? I mean, as of now, the company is one of the few stragglers out there that doesn’t have a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle while the competition is already deep in the field, so to speak. All of that is about to change soon. Mazda is set to bring a new EV to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and, to top things off, it’s being boasted as an all-new model that features an all-new platform and design. In other words, it won’t just be a redressed Mazda 3 or Mazda 5 as we see automakers like BMW and Mercedes are doing. But, rumor has it there’s even more icing for this cake – icing that tastes like the Wankel rotary engine of day’s past and, suddenly, we’re excited. Let me tell you more about it.
Toyota Gives Mazda the Shaft on Battery Technology
Despite the partnership between Toyota, Mazda, and Denso to develop structural technologies for electric cars, Toyota showed up at the Tokyo Auto Show with news that its new solid-state battery technology is a “game changer,” but that it would not share the new technology with its partner Mazda. Apparently, the two brands will still share a platform that can support either current Lithium-Ion batteries on the new solid-state units that Toyota has developed in-house and will keep in-house.
This news comes just a few months after the initial deal between Toyota and Mazda was announced that included an investment from both automakers to build a $1.6 billion plant in the U.S. to develop “electric vehicle technology.” A month later, Denso was added into the mix, and a new contract was signed. The new plant will reportedly be built in the south and employ 4,000 people that will have a hand in producing 300,000 vehicles annually. Essentially, the companies will be sharing factory space and pulling certain parts – now, apparently, EV platforms – that they can all use in their vehicles, something that should help both companies shed a little bit of production costs.
Of course, we haven’t heard a word from Mazda as to whether or not it was expecting to get Toyota’s battery tech as well, but there certainly could be some drama flying around if it was an expectation of the deal. On the other hand, the move should help keep the companies competitive and hopefully Mazda has something up its sleeve as well. At this point, both companies really need to step up their EV game as stricter emissions laws are forcing automakers to shift into delivering more and more EVs in the coming years and some countries are outright banning the ICE altogether. There’s no word as to when Mazda will put its first EV on the road, but Toyota plans to launch its first EVs (probably SUVs or Crossovers) in the first few years of the next decade. Exciting stuff to say the least.
2017 Mazda Vision Coupe Concept
Mazda has had quite a few good years since 2012, introducing not only a very appealing design language but also a solid lineup of crossovers and SUVs. In addition, it came up with two wild Vision concepts, one that pays tribute to the Le Mans-winning 787B and one that previews a successor to the iconic RX-7 and a new-generation rotary engine. But it appears that the Japanese firm isn’t stopping here. At the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda unveiled the Vision Coupe, a sleek four-door that may become the company’s larger sedan yet.
Based on the RX-Vision design-wise, the Vision Coupe is unlike any other Mazda we’ve seen on the road. Not only larger than the Mazda 6, it also has a decidedly sporty attitude and a coupe-like roof that reminds of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the car that started this whole trend. And while there’s no official word on what Mazda will do with this concept, a full-size sedan is very likely in the future. With Mazda having offered such a model for only a few years in the 1980s and 1990s (remember the 929?), a full-size sedan would be a big deal for the Japanese automaker. But until we find out more about that, let’s take a closer look at Mazda’s most exciting sedan yet.

2017 Mazda Kai
Welcome to the future! Well, we’re not there quite yet, but the Mazda Kai Concept is essentially a quick look into the crystal ball that exposes the future of Mazda vehicles. Unlike Mazda’s “Vision” concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, the Kai is something that Mazda could actually make some in the near future. It could even possibly represent the next-gen Mazda3 hatchback – a model that will be due for replacement in the next three to four years anyway. So, what does it bring to the table? Try stunning looks, aggressive lines, sleek curves, and the SkyActiv-X powertrain that’s expected to propel the Mazda brand into the next decade. Meanwhile, the interior gets a toned down look with accents in just the right places, a display screen that’s as wide as the day is long, and a cabin that emphasizes space as much as it does the car’s sporty prowess.
So, will Mazda turn this into the next-gen Mazda3 Hatch? Well, it’s certainly too early to tell since the third-gen model was just revamped for the 2017 model year. So, by the time 2020 get here, we could see a production prototype of that bad boy tearing up the streets with the usual pre-production camo and cloud of mystery floating above it. But, until that happens, let’s take a closer look at this concept, talk some more about it, and speculate a bit about what it could become in the future.

Mazda has a lot Planned for the Tokyo Motor Show
As Mazda strives to lower its CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy, a new breed of Mazda vehicle and engine is about to be unleashed, and it’s something you need to pay attention to. The scene is the Tokyo Motor Show 2017, and the vision involves not one, but two new-gen concept vehicles that will debut next to the very engine that will propel the future vehicles they represent. Little is known about either at this time, but it’s probably safe to assume that Mazda isn’t going to let us down. So far, the brand has released a set of teasers to go along with shots of its new Skyativ-X engine. And, sorry folks, that Skyactiv-X isn’t the rotary engine we’ve all been begging for, but it’s still pretty cool.
So, what does Mazda have on its plate for us in Tokyo? Well, keep reading to find out more and hear a few predictions.
New Sports Cars Could Take The Tokyo Motor Show By Storm
Just as news is coming out that nine major automakers are skipping the Frankfurt Motor Show, there appears to be growing rumblings that the Tokyo Motor Show will play to not one, not two, but three sports car debuts. It’s already been rumored that the return of the Toyota Supra will take place in Tokyo, but according to Autobild, the Supra will also be joined by the Mazda RX-9 and the Nissan 390Z.
Obviously, this is pretty big news seeing three separate automakers launch three separate performance cars. They may be different in presentation, but the fact that all three automakers – major ones at that – are going to present sports cars that could turn into rivals of the others is making the Tokyo Motor Show a must-see event. To be clear, though, neither Mazda nor Nissan have confirmed their plans for their local auto show. Likewise, we’ve heard very little about the RX-9 at this point and even less about the Nissan 390Z. If these two cars do show up in Tokyo, it’s going to catch a lot of people off-guard. Even Toyota hasn’t confirmed its plans for Tokyo, even though all signs point to its next sports car making its world debut at the event. It might be best to taper off the excitement for the time being, or at least until we know something more concrete. That said, it is tempting to get a little excited about the possibility of three Japanese sports cars all showing up and debuting in the same event. And they said those days were gone.

Mazda’s highly anticipated sports car concept has been unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, confirming that the Japanese automaker is set to not only revive the RX nameplate, but also bring a mass-produced rotary engine to the market. Dubbed RX-VISION concept, the sleek looking sports car previews the fourth-generation RX-7 and the brand’s next-generation rotary engine.
Though Mazda’s press release for the RX-VISION concept was rather brief, our friends over at Top Gear managed to obtain more details from Kiyoshi Fujiwara — the company’s head of R&D — who confirmed that the production car will indeed wear the RX-7 badge.
“Will it be called RX-9? Well, all previous RX-7s have been two or 2+2 seaters and the RX-8 was a four-seater, so what would that make RX-9? A six-seater? This concept is a two-seater so you can imagine which number fits best,” he said.
Fujiwara also divulged precious information about the next-generation SkyActiv-R rotary engine, the car’s curb weight, and the segment the production model will compete in, but you’ll have to keep reading to find out more about that.

The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show is just around the corner, and even though the event will be packed with dozens of interesting concepts, all eyes are on Mazda’s new two-door sports car, — rumored to preview the next-generation RX-7. As if Mazda’s teaser depicting a hot looking coupe wasn’t interesting enough, the Japanese brand tuned it to confirm that the concept car, as well as the upcoming production model, will be powered by a new-generation rotary engine.
"People think rotary can not meet modern Eco demands. The SkyActiv engineers worked on rotary and have it cutting edge tech. It is an essential part of our DNA and it just be passed onto future engineers. It is synonymous with the brand. Some time in the future it will return and be called SkyActiv-R," Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Mazda’s head of research and development told Autocar.
The brand didn’t say whether this new sports car will mark the return of the RX nameplate, but CEO Masamichi Kogai described the new concept as a "pure sports car design," which hints toward the RX-7.
"We have MX-5 and another icon that is a rotary sports car. We haven’t talked about market reach but this would be in that segment," he said, adding that the concept "represents our dream, but we don’t want it to be a dream too long."

Having just unveiled the Koeru concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Mazda has announced yet another premier for the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show in October. This time around though, the Japanese will launch a concept car that previews a future sports car.
"Mazda’s latest creation clearly embodies the carmaker’s lineage. Designers strove to condense the company’s sports car history to as great a degree as possible into this concept," is all Mazda had to say about the new concept, while releasing a shadowy teaser of a slick coupe.
Though I can’t see any details below the waist, the concept is obviously a full-fledged grand tourer employing a long engine hood, a sloping roof, and a short rear deck. The vehicle also features a pair of taillights placed high into the rear fascia, a detail that seems borrowed from the RX-7. Down below, a pair of big, round exhaust tips are visible, suggesting the grand tourer will pack a powerful engine.
Even though there’s no official confirmation as of yet, it seems as if Mazda is finally working on a closed-top sports car to fill the gap the brand has in its lineup since it discontinued the RX-8 in 2012. But will this new vehicle be a spiritual successor to the RX-8 or another sports car from Mazda’s past?

The attention of the U.S. auto market is focused squarely on the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, but the folks in Japan are more interested in what’s going on at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show set to open its gates on November 21st.
Japan-based Mazda is also turning its focus to its home country with an impressive lineup for the Tokyo show, with one of the vehicles being a concept version based on the new Mazda3. This Mazda3 concept will offer an all-new engine that is bound to get all those looking to rid themselves of fossil fuels amped up for the show.
Mazda has decided to offer this new Mazda3 concept with a CNG-powered engine. This isn’t too much of a surprise, considering the increasing demand for CNG-powered vehicles — or anything other than gasoline, for that matter.
The new CNG Concept features a dual-fuel system that runs on either gasoline or CNG, making refilling the tank as convenient as possible. This new system allows the concept to reduce emission by about 20 percent. If natural gas prices are near the same $2.06 per gallon that they are here, then it will like save some bucks (Yen) at the pumps too.
Alongside the new CNG Concept Mazda will display a few other concepts based on the new Mazda6.

While most of our attention is focused on the upcoming 2013 Detroit Auto Show, people in Japan are preparing themselves for the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon — not as popular as Detroit, but still a pretty good chance to see some cool upgrade packages offered for current models.
Mazda, for example, announced an impressive lineup as six vehicles to be displayed in Tokyo, one of the most impressive one being the Atenza Racer (known as the Mazda6 in the U.S. market). According to the first details we have on this cool model, the new Atenza Racer has been designed as a "response to a request of the user who is running the circuit, and comfort."
The model features M’z CUSTOM (M’s custom) aero parts, Brembo brake calipers and engine upgrades. On the inside, Mazda installed sporty leather seats and a set of alloy pedals. No details on the final specifications have been provided just yet, but we expect to learn them pretty soon.
One of the models to be displayed by Mazda at the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon is based on the CX-5 SUV. This concept is called Active Driver and has been specially designed for those active families that need plenty of luggage space, but also the strong torque delivered by the CX-5’s "SKYACTIV-D" technology.
The new CX-5 Active Driver is painted in white with carbon fiber inserts on the hood and numerous gloss-black accents. The car is also offered with a set of unique alloy wheels. For the interior, Mazda has added new sports seats, a new steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara and alloy pedals to go along with color combo of black and red.
We cannot tell for sure what engine is under the hood, but we do know that it will feature SKYACTIV-D technology, like 14-to-1 compression, two-stage turbocharger and weight reduction. Will learn full details in January 2013 when the model makes its world debut.
When Mazda unveiled their new ’Kodo’ design language, it marked a changing of the guard as far as the company’s new design philosophy was concerned.
The first two examples of this new chapter in Mazda design came in the form of the Shinari and Minagi concepts. And now, a third model is expected to join the fold with its debut scheduled for the Tokyo Auto Show in November 2011.
The third Kodo-influenced concept is called the Takeri and it’s being touted as the eventual successor and next-generation model of the Mazda6. The Takeri Concept successfully follows in the steps of both the Shinari and Minagi concepts in that it carries the same "expression of motion that focuses on the strength, beauty and tension found in the instantaneous movement seen in animals" - or as how Mazda describes its new Kodo-Soul of Motion design language.
Full details surrounding the Takeri Concept have yet to be revealed, although it appears that it will carry Mazda’s new SKYACTIV technology that is geared towards producing a range of hybrid versions for the next-generation Mazda6. Other rumored elements of the Takeri Concept include a high tensile, lightweight steel chassis, regenerative brakes, and start-stop engine technology

The 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon will begin right after the Detroit Auto Show in January and many automakers are releasing all kinds of information on their lineup for the show floor in Japan. For example, Mazda will be bringing plenty of specially customized MX-5 models, including the MX-5 NR-A Jinba Ittai and the MX-5 Black Tuned edition.
The Black Tuned Edition is based on the special edition MX-5 Sport Black model announced earlier this year, but going on sale in the spring of 2012. The model adopts black-based special features for both the interior and exterior, and offers a full range of exclusive specifications including BBS lightweight alloy wheels, Bilstein height adjustable dampers, a Brembo brake system (painted in gold for the front), and Recaro seats.
The list of standard equipment for the Mazda MX-5 Black Tuned Edition includes climate control air-conditioning, a premium Bose audio system, an integrated hands-free Bluetooth system, cruise control, and front fog lights.
