The McLaren 720S is in attendance at the Art Basel show in Miami, Florida. Whereas the presence of a supercar of the stature of the 720S would usually draw a crowd in it of itself, this particular 720S stands out for one specific reason: it’s wearing the artwork of renowned New York-based graffiti artist Alec Monopoly.

The 33-year old artist took the task of turning the 720S into a full-blown art car — art cars are an Art Basel Miami tradition — that speaks to his famous style of street art. The McLaren 720S isn’t just wearing Monopoly’s street art; it’s also been fitted with aftermarket components courtesy of 1016 Industries, including what might as well be the fanciest set of wheels we’ve seen in a long time.

The McLaren 720S shows up in Art Car form

It’s a McLaren 720S in stature and performance, but as far as aesthetics go, it qualifies as an Art Car, too. The artist behind the unique look of this 720S is renowned street graffiti artist Alec Monopoly. The 33-year old, New York-based street artist took on the challenge of designing a white 720S based in his trademark graffiti-style artworks.

To that extent, Monopoly did not disappoint. The McLaren 720S doesn’t get the full-body design treatment that past Art Cars received, but there are still enough details to make it stand out, most notably the presence of both the Monopoly Man and Richie Rich, the two characters that essentially launched Monopoly’s star as a sensation back in the late 2000s.

Over on the other side is an image of Richie Rich, who seems oblivious to the fact that the Monopoly Man is holding his money bags. At least that’s how I interpreted it. The rest of the 720S’ body features graffiti-style signs of the artist’s name and international currency signs. Monopoly’s trademark paint spray drippings can also be found throughout the body of the 720S.

There’s more to this McLaren 720S than Alec Monopoly’s graffiti art

Alec Monopoly’s work on the McLaren 720S will get all the headlines, as it should. But the reality is that Monopoly isn’t the only one who worked on this specific 720S. Less conspicuous in its efforts, but no less important, is the contribution of 1016 Industries.

The British supercar’s carbon fiber hood, for example, comes from the tuner. That’s just one part, too. Check out the full list of 1016 Industries’ carbon fiber parts for the McLaren 720S below:

Needless to say, this McLaren 720S Art Car is dressed to impress at Art Basel Miami 2019. And what better way to deliver that point home than by giving the 720S a set of stunning chrome purple wheels.

It’s one thing to cover it up in wraps, graphics, or decals, but to spray paint on its body surely won’t sit well with some people. Then again, that’s always been the value of art in this world. Some people don’t appreciate it while others do.

It looks fine and dandy, but this 720S can still leave you in the dust

The McLaren 720S is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The V-8’s output is rated at 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-cutch transmission comes standard and that’s responsible for transferring the power from the engine to the two rear wheels.

All told, the McLaren 720 is capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. It can also accelerate from 0 to 124 mph in 7.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 212 mph.

The McLaren 720S is built to perform, and even if it’s dressed up in the graffiti work of Alec Monopoly and wears a few carbon fiber bits from 1016 Industries, this McLaren 720S Art Car remains a handful on the road.

Art Basel’s history with cars

For those who aren’t clued in on what Art Basel is, it is a privately owned and managed international art fair staged annually over three locations: Basel, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Miami, Florida.

Every so often, car models, mainly performance vehicles, are showcased at the event as art cars. Over the past years, we’ve seen plenty of these so-called Art Cars. Models like the Porsche 911 Speedster, BMW M6, the first-generation Tesla Roadster, and even the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport have all been showcased and displayed at Art Basel wearing what can be best described as unique artworks.
