A fitting aftermarket upgrade for a British supercar from an Italian tuner

LISTEN 06:55

The McLaren 720S Spider is a certified supercar. It has the design proportions of a McLaren and it features a potent V-8 engine that can lay the smackdown on any car that gets in its way. It’s hard to imagine a car that already has 710 horsepower on tap to gain more power to smoke them fools, but that’s why the aftermarket world exists in the first place. It’s a place where a tuner like Novitec can take a McLaren 720 S and tinker with it to the extent that it now comes with enough power to put most of its rivals in their proper places. This is the world of automotive tuning inhabited by Novitec. Just when you thought that it can’t get any better for your McLaren 720S, the German tuner finds a way to make it happen.

What Makes the McLaren 720S Spider by Novitec Different?

Before you get excited about the power and performance gains Novitec achieved with its new tuning kit for the McLaren 720S, the whole program wouldn’t be complete without the supplemental upgrades in the supercar’s exterior and interior. We’ll start there and save the engine upgrade program for last because, well, that is the main event.

You’ll notice from the photos that the McLaren 720S Spider is sporting something of a two-tone grey and black finish. The latter isn’t actually painted black; it’s forged carbon, a unique carbon fiber material that comes with its unique aesthetic.

A plethora of aerodynamic parts is treated in this manner, including the entire front spoiler, side panels, the air intake covers in back, the trunk lid in the front, the side air intakes that are specific to the 720S Spider, and the rear wing.

Mind you, these are just a few parts. If you want the entire catalog, you can also avail forged carbon versions of the 720S Spider’s front flaps, air intakes on the trunk lid, cover mirrors, rear bumper, and the entire diffuser setup. It’s a comprehensive catalog, for sure.

Imagine Novitec doing its best Oprah impersonation, looking at all the pieces in the supercar that could benefit from a forged carbon treatment, and then yelling, “You get forged carbon! You get forged carbon! Everyone gets forged carbon!”

That’s what it looks like in my head when I see Novitec’s forged carbon aero parts catalog for the McLaren 720S Spider. It’s extensive and, quite frankly, a little awe-inspiring.

The tuner is also offering a menu of delectable wheel sets as part of this program.

There are a number of options to choose from in this regard, though most configurations involve a pair of 20-inch Vossen wheels in the front and a pair of 21-inch Vossen wheels at the back. Wheel designs come standard courtesy of Vossen’s Type MC3 forged alloys, though if you want to add a splash personality in the rims, you can opt to choose from several colors, including Satin Black, Gloss Silver, and Gloss Gunmetal.

There’s also the option of customizing the wheel color if none of the aforementioned options tickles your fancy. Solid color options run the entire color palette, ranging from Gloss Black to Miami White. Some interesting colors in between include Butterscotch, Pewter, Textured Bronze, Denim Blue, Ultraviolet, and Fire Red. If you prefer the Transparent color options, you can choose from an equally diverse list that includes Platinum, Honeycomb, Copper Penny, Merlot, Flamingo Pink, Deco Teal, and Limelight. There are a lot of interesting choices in this department. If anything, this is where you can express a bit of your personality, too. After all, there aren’t a lot of things more flamboyant than a set of Ultraviolet wheels.

Now, let’s move on to the interior of the McLaren 720S Spider. Unfortunately, Novitec didn’t cover this section of the 720S Spider with its new tuning kit for the supercar. That said, there are other avenues for you to personalize the cabin of your 720S Spider, including McLaren’s very own MSO division, which, without question, has the deepest menu of options and personalization tools for any and all McLaren models, including the 720S Spider.

With nothing much to show in the way of interior upgrades, let’s head to the main event: the engine upgrade program.

In typical Novitec fashion, the German tuner is offering not one, not two, but three different engine upgrade programs for the McLaren 720S Spider.

The first stage, called Novitec N-Tronic, is primarily a software tune of the 720S Spider’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The entire kit is made up of that plug and play tuning module. That’s it.

Don’t be fooled, though, by the simplicity of the program. On its own, the N-Tronic tuning module is capable of increasing the twin-turbo V-8’s output from the standard 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque to a tasty 773 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque. That’s an increase of 63 ponies and 58 pound-feet of torque over.

In the event that you’re looking for a bit more for your 720S Spider, Novitec’s N-Tronic Power Stage 2 program comes with the same tuning module but adds a custom-built exhaust system with polished tailpipes and a catalyst-replacement pipe.

The results that come with the added hardware arrives at 806 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque.

At this point, we’re already looking at an increase of 96 horsepower and 80 pound-feet of torque over the V-8’s standard output. Those are already impressive numbers that should satisfy a lot of customers, and the improved performance numbers should make for more fans out of the program.

All told, the McLaren 720S Spider that’s equipped with Novitec’s Power Stage 2 program can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.7 seconds. That’s 0.1 seconds quicker than the standard 720S Spider. It can also cover 0 to 124 mph in 7.6 seconds, or 0.3 seconds quicker than the standard model. The supercar’s top speed also increases from 212 mph to 215 mph.

To accommodate the bump in power and improvement in performance, the tuner is also offering suspension modifications in the form of a new sport spring set and aluminum spacers.

Put these pieces together and you get a compelling tuning kit for the McLaren 720S Spider. The whole program checks a lot of boxes in terms of customer needs. From the carbon fiber aerodynamic bits to the engine upgrade programs, you will get top-flight bang for your buck when you purchase this tuning kit from Novitec for your McLaren 720S Spider.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read full bio
