There’s nothing inherently wrong with more carbon fiber, right?

McLaren’s road-spec 620R is one of the most hardcore machines to come out of Woking, England in recent years. Not only is it the most powerful “Sports Series” McLaren in the lineup, but it was developed specifically to go fast. Nothing about the 620R counts as subtle, and that includes McLaren’s new “R Pack,” which the automaker is launching to make what is already a hardcore supercar even more hardcore.

What’s so cool about McLaren’s R Pack for the 620R?

If you’re a fan of carbon fiber and loud angry noises coming out of the exhaust, McLaren’s R Pack is just what the doctor ordered. As if the McLaren 620R wasn’t extreme enough, the R Pack raises the ante with more carbon fiber components that you can care to count.

One of the big items in the pack is a gloss-finished carbon fiber roof scoop that’s not only inspired by the McLaren F1 Longtail but, more importantly, operates as a stand-alone air intake system.

There’s also a camera hidden in the equipment that works in concert with the McLaren Track Telemetry system that comes standard across all units of the 620R. If you’re the type to indulge in track-day shenanigans, the carbon fiber roof scoop will come in handy not only with the aerodynamic benefits but, more importantly, with the camera’s capacity to record your track sessions.

Speaking of enhancements, the new carbon fiber fender louvers give the 620R a meaner mug while the MSO Defined Titanium SuperSports Exhaust system raises the noise levels by as much as five decibels. Mind you, the 620R’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine is already capable of producing a guttural roar that can make your ears bleed. Throw in this new exhaust system from MSO Defined and you might as well wake up the neighbors with the sharper note coming out of the exhaust.

Interior upgrades are also part of the R Pack menu. McLaren didn’t dive into the specifics of the Carbon Fiber Interior Pack, but it’s likely that this is the same package that’s available for other McLaren models. If that’s the case, expect the interior of the 620R to drown in carbon fiber goodness because of this pack. We’re talking about interior components, door inserts, and surfaces all dressed in the good stuff. All these upgrades are included in the McLaren’s R Pack for the 620R.

Is it excessive to add the R Pack to the McLaren 620R?

I suppose it depends on your taste for carbon fiber and loud splitting noises coming out of the exhaust system of your McLaren 620R. To be clear, the R Pack isn’t a required package to make the 620R better in different ways. The 620R is already a hardcore successor of the 570S derived from the 570S GT4 race car.

McLaren’s all-too-familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine powers the 620R to the tune of 611 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque.

The increased output — 49 horsepower and 14 pound-feet of torque more than the output of the standard 570S — was achieved after McLaren engineers tweaked the V-8’s ECU unit and made improvements to the pair of turbochargers that are also part of the powertrain.

With these engine modifications in place, the 620R is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.

That’s 0.3 seconds faster than the McLaren 570S. Likewise, the 620R can also cover 0 to 124 mph in just 8.1 seconds, or 1.4 seconds faster than the supercar it’s succeeding.

As a raunchy, road-spec version of a track car, the 620R also comes with aggressive aeros, none more prominent than the giant — and adjustable — rear wing sitting at the rear section of the supercar. According to McLaren, the massive wing develops as much as 185 kilos of downforce at speeds o 155 mph. That’s cutting-edge capability for a supercar of the 620R’s stature. McLaren’s all-new lightweight brakes are also part of the 620R. Let’s just say you’re going to need these brakes to be as good as advertised with the amount of power and performance that the 620R possesses.

McLaren 620R specifications
Engine 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8
Horsepower 611 HP
Torque 457 LB-FT
0 to 60 mph 2.9 seconds
0 to 124 mph 8.1 seconds
Top Speed 200 mph

Now, throw in the new R Pack and it’s hard to imagine not enjoying the McLaren 620R more than you already do. The pack itself is expensive — £25,000 ($32,500) — but if you’re going to pay for a supercar that costs $299,000, its cost is a drop in the bucket.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More

The McLaren 620R can now be ordered with an exclusive ‘R Pack’ from the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) bespoke division. This optional package, available to customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa, includes several design and engineering upgrades that further intensify the immersive driving experience of the most track-focused and powerful Sports Series model ever.

The R Pack includes a Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre Roof Scoop; Titanium SuperSports Exhaust with Gloss Nano Black finishers; Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre Front Fender Louvres and a Carbon Fibre Interior Pack.

The striking Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre Roof Scoop was inspired by the legendary McLaren F1 Longtail and operates as a fully functional air intake system that invigorates the driving experience with its active air induction sound. The Roof Scoop can also feature a camera, which operates in conjunction with the McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) system to record the epic track sessions of the most passionate owners.

Enhancing driver engagement further, the MSO Defined Titanium SuperSports Exhaust is up to 5 decibels louder than other Sports Series exhaust options and delivers a sharper and more characterful exhaust note.

The MSO Defined Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre Front Fender Louvres provide a striking visual enhancement at the front of the 620R, while a Carbon Fibre Interior Pack complements the purposeful and track-inspired interior of the vehicle. Further increasing the appeal of the MSO R Pack is its UK price of £25,000, which is a significantly less that the cost of options when purchased individually.

The McLaren 620R is the first car in its class to offer true motorsport credentials in a fully road-legal package. The limited-edition coupé evolves the competition specification of the McLaren 570S GT4 to deliver a pure motorsport experience in a road car and providing a seamless transition from race to road that is free from any restrictions that race regulations apply.

Power is delivered by a M838TE 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine used in McLaren 570S GT4 car, which has been reconfigured to achieve 620PS (610 bhp) and develops 620Nm (457lb ft) of torque, making the 620R the most powerful Sports Series derivative ever, with acceleration of 0-100km/h (62mph) in 2.9 seconds and 0-200km/h (124mph) in 8.1 seconds.

Aerodynamic, hardware and chassis components are also shared with the 570S GT4 to offer race car performance and the fastest lap time of any Sports Series model. The aerodynamic bodywork of the McLaren 620R develops a total of 185kg of downforce at 250 km/h, and the coupé comes with carbon ceramic brakes, centre locking wheels and two-way manually adjustable GT4 dampers featuring 32 clicks of adjustment per corner. Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyre are standard, with a Pirelli slick tyre for track use only also available.

Only 225 examples of the McLaren 620R will be produced globally. For more information on the GT4-inspired McLaren 620R - and the MSO R Pack – customers should contact a McLaren Retailer in Europe, Middle East and Africa
