McLaren has followed up on the 765LT by introducing a drop-top version called the 765LT Spider. The 765LT came out as the range-topping model in the company’s Super Series family. It shared its DNA with the 720S, but made more power, came with an aero-focused body, and featured a lot of carbon fiber components. The 765LT Spider is a convertible version of this beast and is limited to 765 examples, just like the standard coupe. It will start at a shade under $400,000.

McLaren 765LT Spider – Exterior

The biggest difference on this Longtail, track-focused model is the retractable hardtop. It’s a carbon fiber frame within the hardtop panel that can be retracted or raised in 11 seconds. You can operate at speed of up to 31 mph. To put things into perspective, the 675LT Spider’s roof took 17 seconds for the whole operation. Unlike the 675LT Spider which makes use of a hydraulic pump, the 765LT Spider’s system features electric motors that quicken the whole operation and don’t wait for things to happen in a sequence.

Folks who want to know a little more about this convertible system, it is powered by eight electrical motors. Two of them fold the roof panel, two raise and lower the tonneau cover, two control the dynamic flaps which deploy on the tonneau buttresses when the roof is open, and the other two control the rear window.

Since it is a one-piece unit, it creates a full carbon fiber shell when closed. It also offers more headroom since there’s no central seal that runs from side to side across the roof panel. Also, the rear window can be lowered even when the roof is up. This is to intensify the acoustics of the exhaust.

The 765LT Spider also features a center-mounted quad-exit titanium exhaust setup, something that’s sort of a trend with supercars lately. The automaker noted that such is the strength and stiffness of the structure that no additional bracing was required. The carbon fiber structural supports seen at the rear are fully bonded into the chassis to provide rollover protection. As for its shoes, the 765LT Spider rides on ultra-lightweight forged wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires on all four corners.

The track-focused car comes with the same aero package as the coupe. The active rear wing, however, is recalibrated to reflect whether the roof is up or down. Even the dampers are recalibrated to account for the added weight. When compared to the 720S Spider, it offers 25-percent more downforce.

In terms of dimensions, it is identical to the 765LT coupe except for the width when the doors are opened. The 765LT Spider features different doors that are smaller, lighter, and make use of just a single hinge. They don’t have an upper carbon frame either. However, they add 4.7 inches on each side.

There Are A Lot Of Weight-Saving Measures

The 765LT Spider weighs 3,060 pounds; only 108 pounds heavier than its coupe counterpart. When compared to the 720S Spider, it is 176 pounds lighter. McLaren also notes that the front splitter, new front bumper, lower door blades, side skirts, the wraparound rear bumper, and active rear wing are all composed of carbon fiber, just like the 765LT.

The 765LT Spider rides on LT’s bespoke Ultra-Lightweight forged alloy wheels. These wheels are said to be 48.5 pounds lighter than the non-LT wheels. The company has also saved weight by installed a titanium exhaust system and a lighter battery.

In case you’d like to reduce the weight further, you can opt for a carbon fiber hood, front and rear fenders, and door panels. They are composed of light aluminum as standard. If you opt for carbon fiber construction for all these components, you will further save 13.4 pounds.

McLaren 765LT Spider – Interior

The interior is just as track-focused as the rest of the car. It features carbon fiber-shelled race seats as standard and are 40 pounds lighter than the ones on the 720 S. They come upholstered – or more like covered of what's left – in Alcantara. Alcantara is used on the dash, doors, and steering wheel as well. There’s an eight-inch portrait-style screen on the center console that’s tilted towards the driver. You can also see the folding driver display behind the three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel.

In place of door pockets, the 765LT Spider comes with nets to hold stuff. And, there is carbon fiber used in a whole lot of places. Taking the weight-reduction methods to next level, McLaren has deleted the floor carpet, the audio system, and the air conditioner, too! You can purchase the air conditioner separately and can option a four-speaker audio system at no additional cost. A Bowers & Wilkins audio system is also available. Had it not been a track-focused car, I’d say this was a little too much.

There’s also the debossed 765LT logo and the unique numbered dedication plaque. Since this is a convertible model, the engine window makes way for the folding roof mechanism. As for the cargo area, the automaker says there is additional space under the tonneau cover and 5.3 cubic feet of space at the front. Finally, there are eight interior themes to choose from and all of them are no-cost options.

McLaren 765LT Spider – Drivetrain

The 765LT Spider is powered by the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbo M840T V-8 engine as the standard model. It puts out 765 PS, which is 755 ponies at 7,500 rpm, and 590 pound-feet of twist at 5,500 rpm. Power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The company has noted that the 765LT Spider can sprint to 60 mph from rest in just 2.7 seconds, the same as the coupe. McLaren also noted that 0-124 mph can be achieved in 7.2 seconds and the Spider takes 10 seconds to quarter-mile. The top speed is rated at 205 mph.
