It’s Time For The Shelby GT500 to Prove Itself Against the McLaren 720S
If you’re a regular TopSpeed reader, then you’re no stranger to what the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 can do in a straight-line race. We’ve covered a lot of situations where the muscle car destroyed its peers in a drag race or it bravely held its ground in front of the likes of Ferrari 812 Superfast and Porsche 911 GT3 RS, even on a twisty track.
This time, though, the GT500 found its match in the McLaren 720S. Not only that, but the GT500 you’re about to see getting a beating (repeatedly) from the Macca isn’t running on stock gear, as it has been modded to churn out 800 horsepower.
Did We Just Catch a McLaren GT Hybrid in the Wild?
The McLaren GT was introduced in 2019, and we know for sure that the mule we see here is, in fact, a McLaren GT. Be that as it may, it was caught in a residential neighborhood in France by a friend of Topspeed, and it certainly raises a few questions. First, why is there a camouflaged McLaren GT cruising around France? Second, why was it parked outside a residential area? Third, why do the wheels have “Dyn Wheel” written all over them? Well, we think that McLaren might be testing its new V-6 hybrid drivetrain.

From the first time it surfaced online to the present day, the McLaren Senna has been the subject of numerous track battles, road trips, and standalone reviews. They’re all well-documented through articles or videos, but there’s never been an instance where the supercar is let to stretch its legs freely and make the most out of its V-8. Or should we say… spread its wings and take off?
Someone took a Senna for a standing mile top speed test at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds runway to see if the McLaren-declared top speed of 208 mph is indeed attainable in real life.
Can the Bentley Continental GT V8 beat the McLaren GT in the quarter mile?
Drag races these days can involve cars that sport different personalities and purposes. These days, you can expect a BMW 7 Series to do battle against the humble Dacia Logan MCV just to see how they fare in the quarter-mile run, or you can have your family EV going against all-out supercars... and win by a landslide.
But do you know what? Not many people drag race luxury cars. We, for one, would like to see how the S-Class compares to the Audi A8 in a straight line, or let’s say, how the Bentley Continental GT stacks up against the McLaren GT. Wait, what? It’s been done?
On a Circuit, the McLaren Speedtail Is Like the 720S... Minus 10, 15 Percent
After the likes of P1 and Senna, the Speedtail is the third member of McLaren’s Ultimate Series. It comes wrapped as a hybrid hyper grand tourer and it recently proved its mettle in a straight line, where it hit 403 km/h (250 mph) more than 30 times during pre-production testing.
Now, McLaren was initially very coy on specific details regarding the Speedtail. However, we now know that the Speedtail mixes a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 with an electric motor or “parallel hybrid system” as McLaren calls it. What we also know is that it has front wheel spats and that Chris Harris would rather have the Speedtail than the Senna.

The video itself is about as clickbaity as it can get. If the title “OFF ROADING MY MCLAREN 720S... i regret destroying my car” doesn’t clue you in, perhaps the thumbnail hinting at a destroyed engine will. To be honest, the title definitely got us, and we sure did watch it. After all, who doesn’t want to see some overly wealthy ass off-road a car with 4.2-inches of ground clearance? It’s not something most of us would do, and that’s the beauty of it. However, as it turned out, this video is intended to be an advertisement for Ceramic Pro, an exterior coating that protects automotive paint.
The video was uploaded by Alex Choi, and we’re not sure if it’s actually an official ad or not. If it’s not, then I have a feeling someone just muscled themselves into an advertising job. Back to the point at hand, the near-7-minute video is downright awesome, featuring a number of stunts, amazing camera angles, and some pretty hardcore dirt-track racing with the aforementioned McLaren 720S.
As much as I like the Fast and Furious franchise, I have to admit that this long advertisement is certainly better than that last trailer for Fast and Furious 9, and to be honest, the action scenes might be better than the last three movies combined. The McLaren Senna Is the New King of the World’s Greatest Drag Race
You must be familiar with MotorTrend’s World’s Greatest Drag Race title by now. It has reached its ninth interpretation and it’s safe to say that we’re looking at the craziest, most extreme iteration of the drag race.
Part of that is because the McLaren Senna is involved in it. Sure, none of the other cars can be called a slouch, but McLaren’s work on the Senna is paying off big time, especially if we are to consider that after launching the not-so-perfect MP4-12C, the Brits have been resilient in improving their sports cars.
A McLaren P1 and Senna Pull Up to the Drag Strip and the Results Are Surprising
If you had a choice between two McLarens to go toe-to-toe in a drag race, the obvious candidates are clear. The McLaren P1 and the McLaren Senna are two of the most powerful cars in the British automaker’s portfolio and the question on which of the two is faster on a drag strip has been asked by a lot of people.
McLaren hasn’t given the people what they want, but that’s all moot now. Here’s a video of the two McLarens finally coming together for a nice ol’ drag race, and the results are pretty surprising, to say the least.
2020 Novitec N-Largo McLaren 720S Spider
The N-Largo tuning program from Novitec has reached its fair share of speed demons, especially of the Lamborghini and McLaren ilk. In fact, it was only last year when the 720S Coupé was submitted to the treatment.
Well, it looks like the German tuner isn’t showing signs of cutting down on that practice, because its latest concoction is a wide-body Macca 720S Spider that wears the said N-Largo attire. And it looks a lot like the convertible Senna we’re never going to get, which ultimately shouldn’t raise many eyebrows as the Senna is largely based on the 720S in the first place. The McLaren Speedtail Is Officially The Fastest McLaren Ever Made
When it introduced the Speedtail back in October 2018, McLaren said that it will be the fastest vehicle it has built so far. More than one year later and it’s official, the Speedtail has the highest top speed of any McLaren to date. The hybrid supercar hit a top speed of 250 mph during tests on the the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds drag strip at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, surpassing the previous record holder, the McLaren F1.

The McLaren 720S is in attendance at the Art Basel show in Miami, Florida. Whereas the presence of a supercar of the stature of the 720S would usually draw a crowd in it of itself, this particular 720S stands out for one specific reason: it’s wearing the artwork of renowned New York-based graffiti artist Alec Monopoly.
The 33-year old artist took the task of turning the 720S into a full-blown art car — art cars are an Art Basel Miami tradition — that speaks to his famous style of street art. The McLaren 720S isn’t just wearing Monopoly’s street art; it’s also been fitted with aftermarket components courtesy of 1016 Industries, including what might as well be the fanciest set of wheels we’ve seen in a long time.
The Gordon Murray T.50 - A McLaren F1 Successor - Has Crazy Aerodynamics
Twenty-five years after helping launch the McLaren F1 supercar, auto design legend Gordon Murray is hard at work on finally launching the F1’s spiritual successor, the T.50.
Though not officially a McLaren model, the T.50 traces its roots to the F1, in part because of Murray’s involvement in designing both cars. Consider the T.50, then, like a modern-day version of the F1, complete with the delta-formation, three-seater layout and an outrageous amount of cutting-edge aerodynamic technology that’s never before seen in a production car.
The Entire McLaren Lineup Will Be Hybrid by 2024 - Here’s What It Means
McLaren has never been bashful about its plans to go hybrid, and now, company CEO Mike Flewitt has pulled the curtains on plans to fully hybridize its entire lineup in the next three to four years. At the heart of this hybrid evolution is McLaren’s next-generation supercar, which will come with an all-wheel-drive setup that includes an electrically driven front axle.
McLaren also has plans to shake up its engine lineup to accommodate this shift. That could spell doom for one of the company’s existing engines, specifically the current V-8 unit that powers a lot of McLaren’s models. McLaren’s plans are already in motion as the company is expected to announce its next-generation platform and hybrid powertrain sometime in the first quarter of 2020. The first of these hybrid vehicles is scheduled to arrive by the end of 2020 with sales expected to commence in early 2021.
2021 McLaren 620R
The 2021 McLaren 620R is the range-topping version of the Sports Series, the company’s entry-level lineage of sports cars. Essentially a road-legal version of the 570S GT4, the 2021 620R slots above the 600LT. Design-wise, the 2021 620R is almost identical to the 570S GT4. It also features the same engine, but because it’s not restricted by racing regulations, the V-8 boasts more power.
Rated at 610 horsepower, the 2021 620R is the most powerful Sports Series vehicle ever created. It’s also the quickest, but it lags behind its siblings when it comes to top speed. With production limited to 350 units, the 2021 McLaren 620R costs almost $300,000. Let’s find out more about this supercar in the review below.
