It has more drag race wins under its belt than we can count and it’s arguably one of the most quick-accelerating cars on sale today. But it is no match for the audacious Volkswagen ID.R.
It’s Time For The Shelby GT500 to Prove Itself Against the McLaren 720S
If you’re a regular TopSpeed reader, then you’re no stranger to what the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 can do in a straight-line race. We’ve covered a lot of situations where the muscle car destroyed its peers in a drag race or it bravely held its ground in front of the likes of Ferrari 812 Superfast and Porsche 911 GT3 RS, even on a twisty track.
This time, though, the GT500 found its match in the McLaren 720S. Not only that, but the GT500 you’re about to see getting a beating (repeatedly) from the Macca isn’t running on stock gear, as it has been modded to churn out 800 horsepower.

Drag races these days can involve cars that sport different personalities and purposes. These days, you can expect a BMW 7 Series to do battle against the humble Dacia Logan MCV just to see how they fare in the quarter-mile run, or you can have your family EV going against all-out supercars... and win by a landslide.
But do you know what? Not many people drag race luxury cars. We, for one, would like to see how the S-Class compares to the Audi A8 in a straight line, or let’s say, how the Bentley Continental GT stacks up against the McLaren GT. Wait, what? It’s been done?
A McLaren P1 and Senna Pull Up to the Drag Strip and the Results Are Surprising
If you had a choice between two McLarens to go toe-to-toe in a drag race, the obvious candidates are clear. The McLaren P1 and the McLaren Senna are two of the most powerful cars in the British automaker’s portfolio and the question on which of the two is faster on a drag strip has been asked by a lot of people.
McLaren hasn’t given the people what they want, but that’s all moot now. Here’s a video of the two McLarens finally coming together for a nice ol’ drag race, and the results are pretty surprising, to say the least.

Apart from all those drool-worthy cars of all shapes and sizes, 2020 will also bring us a new series of Top Gear. Which means, hopefully, that Chris Harris and the gang will be back with even more wit on BBC Two.

Over the past two decades or so, the terms sports car and supercar have changed their meaning. What was considered a supercar 20 years ago, is today only worthy of the sports car tag and we ‘blame’ mankind’s incessant need to go faster and faster for it.
In other words, as technology evolved and improved over time, carmakers were able to build lighter cars, better engines, and more aerodynamic body kits. That’s how we got a whole new breed of go-fast demons: the hypercar (thanks, Bugatti!). But just how big of a difference is there between a modern-day sports car and a supercar? Well, this question has found its answer as an Alfa Romeo 4C went against the likes of Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 600LT.
The Hennessey C7 Corvette ZR1 HPE 1200 Can Kick the Hell Out of a McLaren 720S
The McLaren 720S was built with one thing and mind and one thing only. And that’s blistering performance through a combination of power and lightness. The C7 Corvette ZR1 is a nod to the same creed, but it lacks the McLaren’s innate ability to dance around a twisty circuit. While it’s obviously not as light on its feet like the Macca, this particular ZR1 got a helping hand from America’s controversial tuner Hennessey. The helping hand is the HPE 1200 upgrade, one that turned the Corvette into a McLaren 720S squasher. Or dit it?
Every now and again we run across some crazy footage of people doing crazy or amazing things with their cars. In this case, it’s both. What you’re about to witness is a rolling start drag race between what looks like a stock McLaren MP4-12C and a modified, second-generation Cadillac CTS-V.
While we don’t have any information on the race nor its participants, the Caddy’s supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8 is obviously massaged into making a touch more than its stock 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque. Aftermarket wheels and tires further tip off the Caddy’s hidden potential.
The drag race starts off innocently enough with both cars rolling to the start line. At that point, it’s all gas. The GM small-block’s supercharger whines like a baby at midnight as the Caddy crosses the line ahead of the 616-horsepower, $239,400-McLaren supercar.
This race just goes to show you; a little know-how, some good aftermarket parts, and a solid project car can become something unbelievable.
The guys over Drag Times magazine had the chance to take a McLaren MP4-12C supercar to the Palm Beach International Raceway for some quarter-mile testing. The car tested was a 2013 model year that delivers a total of 616 horsepower and comes equipped with reprogrammed transmission logic.
The model also features carbon-ceramic brakes, a sport exhaust system and super-light wheels, which help deliver a total weight of just 3,118 pounds when fuel tank was just a quarter full. All these updates dropped a weight-to-power ratio to 5.06 pounds per horsepower.
The results were pretty amazing, as the 12C ran the 1/4-mile in 10.55 seconds at a speed of 134.56 mph. These numbers make the MP4-12C faster than the Lamborghini Aventador, but also the second fastest-stock production car in the world, after the Bugatti Veyron. We are just waiting for some official confirmations from McLaren before getting too excited.
