April Fool’s Round-Up: Automakers Go All-Out With The Pranks
April Fool’s Day has come and gone, and as you might have expected, a number of automakers spent the occasion trying to pull a fast one on all of us. Some of them worked while others didn’t. Some got us thinking if the pranks were real - or we wish they were real - while others flamed out because they were too obvious from the very beginning. Still, it was a good day to check out what kind of absurdity we had coming our way. If you missed out on all the April Fool’s pranks that these auto brands came out with, well, we got you, fam.
McLaren F1 GTR Is More Than Just a Supercar, It’s Also a Christmas Tree Transporter
The McLaren F1 GTR is one of the most eye-catching supercars of all time. It’s a magnet for attention, and it’s capable of unfiltered viciousness on the race track. Apparently, it also makes for a handy car during the holiday season, as the owner of the UK’s most recognizable F1 GTR, Andy74b on Instagram, showed us in a recent video.
A McLaren Story That Makes Us Hate Insurance Companies Even More
This might be the oddest tale of destruction to ever happen to a McLaren. A donkey caused a whopping $40,221 in damage to a McLaren 650S Spider after its owner parked beside the donkey’s enclosure. The German police report theorizes the orange 650S looked like a giant carrot to the donkey, who proceeded to eat part of the carbon fiber body near the bumper, scratching the orange paint in the process. The owner, Markus Zahn, says he returned to his McLaren and got inside before seeing the donkey in his rearview mirror.
Adding insult to injury, Zahn’s insurance company refused to fully cover the repair costs, sending Zahn an invoice for $7,052. Though he owned a $288,000 exotic supercar and likely could have easily paid the bill, Zahn decided to sue the donkey’s owner for the cost. Not surprisingly, the donkey’s owner, who named the barnyard animal Vitus, refused to pay the expense. Now a year later, a German court finally heard the case and ruled in favor of Zahn. That left the donkey’s owner with a repair bill of $7,052.
While it seems petty of Zahn to saddle the arguably innocent donkey’s owner with a bill he could easily pay, the real ass of this situation is the insurance company. Undoubtedly, Zahn pays big money to keep his prized McLaren and his fat bank account safe from harm, but when it came time to actually file a claim, the insurance company didn’t feel it was on the hook for the full repair bill, despite Zahn having full coverage. I’m sure the insurance company would complain if Zahn flippantly decided he didn’t want to pay the full amount of his monthly premiums. Regardless of the $40,221 repair cost, the insurance company should have paid up. That’s what insurance is for. Its double standards corporations often hold that makes the public so distrusting.

We’ve taken our cars to car wash stations countless of times and yet something like this has never happened to us. But some folks are just lucky, especially if they find themselves as unwitting participants in a new Mobil One stunt ad.
A handful of British drivers decided to have their cars washed on a rather innocuous day. Nothing too special, right?
But that’s when things took a strange turn. Instead of being greeted by the usual mechanical car wash equipment, these drivers found McLaren’s pit crew, armed and ready to give their rides the spic-and-span treatment.
But the real highlight was McLaren driver Jenson Button pulling up from behind and acting like he was waiting for his turn to get his MP-29 race car washed. If this happened in the U.S. with Button, it likely wouldn’t have gotten the same kind of reaction.
But seeing as this was the UK where Button’s a pretty big deal, you can understand why people were taken aback seeing him while his pit crew washed their cars. We’d be surprised too, and we probably would’ve asked him for a selfie as well.
McLaren has proved to be one of the more marketing savvy teams in the F1 grid these days.
Their latest venture, an animation short starring Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, is another home run in our books.
Titled "Tooned," the animated short series made its debut at the British Grand Prix on Sky Sports F1 last weekend. In this episode, Button, Hamilton, and Professor M - think McLaren’s version of a quirky scientist - all go to McLaren’s underground testing circuit to give the new McLaren F1 car a testing shakedown.
Button proceeds to win the coin toss to get first dibs on the car, but true to Hamilton’s always competitive nature, he somehow commandeers a rocket-powered F1 prototype to race Button in what turned out to be an "explosive" race. Not content with the finish, the two then proceed to use the "super-soft" tires to bound their way to the finish line, much to the chagrin of the clearly perturbed Professor M.

For those of you who think that a Formula One mechanic’s job isn’t all that important, you might want to spend the next three minutes watching this hilarious video of McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton - two world champions, no less - trying to assemble a McLaren F1 car without the help of their trusty mechanics. Sound easy? Guess again.
How ironic is it that the two men tasked to race these cars can’t even get to finish assembling them without a few minor mishaps and a number of calls to their mechanics asking for some pointers. The video is a commercial done by the team’s principal sponsor, Vodafone, to show just how important it is to establish a good network, not just between members of the team, but apparently, with members of the sponsors as well.
For what it’s worth, though, it’s a pretty funny video to watch because it sure looks like these two race car drivers are in over their heads and have no clue as to how to assemble the cars they drive. Sure, they managed to piece everything together, but Lord knows if they did it exactly the way they should.
