2019 McLaren 720S GT3
Launched in 2014, the McLaren Super Series included a batch of spectacular sports cars. Alongside the base 650S model, the British firm also launched the higher performance 675LT and the race-spec 650S GT3. Light, fast, and packed with the latest technology, the Super Series became McLaren’s most successful car. However, the British carmaker decided to replace it after only three years on the market. Its successor is called the 720S and boasts improvements in just about any department. It’s been six months since the 720S was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and McLaren announced that a race-spec GT3 version is also underway.
The new 720S GT3 will replace the 650S GT3, a vehicle that scored titles in all major motorsport series, including the Asian Le Mans Series, Australian GT championship, the Bathurst 12 Hour, Blancpain Endurance Cup and Pirelli World Challenge. But it won’t happen right away. Much like the 570S GT4, the 720S GT3 will have a trial season in 2018 and will completely replace the 650S in 2019, when it will be launched for customer teams.
In addition to the new race car, McLaren also announced plans to introduce a new racing program and a one-make GT series for customers. It’s also planning to appoint a network of motorsport retailers which will sell road and track products alongside each other. But more about all of this below.
In 1992, McLaren took the supercar market by surprise with a vehicle that was unlike any other produced until then: the F1. Not only lighter and more powerful than anything else in dealerships at the time, the F1 was also the first production car to feature a carbon-fiber monocoque and a center-mounted driver’s seat, among many other unique features and innovations. What’s more, it became the world’s fastest production car at 240.1 mph, smashing the previous record by a whopping 27.8 mph.
What the world didn’t know then was that the F1 would also spawn a successful race car.
Although McLaren had used many racing technologies and designs for the F1, Gordon Murray’s goal was to build "the ultimate road car." McLaren had no intention to take it racing, but many customers and racing teams started seeing the potential in the F1 as soon as the first cars had hit the roads. Ray Bellm and Thomas Bscher were among those who turned to Gordon Murray and Ron Dennis in an attempt to convince them to build racing versions for the BPR Global GT Series.
McLaren agreed to build F1s for the track if Bellm would bring him at least three customers for such a car. A few months later, the three customers and Dennis met to sign the contract and the F1 GTR project was born, which would give McLaren its first outright win at Le Mans.

2016 McLaren 570S GT4
In 2015, McLaren debuted the new Sports Series, a family of sports cars slotted below the Super Series and aimed at the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo. Having already launched three models, the 570S, 540C, and 570GT, the Brits are now pushing the Sports Series into motorsport territory with a track-only version called the 570S GT4.
As the name suggests, the race-bred coupe was developed to GT4 specifications, which makes it eligible for an array of European racing championships, including the GT4 European series. Created in conjunction with McLaren GT, the brand’s motorsports division, and GT racing specialists CRS GT Limited, the 570S GT4 will be raced in the 2016 season of the British GT championship. One example will be run by Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse before the car is homologated for GT4-spec championships globally and sold to customers for the 2017 season.
"The launch of the Sports Series has broadened McLaren to a new audience, introducing technologies to the sports car market and to a new group of customers. The 570S GT4 is doing the same in the motorsport world, and will bring the opportunity to own and race a McLaren -– previously limited to a very small number of people –- to a much wider group," said Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive.
Along with the new race car, McLaren also announced that it has appointed Ansar Ali as Motorsport Director. Former CEO of Caterham Cars and current chief of Zeos Cars, Ali will be responsible for on-going strategy and management of McLaren’s motorsport activities.

McLaren has had a rough 2015 Formula One season, with its new Honda power unit not living up to expectations. Having finished the season next to last in the constructors’ championship standings, 2016 can only be an improvement for the Brits. But, despite not being able to win a single race in 2015, McLaren made tremendous progress toward the end of the season and even designed a brand-new Formula One car, the MP4-X.
Unfortunately, the MP4-X isn’t the company’s race car for 2016, but a conceptual vision for the future of Formula One. I say unfortunately only because we won’t get to see it on the race track anytime soon; otherwise, this concept car is as cool and futuristic as they get. Not only because it looks as if it came from the future, but because it packs an enormous amount of technology that’s likely to become the norm in a few years.
“With the futuristic McLaren MP4-X concept race car, we wanted to peer into the future and imagine the art of the possible. We have combined a number of F1’s key ingredients – speed, excitement and performance, with the sport’s emerging narratives - such as enclosed cockpits to enhance driver safety, and hybrid power technologies,” said John Allert, Group Brand Director of McLaren Technology.

The brand-new McLaren 650S was introduced at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show as a replacement for the MP4-12C. The sports car debuted in Coupe and Roadster body styles with 640 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque on tap. Powered by the same twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 seen across the entire McLaren lineup, the 650S comes to the market as a competitor for the Ferrari 458 and the Lamborghini Huracan. Coming into 2015, the British sports car is also getting a track suit with a 650S GT3 label on it.
Developed as a successor to the highly acclaimed 12C GT3, the 650S will replace its forerunner in the Blancplain Endurance Series starting next year. Additionally, the new race car will get to showcase its skills in various GT races around the world hoping to match the success of its predecessor. Although it is essentially an updated 12C GT3, the 650S GT3 carries an array of newly-developed racing parts, which are supposed to make it faster and more agile on the track. Only time will tell if the 650S is worthy of the GT3 moniker, but, until then, let’s have a look at the technology behind it.

Much like Ferrari, the oldest surviving and the most successful team in the history of Formula One, McLaren started as a race-car manufacturer long before it began making road cars. Founded in 1963 as Bruce McLaren Motor Racing, the team joined F1 as a works entry in 1966. It has since competed in every single season of the series as of 2014, winning eight constructor’s championships and no fewer than 182 wins. Statistically, McLaren is second only to Ferrari when it comes to race starts, total wins, podium finishes, pole positions, fastest laps, and championship points, making it one of the most prominent names in the single-seat auto racing scene. Despite this, the British have not won the constructor’s title since 1998, but scoring podium finishes on 12 occasions through 2012. Both 2013 and 2014 were rather disappointing, with McLaren finishing fifth without scoring a single win. This bitter drought could come to an end in 2015, when McLaren tackles the F1 season with a brand-new chassis and an all-new hybrid powertrain.
While all engine manufacturers developed new power units for the 2014 season, McLaren had to wait until 2015 to benefit from Honda’s return to the sport as a powerplant supplier after a ten-year hiatus. The new alliance is of great historic importance, as it reunites the entities that won four back-to-back world championships between 1988 and 1991. It all began at the end of the iconic Turbo Era and continued well into the 3.5-liter, naturally aspirated engine period, when McLaren had two of the greatest drivers in history: Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
The partnership between McLaren and Honda ended in 1992, when Honda retired only to return with BAR and Jordan between 2000 and 2005. Meanwhile, McLaren continued with Ford and Peugeot engines for two seasons before turning to Mercedes for a partnership that lasted two decades. Come 2015, McLaren hopes to win its first championship in 16 years using power from Honda’s first F1 engine since 2005. The hybrid powerplant was developed alongside a new single-seater, the MP4-30, with refined aerodynamics, a new nose-box solution and revised livery. Available in both coupe and roadster guises, the sports car rolled off the assembly line with the proven, twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 behind its seats. Motivated by no less than 640 horses and 500 pound-feet of twist, the 650S quickly became the fastest vehicle in its segment, outgunning sports cars wearing both Ferrari and Lamborghini badges. Coming into 2015, the Brits are knighting the 650S a full-time race car by means of a GT3 iteration for the Blancplain Endurance Series and a Sprint racer. Essentially a successor to the 12C GT Sprint, the 650S Sprint is also a track-only model.

Blending technology from both, the 650S Sprint offers the plain looks of the street-legal car spiced up by racing upgrades and a FIA-approved interior. The 2014 Pirelli World Challenge season is set to open later this month, and at least one team (that’s you, K-PAX Racing) is heading to the season with a supercar contender in the form of the McLaren 12C GT3.
For a team that has established a reputation as one of the series’ most accomplished outfits, K-PAX Racing couldn’t have found a more suitable race car to have in in its garage when the 16-race season begins with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 28th through 30th.
The blue-and-gold livery used on the 12C GT3s is all about identifying the cars to K-PAX Racing, and to be honest, they look really good in those colors.
More importantly, this year marks the return of McLaren to North American sports car racing — the first time, the company has a car in a North American race in the past 30 years.
“Ever since our 2007 debut in the World Challenge, we’ve run K-PAX Racing like a business. We expect to go fast and we expect to look sharp — from our cars and pit crew to our tents and trailers,” K-PAX team owner Jim Haughey said.
Evidently, they have the race cars to be serious contenders this season. So get ready; K-PAX Racing’s 12C GT3 is coming to take some names at the Pirelli World Challenge.

As previously announced the 2014 Formula 1 racing season comes with a series of important changes, including the replacement of the old V-8 with a new, turbocharged V-6 engine. One of the first companies to comply with these requirements is McLaren with its new MP4-29 — the car that will be raced during the 2014 Formula 1 season.
The MP4-29 race car is powered by a turbocharged, 1.6-liter, V-6 engine paired with an advanced Energy Recovery System (ERS) that includes two electric motor-generators. The V-6 engine delivers a total of 600 horsepower, while the ERS system adds another 161 horsepower.
Other changes announced by McLaren include new front wings that were narrowed by 150 mm (5.90 inches) and an updated lower beam-wing that will improve downforce.
The new MP4-29 be driven through the entire racing season by Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen. McLaren will being testing in Jerez, Spain on January 28th, before the official racing debut later in March.

McLaren currently offers two racing versions of its 12C sports car: the 12C GT3 and the 12C GT Can-Am Edition. McLaren specially designed the 12C GT3 version for competitions like the FIA Group GT3 where it obtained its first victory at the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship season.
McLaren has now decided to expand the 12C lineup even further with the addition of a new 12C GT Sprint edition. The new model will make its world debut during this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and McLaren will limit it to only 20 units. Before you get too excited, we have to let you know that the new 12C Sprint edition is a track-only model.
McLaren GT is developing the model and will base it on the road-going 12C, but it will feature some new systems and an optimized aerodynamic package.
Updated 10/1/2013: McLaren has released some additional information, including the £195,000 (about $316,150 at the current exchange rates) base price for the 12C GT Sprint. The Brittish maker also revealed a few more images of the upcoming supercar.

Just last week, Ferrari unveiled the first teaser for their upcoming2013 Formula One Race Car and now it’s time for McLaren to do the same.
Instead of an image, McLaren has unveiled a teaser video of their Formula 1 racecar set to be unveiled on January 31st. The car will be named McLaren Mercedes MP4-28 and it will be driven by Jensen Button and new driver, Sergio Perez.
What we do know about the car is that it will keep the same 2.4-liter V-8 engine as previous version. In fact, 2013 will be the last year that this type of engine will be used, as starting in the 2014 racing season, it will be replaced by a 1.6-liter turbocharged V-6 engine.
The 2013 racing season will be a pretty interesting one for McLaren. First they will celebrate their 50th anniversary. And second, this is the first year that Lewis Hamilton will not be joining their team, as he has moved onto Mercedes.
We’ll update you with all of the official details on the McLaren MP4-28 F1 car once all of the details are released.
The MP4-12C GT3 scored some impressive results during the 2012 racing season: 19 victories and an additional 19 podium finishes from a total of 98 race events it competed in. So it’s no wonder why McLaren decided to offer an updated version of the GT3 for the 2013 racing season. For the first time ever, the 2013 MP4-12C GT3 will be available for global competition. Teams interested can have it for a total of £325,000 - about $520,000 at the current exchange rates.
For the 2013 racing season, the Mp4-12C GT3 is updated to improve drivability, reliability and efficiency. Updates include a revised aerodynamics package, an upgraded ECU with a revised electrical system and alternative dampers. Customers interested can also order this package as an update for the 2012 racing version.

The British automaker has released a one-off, race concept that will blow your socks off. The car is called the 12C Can-Am Edition and is based on the MP4-12C GT3 race car. The only difference is that the 12C Can-Am Edition is far and away more powerful than its GT3 cousin.
Set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance organized in California, the 12C Can-Am Edition is what happens when you have an automaker as devoted to the meticulous and obsessive pursuit of performance like McLaren put their thinking hats and build a car that’s just way too cool for words.
It’s been dressed in the company’s now iconic McLaren Orange paint scheme, further adding a touch of Woking to its overall appeal. Add that to a boat load of aerodynamic modifications combined with enhanced performance capabilities and it’s easy to surmise exactly why McLaren is taking pride in this one-off race concept.

McLaren is making its way back into the GT sports car racing scene with a limited number of GT3 racing cars based on the MP4-12C sports car. These models will be designed and developed by McLaren and CRS Racing, and should make their first racing debut in the 2012 European FIA GT3 Series.
"The 12C’s architecture and design was always aimed at high-performance and ease of maintenance - two key criteria for potential customers. Combine that with the vast amount of racing experience in our automotive team, and CRS Racing’s specialist development experience, and the 12C GT3 should be an exciting proposition for the top teams planning to race in GT3 from 2012."
McLaren is confident that the MP4-12C’s revolutionary lightweight one-piece moulded carbon chassis, high levels of downforce and aerodynamic performance, and focus on form and function make it an obvious choice to bring back racing success to the McLaren name. The last win McLaren had was in the McLaren F1 GTR when it won the Lemans Series 15 years ago. The MP4-12C GT3 will be the first McLaren car built for FIA GT series racing since the McLaren F1 GTR finished production in 1997.
UPDATE 07/20/2012: McLaren will line-up nine examples of the stunning 12C GT3 on the grid of the famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps next weekend, 27-29 July to contest the Total 24 Hours of Spa. The gruelling 24-hour race is the headline event in the 2012 Blancpain Endurance Series, and one of the most demanding events on the motorsport calendar.
It’s a car that will more than likely just take up some space in someone’s garage, but it could still fetch millions at an auction the same way one of its contemporaries did just over a year ago.
The piece of automotive racing history that we’re talking about is the Gulf Team Davidoff McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, and should you have millions of dollars in your piggy bank, you’ll be happy to know that the car is headed to the upcoming Pebble Beach Auction in August 2012 in Carmel Valley, California.
Judging by the level of interest surrounding this car, the sky is really the limit on how much it’s going to go for at the auction. Combine that with the fact that a similar make and model was sold last year for $3.9 million, and you have a rare racing car that’s going to sell for a lot of zeroes.
This particular F1 GTR Longtail also happens to have an interesting history behind it. It was originally built as chassis number 027R, but ultimately ended up as a spare car - chassis 028R - after sustaining damage during one of its transports. In the end, the car wound racing in a number of racing events, highlighted by its participation during the 1997 FIA GT season.
Should you be interested in owning a true hard-to-find racer, you better break open that piggy bank because you’re going to have to pay a fortune for the chance to show off the car to your buddies.

McLaren has unveiled their new MP4-27 Formula 1 Race Car that will be used during the 2012 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. This year, the car will be driven by the two world champions: Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.
The new MP4-27 is a natural evolution of last year’s six-race-winning car, but it has received a number of modifications in order to comply with the new FIA regulations. The 2012 chassis has been substantially revised from the ground-up, with all major systems updated or re-designed for the new season. The racing car has also received more tightly waisted rear bodywork, developed to improve flow to the rear of the car, and a revised cooling system, which re-directs the gearbox oil-cooler. The U-shaped sidepods from last year’s model have also been re-designed due to the new exhaust regulations.
The McLaren MP4-27 Formula 1 Race Car will begin testing on Tuesday February 7th, 2012 at Spain’s Circuito de Jerez with Jenson Button behind the wheel.
After an eventful 2010 year that saw their founder kidnapped and killed in South Africa, 2011 has been a relatively quiet year for German tuning company, Gemballa.
The new brass over at Gemballa is determined to turn over a new leaf and investor, Steffen Korbach, is initiating a new chapter in the company’s history by starting a new Gemballa racing team that hopes to begin competing in the 2012 motor racing season. With a new team in hand, Korbach wanted a car that can be competitive from the get-go and they seemed to have found it in a pair of McLaren MP4-12C GT3 models.
"We deliberately went for the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 for our motor sport commitment, because we think the car has enormous potential to be among the season’s leaders," Korbach said.
Powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found on the production version, the MP4-12C GT3 comes with a de-tuned output of only 500 horsepower at a limited 7,500rpm. The engine is then mounted to the car’s carbon fiber MonoCell chassis and tuned to racing specifications.
In addition to scoring a pair of MP4-12C GT3s, Korbach also tapped race vet, Sascha Bert, to serve as team manager with the names of prospective drivers scheduled to be announced soon.
UPDATE 12/27/12: The Gemballa Racing Team McLaren MP4-12C is now on sale for an "affordable" price of just €350,000, which is around $460,000 based on current exchange rates.
The McLaren F1 team unveiled their 2010 Formula One entry earlier today at their headquarters in Newbury, and almost as impressive as their new machine is the all English driver lineup with returning champion Lewis Hamilton and last year’s break out sensation Jensen Button leading the charge.
In accordance with the new sporting regulations for the 2010 season, the car has undergone some considerable changes, even if it appears to be quite the same to the untrained eye. Dubbed the MP4-25, the new race car features a radical aerodynamic overhaul and a significantly larger fuel tank to allow the team to run longer between pit stops and the championship winning McLaren design team has declared they are confident that they have explored every possible avenue in order to maximize the MP4-25’s on track performance. Powered by a Mercedes-Benz FO 108X V8 engine, the same power plant that brought McLaren and Lewis Hamilton the world title in 2008, tipping the scales at just under 210 pounds, the slightly heavier MP4-25 will make its first on track appearance in Valencia, Spain on February 1 along with many of the other F1 competitors for some pre season testing.

Not to be outdone by the Ferrari F60, McLaren revealed its new Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-24 Formula 1 car. The MP4-24 will start its publicly testing at the Autodromo do Algarve circuit in Portugal today.
2009 is the first year the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) gets implemented in F1 racing. The MP4-24’s KERS device has been developed in collaboration with McLaren and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines. The KERS device’s output puts out 60kW/400kJ, which equals an additional 80bhp for 6.66s per lap. This is the kind of gas/electric hybrid we can get behind.
