The McLaren GT was introduced in 2019, and we know for sure that the mule we see here is, in fact, a McLaren GT. Be that as it may, it was caught in a residential neighborhood in France by a friend of Topspeed, and it certainly raises a few questions. First, why is there a camouflaged McLaren GT cruising around France? Second, why was it parked outside a residential area? Third, why do the wheels have “Dyn Wheel” written all over them? Well, we think that McLaren might be testing its new V-6 hybrid drivetrain.

It’s no secret that McLaren is developing a follow-up hypercar to the P1. Internally, the model is called by its prototype designation, “BP23.” Externally, it could be called the McLaren GT, if a recent trademark filing by McLaren is to be believed. If the filing is accurate, it would put to bed any speculation on what the new hypercar is going to be called. I suppose we’re going to have to wait a little longer for the McLaren Hakkinen to arrive.

2020 McLaren SUV

A possible new direction for the British sports car icon

It wasn’t that long ago that the idea of a McLaren SUV was absurd, a pipe dream for the lunatic fringe that indulged in fevered fantasies about jacked-up sports cars tackling the great outdoors. These days, though, it actually makes a lot of sense. One of the best examples comes from Porsche, which unveiled the mid-size Cayenne back in 2002 and promptly destroyed all expectations by simply cleaning up in sales. So then – it would seem as though demand for a “traditional” sports car ebbs and flows, while the SUV segment continues to entice buyers across the board. No surprise then that a host of manufacturers best known churning out high-end sports cars is turning to the SUV body style as a reliable source of income. Some of the latest to jump on the bandwagon include Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Jaguar, and even Lamborghini. Could McLaren be next, and if so, what would a McLaren SUV look like? To find out, we drew up a rendering and did a little daydreaming in the following speculative review.

Before we go any further, it bears mentioning that McLaren has flat out denied any interest whatsoever in the business of building SUVs. Sports cars and supercars are its game, and it’s gonna take something big to change McLaren’s mind in the matter. At the same time, McLaren says it plans on building as many as 15 new models by 2022. So what if one of those was an SUV?

McLaren P13 Will Get GT-Trunked Version

Ever find yourself wishing for a McLaren with more trunk space? Well, that might be in the works, according to a report from Car & Driver. Supposedly, McLaren is working on several variants of the upcoming 2015 P13, including a “GT” that features a trunk area on the rear of the car.

A rear trunk is a pretty normal thing, but not for mid-engine supercars with V-8 powerplants. Sure, the Porsche Cayman has a boot, but its flat six-cylinder options are far more compact than the P13’s 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8. What’s more, the current McLarens’ rear ends have little free real estate due to cooling ducts, exhaust pipes, and the mechanics for the active rear wing.

C&D says their source is a well-informed McLaren insider who confirms the GT’s development. Additionally, McLaren believes it will be the best-selling iteration of the new P13.

The source also alluded to the automaker using some nifty engineering in order to keep the luggage compartment from becoming hot from its twin-turbocharged neighbor. Also included in the GT’s design will be a concave rear window similar to the one found on the Ferrari 206 GT Dino of the 1960s.

Though the GT version of the P13 is making headlines, the standard coupe and a drop-top Spider version will also be available. All P13 variants will include the same carbon-fiber monocell construction and come powered by the same 3.8-liter V-8 as found in the 12C, 650S, and P1 — though the engine will be detuned to somewhere between 450 and 470 horsepower.
