2019 McLaren 720S Spider by MSO
The McLaren 720S Spider is the roofless version of one of the most revered models in McLaren’s Super Series. McLaren’s Special Operations division (MSO) brought a one-off 720S Spider to the Geneva Motor Show to show off the kind of modifications possible with a run-of-the-mill 720S Spider. The result is a tri-color beast with tons of exposed carbon fiber.
Are we getting to the point when personalization has gone too far? Henry Ford used to say that you could have any color on your Ford Model T as long as the color was black. Now, every luxury manufacturer brags about its "nearly infinite" choices, and depending on how deep are your pockets, each is willing to open before you a whole world of options. The MSO division offers multiple worlds, one for each of McLaren’s models, and the 720S Spider has just joined this exclusive group at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Geneva Motor Show is always overpopulated with a number of supercars each year, and in 2014, that is exactly where the McLaren P1 made its long-awaited debut as the successor to the McLaren F1. Despite strong competition from models like the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Lamborghini Veneno, all 375 planned production models had been spoken for by the end of 2013. And, there is a good reason for it, with one of them being showcased in the video you’re about to watch.
In the video, you’ll see a number of different cars from Porsche to Lamborghini lined up on the landing strip, but this video – at least the last half of it – is focused around the P1. At first, I thought all the cars were going to make a break for the sound barrier, and that would have been a pretty gnarly race, but instead we get to see the P1 doing what it does best – going fast.
The video itself has some awesome sound effects and some quality music playing in the background, but the coolest part is the in-cabin view of the P1 pushing past the 200 mph barrier. The title of the video says the P1 hits 205 mph, but in reality, we see that speedo tick up to 207 at the last second. Just wait until you see the aerial view of the P1 on its sprint – it looks like a rocket as it barrels down the track. Let us know what you think and enjoy the video!
When you’re driving a McLaren 650S there’s no such thing as too much track action. Be it the Nurburgring, Silverstone or Laguna Seca, McLaren’s new sports car is in its natural environment.
Being brand-new, the 650S didn’t get too much track action up until now, save for the enduring testing session it was subjected to during development. But that will soon change as customers will start receiving their cars and, hopefully, they won’t be keeping them in air-conditioned garages.
Deliveries are still a few months off, but we’re happy to report that the folks over at Sport Auto got their hands on a McLaren 650S Spider and took it straight to the Hockenheim track, the other famous German racing course.
Their track test obviously included a full lap on the Formula One circuit, but they also did a top-speed trial. And this is where thing got more than interesting, as the 650S Spider managed to overcome its official top speed, which is rated at 204 mph.
Pushed to the very limit in its seventh gear and at about 7,500 rpm, the sports car reached 331 km/h, which is about 205.6 miles per hour. Sure, the gap is rather tiny, but it’s still something worth knowing and, more importantly, watching.
Initial rumors on the upcoming McLaren F1 successor stated that it would be powered by the same 3.8-liter V8 engine found in the MP4-12C, but modified to deliver an impressive 800 HP. Now, Ferrari’s new Enzo is rumored to deliver somewhere around 1,000 HP, so it would only make sense that the F1 would deliver somewhere around the same power, and that is exactly what new reports are stating.
At the recently concluded Pebble Beach Concours, a very limited number of McLaren enthusiasts had the chance to see the first images of the new supercar - known as the P12. Shortly after this viewing, rumors began floating around that the future F1 successor would produce 1,000 HP. This new output would come from the MP4-12C’s 3.8 liter V8 engine delivering a total of 803 HP, in addition to the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) that would tack on another 160 HP, bringing the final output to 963 HP.
The 0 to 60 mph sprint is rumored to be made in 2.8 seconds, which is a little disappointing, as is the top speed which lands in at just 239 mph. For a sticker price of $1,390,000, we definitely would have expected more.

If you’ve ever been to a tire shop for four brand-spankin’-new tires, you can typically expect to sit around for at least an hour. If you show up on a Saturday, you had better just drop off your car and come back in three or four hours. That is, of course, unless you are F1 driver Jenson Button.
At the German Grand Prix on Sunday, Button was in 3rd place and pulled into the pits for a new set of tires, which you can typically expect to lose at least one position when doing. Button, on the other hand, pulled in and didn’t even lose a single position. It’s not because the car trailing him was so far behind, but rather because his pit crew was ridiculously fast. They lifted the car, removed four tires and rims, and installed four new tires and rims in 2.31 seconds.
That’s not only insanely fast, but it is also a new world record. One YouTube user managed to get a shot of the record-breaking pit stop and posted it for all of us to see. Literally, if you blink, you’ll miss almost everything.

Acceleration is one of the key components which create a supercar. Getting that perfect launch requires a combination of an extensive list of factors, namely finding a car with perfectly suited horsepower and torque figures. Finding a supercar with enough grip and a fast enough transmission to whip through the gears is also extremely important in getting off the line and continuing through to the quarter mile.
In the latest episode of Head2Head on the Motor Trend YouTube channel, they pitted the latest generation of carbon fiber constructed supercars against the all-conquering Bugatti Veyron over the quarter mile to see just how close the competition has come and if the Veyron can finally be knocked off its seemingly everlasting pedestal.
Motor Trend gathered the Lexus LFA, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, the McLaren MP4-12C, and a beautiful blue Bugatti Veyron Grandsport and took them to an abandoned runway in the depths of the U.S. They then conducted the review through two knockout rounds in order to find the Veyron’s closest competitor before pitting the remaining car against the Veyron.
So who won, you ask?
Well, we won’t ruin that for you as this video is definitely worth the 7 minutes it lasts.
Let’s begin here by saying that the Brabus Mercedes-McLaren SLR Roadster is one of the most awesome cars ever manufactured. A 5.5-liter supercharged V-8 engine pumps out 650 horses gets this machine up to a top speed of 211 mph. Toss in just the sheer awesomness that it’s a Mercedes too, and few can compete.
As much as we love these cars, some of their owners take the privileged to drive one a little too far. We understand and even agree that these cars need their legs stretched out every now and again, but there is a time and place for it. The very last place to stretch out the legs on a 650-horsepower monster is a parking garage.
Well, this outstanding citizen decides to take his (or someone’s) $1 million Mercedes in excess of 90 mph through a parking garage. That’s right, I wouldn’t do half of the top speed of a Geo Metro through a parking garage and this guy is halfway there on a 650-horsepower supercar.
What’s worse is the annoying chucklehead in the passenger’s seat is just laughin’ away like he’s watching a young Jim Carrey movie. Then adding insult to injury, a dinging alarm goes off. What’s that, the a-hole alarm maybe? No, that’s the seatbelt alarm; these guys are doing this idiotic stuff without seatbelts on…
Didn’t these guys think that maybe a kid could come running out from between a few cars? Maybe a person might decide he wants to pull his car out of one of the parking spaces. Really, what exactly goes through the heads of these people before they do things like this?
Ugh, okay enough of my fatherly ranting. Check out the above video to see for yourself. We can say that the in-car audio from the 5.5-liter V-8 is phenomenal, but the idiocy of the two squash-for-brains guys in the car seriously outweighs the impressiveness of the car.
Going through all of the glorious supercars of 2011 was no easy task, especially since it felt like every random country of the world was developing their own supercar. Each vehicle we came across deserved to have their time to shine on the list for best supercar of 2011, but as time went on, it was clear which ones stood out above all of the rest.
A couple of the supercars on the list shouldn’t surprise anyone, especially since they were created by one of the top supercar makers in the world. Then there are the relative newbies to the group that have received enough recognition to warrant praise from the average car enthusiast, but the final vehicle would probably not be recognized by many and its home country may actually cause ridicule to ensue. The end result, however, was enough to give it a spot on our list.

The Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C are currently natural born enemies in the sports car segment. Both models have had problems at the beginning - the Ferrari was recalled last year and the McLaren recently had to stop production due to safety concerns - but all that aside, they are both fantastically superior machines with killer engines to exploit.
There will always be a competitive vein connecting these two sports cars which is why a video displaying both of their strengths is always a must see. This video shows a black Ferrari 458 Italia chasing a MP4-12C into a tunnel. If you want to see the beautiful curves of both models, find another video. But if you want to hear the glorious and thunderous sound escaping the exhausts, turn the volume up.
The Ferrari 458 Italia is powered by a 4,499 cc V8 engine that delivers a total of 570 HP at 9,000 rpm and a peak torque of 398 lb-ft at 6000 rpm. The engine is mated to a F1 dual-clutch gearbox and sprints the sports car from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.4 seconds while top speed goes up to an impressive 201 mph.
The McLaren MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 weighing only 439 lbs. The engine produces 592hp at 7,000rpm and 443 lb-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm. It will reach 60mph in 3.3 seconds and an even faster 3.1 seconds with the optional high-performance tire option. The new team made sure the top speed of the 12C would be formidable topping out at 205mph.
So which supercar would you prefer, Italian or British?
The cheetah may reign supreme as the fastest animal on land, but when you take into account the air above and the water below, the title of fastest animal on the planet belongs to the Peregrine Falcon.
When considering the broad scope of the fastest animal on the planet, the Top 10 list would probably consist mostly of birds, but in fairness to the land and water-based creatures, we’re going to hold the Peregrine Falcon and other high-speed birdies in a different category altogether. You see, when measuring the speed of birds based on traveling speed measured in level flying, the Peregrine Falcon isn’t the king of the air. Actually, it doesn’t even crack the Top 10. The title for fastest bird in this kind of flight goes to the Spine-Tailed Swift, which can hit a top level flying speed of 106 mph. Compare that to the Peregrine Falcon, which can hit a top speed of just about 60 mph in level flight - impressive in its own right, but not Top 10 material - and the Spine-Tailed Swift blows it out of the water.
