German car dealership Hollauto is now selling a new G500 just days after the SUV was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. How exactly did the dealer get its hands on one so quickly? It didn’t because it’s actually selling a build slot for an already commissioned example.

And it remained one of my favorite SUVs for decades. The boxy hauler was significantly revised in 1990, and it remained largely unchanged since then, despite technology and drivetrain upgrades. Almost three decades later and Mercedes launched the third-generation G-Class. And the Germans almost ruined it.

A taste of the G-Wagen’s long and winning heritage

The Mercedes-Benz booth at the 2018 North American International Auto Show proved to be a busy place thanks to the all-new 2019 G-Class. Part of the fun was historic G-Class vehicles from Mercedes’ storied past. One of them was this, the 1983 Mercedes 280 GE built to run the Paris–Dakar Rally. Its driver was Jacky Ickx and co-driver Claude Brasseur. The duo battled the 6,200 miles over grueling, off-road terrain between Paris, France and Dakar, Senegal – a town on the westernmost tip of Africa.

The G-Wagen was mostly stock but came with a few extras to help win the rally. Meatier all-terrain tires, an off-road bumper, and extra lights were added, while the rear glass was painted over with sponsor logos. A large spoiler hangs off the G-Wagen’s rear, perhaps helping control dust.

The win proved extremely important for Mercedes. The G-Wagen was only four years old in 1983 and the Dakar Rally was only five. Both Mercedes and the rally have become legendary over the decades and into modern times. The 1983 race was also the first and only time an automaker to win the Dakar overall with two vehicle classes. Mercedes other contender was a 1936 AK-series medium-duty truck.

Mercedes-Benz had a big showing at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this year surrounding its all-new 2019 G-Class SUV. This tried and true vehicle has a long history of extreme service, both in military and civilian service. One of the most recent events was accomplished by the famous explorer, Mike Horn, whose 2016 Pole2Pole expedition took him around the globe via the north and south poles. The journey traced a route from Europe to Africa, the Antarctic, Oceania, Asia, the Arctic, North America, and back to Europe.

Horn, a Mercedes-Benz Ambassador, used the outgoing G-Wagen to complete the on-land portion of his epic trip. The rest was done on his boat, the Pangaea, on snow skis, and by foot.

The G-Wagen, a G500, needed only minimal changes to endure the trip. It rolls on BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM tires on stock Mercedes wheels. A matching full-size spare tire replaces the stock wheel on the tailgate. A roof basket with a ladder added storage and a spot for mounting the two off-road lights. Beyond that, the G500 is bone stock, including the 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 and its 415 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Of course, the G500’s stock locking differentials certainly helped. The G-Wagen has three lockers, in fact, one up front, one in back, and in the center transfer case.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Blitzkriegs Detroit!

An official look at the first new G-Class in four decades

Mercedes-Benz has finally debuted the all-new G-Class SUV at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. While Mercedes had already released the official information on the G-Class just prior to the show, this is our first time getting a hands-on look at the new icon.

The new G-Class is longer, wider, and of course, more luxurious than the outgoing model. The interior borrows some of the design and high-tech features from the E-Class and S-Class sedans, meaning the G will finally be worth its €107,040.50 ($131,470) asking price. Outside, the G-Class wears a familiar aesthetic that keeps the vehicle grounded in its heritage. It’s like the Jeep Wrangler – the designers couldn’t change it beyond recognition.

The G-Class also retains is amazing off-road capability. In fact, Mercedes even increased the G’s performance. A new “G-Mode” is like a silver bullet button that puts the SUV’s systems into the right settings for tackling treacherous terrain. The front, center, and rear locking differentials, combined with different settings for the traction control, throttle response, and ABS are all included.

Initially, power comes from a 4.0-liter V-8 making 422 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque from 2,000 to 4,750 rpm. More engines are expected in the future. A nine-speed automatic comes standard. Mercedes says the 2019 G-Class will achieve 21.2 mpg combined. And as mentioned, the price starts around $131,470 here in the U.S. and will go on sale starting in June in Europe with North America to follow.

We Already Know What it Looks Like, But Mercedes is Teasing the Next-Gen G-Class SUV Anyway

You don’t mess with a design that’s as iconic as the one the G-Class has

Give Mercedes-Benz credit for this: no amount of leaked images will spoil it by teasing the upcoming Mercedes G-Class. We’ve already seen the all-weather SUV running roughshod in a snowy landscape. Now, it’s taking its marauding madness to the sand dunes with a new teaser photo that shows next-to-nothing except for a peek at the front section of the SUV.

The lack of identifiable body bits doesn’t really matter anymore because the aforementioned leaked photos gave the jig up. We know that the new G-Class will keep its iconic look. With the exception of a few bits and pieces, the new G-Class will remain identifiable to anybody who sees it. That’s not to say that the SUV will be completely the same. Looks aside, this is a new model that’s packing plenty of new tech features and the latest in state-of-the-art technology. The interior, in particular, boasts a reconfigured layout and a new digital instrument cluster, among other niceties.

We’ll leave the technical details for Mercedes to reveal, but the new G-Class is shaping up to be another German masterclass in robust off-roading. The SUV is scheduled to make its debut at the North American Auto Show in Detroit next week. Before that, a third and final teaser will be unveiled on January 14. It doesn’t matter now since we already know what the G-Class looks like, but in keeping with the theme of the first two teaser photos, we’re guessing that this one takes place in a jungle. Perhaps even outer space? No, that’d be too much.

Less than 24 hours ago, Mercedes-Benz released photos of the all-new, 2019 G-Class roaming through off-road scenery, but covered in the typical black and white test mule camouflaged. We felt privileged to see the new SUV in such detail. Well, that privilege has been blown away as leaked photos of an uncamouflaged G-Wagen have surfaced for the first time!

It is clear Mercedes wanted to keep the G-Class’ iconic appearance intact. The boxy SUV’s design has been evolved rather than revolutionized, despite this being the first generational change since 1979.

Mercedes Teases New G-Wagen Ahead of January 15 Debut

It feels like an ode to Jurassic Park

Mercedes-Benz is on the cusp of debuting its all-new 2019 G-Wagen. In fact, the reveal party is set for January 15, 2018, at the Detroit Auto Show. Ahead of Detroit, though, Mercedes has released a teaser commercial for the next-gen G-Class, and boy, it seems to reference Jurassic Park pretty hard.

Remember the scene from the original movie from 1993 where dinosaurs were brought back to life using DNA extracted from a mosquito that had survived centuries encased in amber? Well, it seems Mercedes is doing the same with the new G-Wagen – bringing it back to life by using DNA from the 1979 G-Wagen. The teaser commercial shows the 1979 model, which was the first year of the long-running previous generation, encased in a block of amber like it’s been preserved for centuries. In truth, it’s been Mercedes that has kept the G-Wagen so well preserved, having given it minimal updates through the decades.

Of course, that’s changing for the 2019 model year. The new G-Class is wider, longer, and more luxurious, while still capable off the beaten path. Mercedes has already shown the G-Wagen’s swanky new interior. It includes inspiration from the S-Class sedan and offers 5.9 inches of additional legroom for rear passengers. Modern safety and connectivity features will be present, too, along with new drivetrain options.

TopSpeed will have the full details on January 15, but until then, have a look at this fun, 53-second video. And don’t be surprised is Mercedes continues its association with the Jurassic Park movie fancies in any future films. It’s easy to imagine Chris Pratt outrunning a T-Rex in a modified G-Wagen.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2019 G-Class Interior

Conquering nature in style

The G-Class has been around since 1979, and is best known as the go-to option for those craving off-roading action mated with the opulence of a luxury hotel room. Now, it’s looking like the G-Class will retain its reputation for top-shelf comfort with the upcoming 2019 model, as Mercedes just dropped details on the interior spec alongside several official images.

The design and layout look fresh with rounded air vents and an enormous digital readout spread across the dash. There are also more classic cues, like the grab handle for the front passenger. Chrome trim is used for the various switchgear, while open-pore wood trim adds a rich touch. There’s also carbon fiber trim, if you want it. As expected, animal hide is used extensively. Upholstery colors include Lugano leather with finishes in Black, Nut Brown, or Macchiato Beige. Further color options are offered with various equipment packages, which also open up the option for tasty diamond-pattern quilting.

Touch-sensitive buttons can be found on the steering wheel to control the various infotainment features through smartphone-esque motions, and include haptic feedback as well. The mammoth screen on the dash comes from the Mercedes E-Class and S-Class, and includes a duo of 12.3-inch displays placed side-by-side. These are configurable with a variety of display modes to suit your fancy. Standard spec is a seven-speaker audio system, while the optional Burmester surround sound system throws in 16 speakers, a 590-watt amp, and Digital Sound Processing.

New for 2019 is a considerable expansion to interior room dimensions. In front, there’s an extra 1.5 inches of legroom and shoulder room, and an extra 2.7 inches of elbow room, while in back, there’s an extra 1.1 inches of shoulder room, 2.2 inches of extra elbow room, and a whopping 5.9 inches of extra legroom. There are new storage areas as well, added to the armrest, center console, and doors. A 60/40 split for the rear bench adds practicality.

Outside, expect the same blocky styling, plus off-roader cues like an exposed spare wheel and protective molding. Look for complete details when the new G-Class drops next month at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Sales will commence late 2018.

Toyo Tires and Ac Milan Release their Fourth Collaboration Video, and It’s Amazing

Reality meets animation; drifting meets football (soccer)

If you haven’t seen the first three videos put together in collaboration between Ac Milan and Toyo Tires, you’ve seriously missed out. We’ve added those down below so you can catch up, but before you do we need to tell you about the fourth collaboration titled: “Ac Milan in Japanimation.” It’s a completely different animal compared to the previous videos, this time staring four key players from not only AC Milan but Gamba Osaka as well. It was filmed in Japan and Italy, but that’s not the best part. The best part is that Toyo commissioned none other than Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of the very popular and long-running manga series, Captain Tsubasa.

As such, this video is a unique mix of reality and animation in the best way, with AC Milan players, Riccardo Montolivo, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, André Silva, Ricardo Rodríguez taking on Gamba Osaka players, Yasuhito Endo, Yasuyuki Konno, Shu Kurata, Hiroki Fujiharu. What starts out as a scene with Montolivo reading a manga, quickly turns into a showdown not only between the two teams but a Mercedes G63 (represented by AC Milan) and a Mercedes SL400 that’s represented by Gamba Osaka. While the players in natural and animation form battle it back and forth with a ball, the two Mercedes’, which are riding upon Toyo Proxes tires, take to the street in an awesome, mostly animated drift battle.

Our first unobstructed view of the new G’s digs

Interior images of Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming 2019 G-Class have just leaked online thanks to Dutch Autoweek. The photos show a mockup of the dashboard, complete with its massive infotainment screen, swanky air vents, and modern design. Of course, the dash isn’t the only new part of the 2019 G-Class – rather, the entire body-on-frame SUV will be brand new. That’s something that hasn’t happened in several decades.

The more upscale dash matches what we know the new G-Wagen. It will be wider, longer, and have better on-road refinement thanks to an independent front suspension system and adaptive dampers. Basically, Mercedes is taking its high-class Jeep Wrangler and making it much more refined. The G-Wagen will still be insanely capable off-road, though, thanks to a full-time 4WD system and locking differentials front, center, and rear. Those diff lock controls are positioned prominently between the center air vents, suggesting the G-Wagen will still be marketed as a go-anywhere SUV.

Other visible details include controls styled after the S-Class sedan, a bank of toggle switches, and an analog clock. The gauge cluster is also analog, but we’re betting the S-Class’ full digital cockpit will be available. We can’t wait to see the rest of the interior, and thankfully, that likely won’t be long.
