• 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition

Mercedes has a lot of reasons to be celebrating these days, having just conquered Formula One after seeing rival Red Bull dominate in recent years. This year, Mercedes finally turned the tables with its own dominant run, sweeping the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in record-breaking fashion. Such an accomplishment deserves its due praise, or in the case of Mercedes, a pair of special edition 2014 SL63 AMGs to commemorate its triumphant return to the top of Formula One.

These SL63 AMG models aren’t your typical SL63’s as they were co-created by reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton and runner-up Nico Rosberg. It’s fitting that these two had hands in building these special-edition models. Hamilton and Rosberg were so far ahead of the field this season that the championship quickly evolved into a two-man race between the Mercedes teammates. Hamilton eventually won out, but the real victory belongs to Mercedes, which developed a car that was miles ahead of the competition.

All in all, Mercedes will develop 38 examples of the World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition, 19 each for Hamilton and Rosberg and dedicated to each of the 19 Formula One race tracks used in the 2014 season.

Unfortunately, the models come at a premium price and it’s unlikely that anybody with money to spare can just scoop up and get one or both versions of this special edition SL63 AMG. In order for you to be eligible to buy any one of these two, you’re going to need to be a part of Mercedes’ Circle of Excellence, the company’s exclusive club reserved for VIPs and Mercedes lifers.

Both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were given free reign to come up with their own colors for their respective SL63 AMGs. It might be just a coincidence but the color options both chose kind of reflects their partnership within the Mercedes F1 team. Hamilton’s never been afraid to wear the black hat of the team and Rosberg has been his biggest foil during the 2014 Formula One season so its only fitting that the German decided to choose white as the dominant color of his SL63 AMG.

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton’s SL63 AMG creation was treated to a sexy, black color with a special Designo Night Black Magno finish on exterior items like the mirrors, door handles and rims. All that black on the car is complemented by gold-colored lettering on the badges, as well as gold fins and gold stripes on the rear bumper, and a chromed black tailpipe trim.

Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg took a cleaner and fresher approach with the design of his own SL63 AMG. Instead of Hamilton’s black-and-gold treatment, the German opted for a body finished in Designo Cashmere White Magno. The car’s detachable body parts were then finished in Designo Himalayas Grey while the tailpipe trim also received the same chromed black look as Hamilton’s creation.

I don’t want to make this a competition between the two, but as far as the interior of their cars are concerned, I like the approach Hamilton took in dressing up the cabin of his SL63 AMG more than what Rosberg, and apparently his wife, did to his version of the sports car.

Lewis Hamilton

The newly crowned Formula One World Champion continued with the black-and-gold treatment with a cabin that’s largely covered in Black Designo Exclusive Nappa leather to go with various trims and panels covered in gold. The reigning world champ also dressed the seats up in Black Nappa leather with fancy gold-colored stitching, creating a splashy interior befitting his posh lifestyle.

Nico Rosberg

For his part, Rosberg’s interior is a little more reserved than Hamilton’s, a part of which Rosberg attributed to his wife’s own taste and preference. We’re not going to go against that. Anyway, Rosberg’s SL63 AMG features a Titanium Grey Designo Exclusive Style leather that covers various elements of the interior, including the seats, steering wheel, the door belt lines, the soft-top cover, and the upper part of the instrument panel. Meanwhile, the lower part of the instrument panel, the center console, and the door panels are all finished in Deep White Nappa leather while various trim parts spread throughout the interior were given the Designo Cashmere White Magno treatment.

The SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition models didn’t receive any performance upgrades, but both did get the boat of options from Mercedes.

The two cars are powered by a 5.5-liter, bi-turbo, V-8 engine that packs a mean 585 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. When stretching its legs, the SL63 AMG is capable of hitting 60 mph in 4.2 seconds to go with a top speed of 186 mph.

In addition to the massive engine, the two special edition SL63 AMGs have been loaded with a plethora of extra options, including the AMG Driver’s package, an AMG sports suspension, the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system, a panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, and AIRSCARF, among other neat goodies.

In a perfect world, we’d want both models to have in our garages. Unfortunately, getting them is far easier said than done. Mercedes is only building 19 black and 19 white models of the SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition. More importantly, each of the 38 models are actually one-offs, representing one of the 19 Formula One race tracks from the 2014 season.

Here’s the tricky part: Mercedes is exclusively offering these special edition SL63 AMGs to its Circle of Excellence VIP club. How do you gain entry to the club? Well, you need to be a loyal customer, which is short of saying that you need to have bought a handful of Mercedes models over the years.

So let’s say you are a part of the Mercedes Circle of Excellence. If you want to get first dibs on the World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition cars, you’re going to have to buy them in pairs at a price of €629,510, which is about $784,250 as of 12/2/2014. Mercedes will eventually offer them as single units, but both will be priced at a more expensive single unit price of €320,110 (about $398,800).

Those who end up buying any of the two models should know that paying the exorbitant price tags for these cars will also net them a handful of add-ons, including helmets worn by either Hamilton or Rosberg, a Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg Edition IWC Ingenieur chronograph watch, a Formula One book signed by both drivers, and an invitation to watch the inaugural race of the 2015 F1 season in Melbourne, Australia.

The Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition models are the perfect cars for any true-blue fan of the Mercedes Formula One racing team. The cars themselves are about as unique as they get and the bonus goodies are just downright incredible.

But there’s something to be said about these two models carrying price tags of close to $400,000 each. That’s a little hard to come to terms with, even if we have the money to afford them.

  • Leave it
    • Insanely expensive considering that one model costs twice as much as a standard SL63 AMG
    • Too many conditions to buy one, or two
    • Obviously not available for everyone

Mercedes-Benz "World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition" - Unique: SL 63 AMG dedicated to Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating its triumph in the Formula 1 World Championship with two exquisite special models of the SL 63 AMG - co-created by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton, who became the Formula 1 champion for the 2014 season after a series of memorable duels, proposed black as his base colour. Nico Rosberg, his fiercest rival in this season’s races, chose white as his colour theme. Mercedes-Benz is only producing 19 of each model. And each model in the "World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition" is effectively one-of-a-kind: for each individual vehicle is dedicated to one of the 19 Formula 1 race tracks used this year and is unmistakeably identifiable as such through some of its equipment and appointment details.

World champion and serial winner: the two Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were first through the chequered flag in 16 out of the 19 Formula 1 races this year, delivering up some thrilling duels in motorsport’s elite discipline at the same time, sometimes literally wheel-to-wheel. The prize for this outstanding performance: first and second place in the drivers’ championship and undisputed champion of the constructors’ championship. To mark these achievements, Mercedes-Benz has dedicated a unique Collector’s Edition to each of its two world-beating drivers. The sporting competitiveness on the tarmac which propelled them both to their superlative performances can also be seen in the two very different designs.

Athletic and challenging - black

Formula 1 champion Hamilton demonstrated his penchant for glamour and the exceptional with a black SL – athletically challenging. This vehicle comes in the special paint finish designo night black magno which can be found on such detachable body parts as the exterior mirrors, door handles and rims as well. Gold-coloured lettering, fins and stripes on the rear bumper impart a feeling of power. The tailpipe trim is in chromed black.

Black and gold dominate the interior, too: gold-coloured stitching adorns the seats in black nappa leather, the instrument panel and centre console are also covered in black designo Exclusive nappa leather, with the trim parts gleaming in gold.

Elegant and stylish - white

Rosberg’s SL provides an elegant contrast. With the main body finished in designo cashmere white magno, the detachable body parts such as the door handles, wheels, lettering, fins, the insert in the front bumper, surround for the daytime running lamps, window trim and the spoiler lip in the boot lid provide a finely-judged contrast in designo himalayas grey. Both Formula 1 drivers were in agreement when it came to the tailpipe trim: it is in chromed black for the white car, too.

designo Exclusive Style leather in titanium grey sets the tone for the interior in the Nico Rosberg model. It adorns the seats, which have basalt grey topstitching, the steering wheel, the door beltlines, the soft-top cover and also the upper part of the instrument panel. The lower part of the instrument panel is finished in deep white nappa leather, as are the centre console and the door panels. The trim parts gleam in designo cashmere white magno.

The ultimate specification

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in both Mercedes-AMG SL 63 special models has an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and torque of 900 newton metres, giving them breathtaking thrust. The top speed limit of both has been raised to a championship level of 300 km/h, making them true high-performance roadsters. Both the Lewis Hamilton and the Nico Rosberg model have the same top-flight specification. It includes the AMG Driver’s package, numerous assistance systems, AMG sports suspension, AIRSCARF, the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system, a panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, as well as AMG sports seats and much, much more.

The World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition thus offers the legend amongst sports cars that is the SL in two top-class versions. They reflect both the sporting rivalry and the goal shared between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Each vehicle is a one-off

Every vehicle in the "World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition" is a unique car, in the truest sense of the phrase, that will make it an absolute "must-have" for many a collector. For each vehicle in this Edition is in fact a one-off. Only 19 black and 19 white models are being produced - standing for each of the 19 Formula 1 race tracks that featured in the 2014 season. An illustration of the race track in question is hand-embroidered into the vehicle’s floor mats and engraved on a badge in the centre console as well as on the vehicle’s key.

Mercedes-Benz is offering the 19 black and white models of the "World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition" exclusively to the members of the Mercedes-Benz Circle of Excellence. In keeping with the team spirit, these exclusive edition vehicles will at first only be offered in pairs, and subsequently also as individual units. Purchasers will also receive a helmet worn by Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg. Further attractive extras include a Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton Edition IWC Ingenieur chronograph watch, an F1 book signed by both drivers and an invitation to the opening race of the 2015 season, in Melbourne. The vehicles will be handed over at the German Grand Prix 2015.

The price for the strictly limited-edition and unique pair of vehicles, both of which immortalise the exciting duels fought through this Championship, is €629,510. A single vehicle costs €320,110 (incl. VAT).
