• 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe "Edition 1"

Production of the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is kicking of with a specal "Edition 1" model.

Back in February 2014, Mercedes-Benz left us in awe when it unveiled the brand-new S-Class Coupe. The two-door replaced the CL-Class and became the first coupe to be included in the S-Class lineup since the early 1990s. As if the S-Class Coupe wasn’t breathtaking enough, the Germans introduced an AMG-prepped version in April 2014, with improved aerodynamics, more aggressive looks, an incredibly powerful V-8, and a sportier interior. As the S63 AMG Coupe is getting ready to hit showrooms for the 2015 model year, Mercedes is rolling out the Edition 1 model.

Much like any other Edition 1 model, the S63 AMG Coupe is wrapped in an exclusive exterior paint, while the cabin is reupholstered in the finest Nappa leather from Designo and a two-tone theme. Although it carries the same engine as the standard coupe, this AMG is the perfect choice for those looking to grab a hold of the very first units rolling off the assembly line. Read on to find out more about all the extra goodies that come with the Edition 1 name.

The Edition 1 is confined to a Magno Alanite Grey paint with a matte finish

Like most Edition 1 models, this S63 AMG Coupe comes with subtle exterior add-ons. While the regular model can be ordered in a host of body colors, the Edition 1 is confined to a Magno Alanite Grey paint with a matte finish taken from the very exclusive Designo palette. While the shade is far from flashy, it successfully enhances the coupe’s elegant and sporty body lines.

The vehicle’s brand-new headlamps with high-performance LED technology are equipped with Swarovski crystals, while the large, five-spoke wheels hide a carbon-ceramic braking system.

The exquisite interior is further enhanced by a two-tone Designo Nappa leather

The S63 AMG Coupe’s already exquisite interior is further enhanced by a two-tone Designo Nappa leather. The Bengal Red and Black upholstery that wraps the seats comes with contrast stitching and piping. The red-and-black theme continues on both the door panels and the dashboard, where the Designo leather is replaced by Nappa hide. The headliner is finished in fine Dinamica microfiber.

Everything else is standard C63 AMG Coupe, but no one will complain with features such as the leather-wrapped AMG sports steering wheel, aluminum shifter, the large infotainment system or the digital instrument cluster.

The drivetrain remains standard on the Edition 1, meaning customers will find the same bi-turbo, 5.5-liter V-8 under the hood.

The drivetrain remains standard on the Edition 1, meaning customers will find the same bi-turbo, 5.5-liter V-8 under the hood. The mill generates a whopping 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of twist and sends it to the wheels through an AMG Speedshift DCT transmission. An AMG-tweaked 4MATIC system spreads the oomph to all four corners.

The combo enables the coupe to charge from naught to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, which is as quick as a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with the Z51 package. Top speed comes in at 189 mph.

Drivetrain Specifications

Displacement 5,461 CC
Output 577 HP @ 5,500 RPM
Max. torque 664 LB-FT 2,250-3,750 RPM
Curb weight 4,678 Lbs
Acceleration 0 - 60 mph 3.9 s (est.)
Top speed 186 mph (electronically limited)

There’s no word on pricing yet, but expect the Edition 1 to cost more than $170,000. The standard S63 AMG Coupe retails from $160,900.

Bentley Continental GT Speed

With the S63 AMG Coupe ready to hit the streets, Mercedes-Benz is finally able to give the Bentley Continental a run for its money. And not just any Continental, but the beefed-up, W-12-powered, GT Speed model. While the British GT may look a lot more muscular on the outside — but not as elegant as the S63 — both coupes are pretty much on par with one another as far as interior luxury goes. Acres of leather cover nearly every surface that isn’t metal or wood, with bright-painted accents contrasting the dark monotone cabin.

Under the hood of the Speed GT lurks a monster of a W-12 engine, displacing 6.0 liters, and making 626 horsepower and 607 pound-feet of torque. That’s 49 ponies more than the S63 AMG Coupe, but 57 less pound-feet of twist when compared to the same German rig. Despite being more powerful, the GT Speed is a tad slower than the S63 AMG, needing four seconds to charge from naught to 60 mph, 0.1 seconds more than the Merc. However, its top speed is superior at 206 mph.

The Continental GT Speed retails from $230,325, nearly $70K more than what Mercedes charges for the S63 AMG Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz has made a tradition from offering Edition 1 models for nearly every production car, and the stunning C63 AMG Coupe is no exception. We could argue that a new exterior paint and a pair of seats wrapped in Designo Nappa leather might not be enough for a special-edition model, but we know this vehicle is more about buying one of the very first units to roll off the assembly line rather than getting a few extra options.
