Mercedes’ lineup of AMG GT sports cars come with enough varieties that customers shouldn’t have issues picking which of these versions suit them best. Even after they’ve already chosen among the AMG GT, GT S, GT R, or the GT C Roadster, the possibilities for customization are also available at their beck and call. Tuners like Mansory, RennTech, Piecha Design, and Brabus all have programs available for different versions of the AMG GT. It’s dandy that the sports car receivers so much aftermarket love because another tuner, U.S.-based Dime Racing, is also set to offer its own tuning kit for the Mercedes sports car. Even better, the kit comes with an actual watch.

Dime actually doesn’t have the actual kit prepared yet, but it is a legitimate AMG racing and tuning outfit with an SLS AMG competing in the Pirelli World Challenge. So even without the product, Dime is promising massive upgrades to the AMG GT that, once completed, will feature, among other things 745 horsepower to play with. That’s more than what Mansory’s 720-horsepower offer for the same sports car. Pretty intriguing, right?

Not surprisingly, Dime is limiting the program to just 100 units per year, ensuring top-notch quality for each model it builds. It’s also announced a price of $150,200 for each program, which presumably already includes the donor car itself. That includes “bumper-to-bumper” warranty so those who end up with a Dime-tuned AMG GT can take comfort knowing their car is covered in the event of a mishap or two. Apparently, the first batch of cars are all reserved, which is a remarkable act of faith considering that the whole kit is not yet finished.

Oh, and about that watch. The tuner is also offering a personalized Växjö that comes with machine serial numbers with the car and will come directly from former Formula One driver and 1997 Le Mans winner Stefan Johansson.

It’s a tantalizing offer, but unlike those who already put the money down on reservations, I’d like to see the actual finished product first before making any judgments on what Dime Racing is offering.

Exterior

Even though we’re a little short on specific details from Dime Racing at the moment, photos of the AMG GT with the kits installed show a few aerodynamic components installed into the body of the sports car, including that massive rear spoiler that definitely has a far more important purpose than being an ornament of sorts. A new set of wheels is also on the menu that look to be around 19 or 20 inches in diameter.

Drivetrain

This is where things get interesting because Dime Racing has already thrown out a number on how much power its tuned AMG GTs will get at their disposal. As I mentioned, 745 horsepower is a load and a half on the AMG GT. It’s more than Mansory’s offer. It’s a lot more than the 600-horsepower and 612-horsepower programs prepared by Brabus and Piecha Design, respectively. That’s the exciting part, which leads me to think that Dime Racing’s engine kit for the AMG GT’s 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 revolves around upgrades to the turbochargers and the cooling and injection systems. A remapping of the car’s ECU unit&euro is likely to be included as well.

I suppose that with these upgrades in tow, the 745-horsepower AMG GT should be capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in the lower three-second mark. Mansory does claim that its program for the AMG GT can cover the same distance in 3.4 seconds so given that this one has similar aero mods and slightly higher output, 3.3 seconds should be a good estimate to go with a top speed that’s north of 200 mph.

Suspension and Brakes

The only thing Dime Racing alluded to with regards to the suspension upgrades on the AMG GT is that it has “redesigned the suspension.” That could mean a variety of things but the common belief is that it’s been to at least help the sports car accommodate all the extra power without losing its driving and handling characteristics.

Pricing

It's $152,000 for the whole program and that already includes the Stefan Johansson Växjö watch.

Competition

Mercedes-AMG GT S by Mansory

I’ve mentioned Mansory’s tuning program for the Mercedes-AMG GT S numerous times. That’s because it’s one tuning program that holds up to what Dime Racing has in store for the sports car. It’s got more provocative upgrades to the car’s exterior and interior, but like Dime, the highlight of Mansory’s tuning program is the engine upgrade. First, it took out the AMG GT S’s existing turbochargers and replaced them with larger units. Then it installed a high-flow air filter to complement the bigger turbos and added an optimized ECU unit. The result is an output of 730 horsepower, a 217-horsepower rise from the V-8’s standard output of 503 horsepower and an improved sprint time to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG GT S by Brabus

Brabus also has a program available for the Mercedes-AMG GT S, although its engine upgrade falls short of what both Dime Racing and Mansory are offering. It’s still good enough for 600 horsepower and 533 pound-feet of torque, which the tuner achieved through a combination of a new engine management system. Brabus says that the tuned AMG GT S is capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds to go with a top speed of 201 mph.

Conclusion

This is an exciting program, that much I will admit. Between the aero mods and the promise of 745 horsepower, Dime Racing is setting high expectations with this tuning kit. If this track-tuned, street-legal AMG GT is as good as Dime Racing is hyping it up to be, then I'll be looking forward to the company delivering on that promise.
