AMG announces a few body upgrades for the revised Mercedes CLA

The Mercedes CLA is only a few years old, having debuted at the Detroit Auto Show back in 2013, but Mercedes found it only right to give the car a facelift for the 2017 model year. With that facelift came some updated styling that includes new front and rear fascias, new wheels, a new paint finish, and some new interior trim pieces. Of course, the car was updated to match Mercedes’ current design language, but we knew it would only be a matter of time before the German brand would start dropping new items into the accessories bin for the CLA. And, it has already started, with the new accessories being showcased on the car you see here – a Mercedes CLA with AMG Accessories.

The accessories are available for the CLA 250 Sport and any CLA model that sports the AMG logo. For now, there isn’t a whole lot to talk about, but the car can now be equipped with what some might refer to as a body kit, some side stripes, and a new set of wheel hub covers that are actually pretty darn cool. While none of these accessories will make the little car any faster, they do increase the curb appeal and give it a sportier appearance – even if the new kit isn’t what you would consider extreme.

So, let’s take a look at the new accessories and what they mean for the CLA. If you’re thinking about getting your hands on a refreshed model, you’ll certainly want to consider the accessories if you intend to stand out from the pack a little.

What makes the Mercedes CLA With AMG Accessories special

The AMG accessories available for the CLA include a new front splitter, new side skirts, new rear fascia molding with an imitation diffuser, additional rear flics, and sport stripes. Looking at the front of the car, the original air dam insert is replaced by the new front splitter, and it gives the front end a lot more character. The splitter element protrudes away from the bumper below the corner air vents and ultimately wraps around along the out edge of those vents. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but it does give the car a different look.

Moving over to the sides, the side skirt attachments are also a welcomed addition. The stock side skirts are rather boring and, outside of matching the finish of the car, are pretty obsolete in the grand scheme of things. The AMG side skirts have a twisted look to them and protrude from the body by about an inch. Notice how the sharp contour travels from the lower front point to the top of the side skirt, before swooping back down and fading into the rear, lower corner? Not a bad design if I do say so myself. While we’re here, we might as well touch base on those center hubs too. They are manufactured out of aluminum with the gray and black colors applied using a silk-screen process before the entire emblem is embossed for a nice, clear finish. According to Mercedes, the tree by the river stands for the company’s location in Affalterback, while the cam lobe, valve, and valve spring pay tribute to the engine construction and “motor racing history technology.”

Moving to the rear, we can see that the rear AMG trim insert replaces the gloss back insert found on the stock model. In the center, it features three vertically oriented fins to simulate a rear diffuser, with a recess around each exhaust pipe. This recess makes it look like the exhaust outlets are floating, and gives the rear end more of a 3D effect. Furthermore, you’ll find those extra flics on the bottom of the fascia, behind the rear wheels. These are rather bland but serve as a transition from the side skirts to the new rear trim insert. All told, the whole AMG package adds a lot of visual value to the CLA, and it’s certainly something I would opt for, assuming Mercedes isn’t charging an arm, leg, and first born for the kit.

Oddly, the AMG sport stripes aren’t depicted in the images released by Mercedes. I guess they dropped the ball on that one. They have disclosed that the body kit attachments are created using a “deep-draw” technology and can only be hand in high-gloss black. Apparently, the finish is part of the manufacturing process and eliminates the need for paint finishing during installation. That means a trip to the dealer for an upgrade should be an in-and-out venture, while installation should be easy enough to do in your own driveway if you’re the kind of person who likes to do their own work. Mercedes says all of these attachments should be available from dealers in mid-July, so you should be able to get your hands on them now if you wish.

Mercedes-AMG further expands its range of accessories: after the corresponding line-up for the C- and A-Class, the Affalterbach-based company also now offers sporty attachments for the updated CLA model. Sporty appearance for the updated CLA model: the new attachment parts further enhance the dynamic looks of the CLA 250 Sport (4MATIC) and all other CLA models with the AMG Line option. The new offering from Mercedes-AMG comprises a total of four attachments for the bodywork, and sporty side stripes. The attachments are manufactured using deep-draw technology and always come in high-gloss black – ideal for a sporty appearance. The high-quality surface finish eliminates the need for painting and as a result the attachments can be installed without additional expense. A short installation time thanks to easy handling was a top priority already during the development of the AMG accessories. The sporty side stripes are applied as a film below the dropping line of the Coupé and Shooting Brake. All components will be available at authorised sales outlets starting mid-July.

Brand history in miniature form: the new Mercedes-AMG wheel hub covers are now available at authorised sales outlets. Their emblem depicts the three pillars of the successful performance brand. A tree by a river stands for the company’s location in Affalterbach (old German: "apple tree by the creek"). Cam lobe, valve and valve spring symbolise engine construction and motor racing technology.

The exclusive wheel hub covers are manufactured with great love of detail: the various black and grey hues are applied to the aluminium using a silk-screen printing process before it is embossed to become an emblem. The emblems are then sealed with a clear coat and applied to a plastic base. The individual elements can be felt as they are embossed – a special 3-D effect. Apart from offering a special appearance, they also keep the wheel hubs from getting dirty. The Mercedes-AMG wheel hub covers fit all light-alloy wheels previously equipped with standard wheel hub covers (diameter: 70 mm). The set of four Mercedes-AMG wheel hub covers comes in a deluxe presentation box.
