German tuner splashes some chrome and adds some power to the GLE

The Mercedes GLE Coupe may very well be the most appealing model Mercedes has in its lineup (at least in my eyes that is), but even that doesn’t exempt it from getting some aftermarket love. That’s precisely the case here as German tuner Chromatic, known for its tuning programs for Mercedes models, has presented its aftermarket take on the GLE Coupe 350d. The result, among other things, is an increased output of 300 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

In addition to the work Chrometec put into the GLE’s 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine, the tuner is also offering plenty of chrome and carbon options for the SUV’s exterior. Customers can opt to have certain panels of the GLE finished in either chrome or carbon to add to the appeal of the vehicle. A new rear spoiler is also available, as is a set of wheels from wheel specialist Concave.

Taken piece by piece, Chrometec’s program isn’t going to excite anybody. But put them all together and the narrative turns to a unique kit for the GLE that certain owners can get behind.

Not surprisingly, chrome plays a significant part in Chrometec’s exterior upgrades for the GLE Coupe. Chrome mirror caps and chrome decorative frame for headlights and taillights are all available, as is the option to have panels coated with carbon. The tuner is also offering a unique LED projector for Mercedes’ star logo. On the aerodynamic front, Chrometec is offering a rear spoiler lip while a new set of 22-inch concave alloy wheels that are available in black matte, silver, and titan finishes complete the exterior upgrades.

Drivetrain

The modifications to the Mercedes GLE Coupe’s 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine revolves around a simple plug-and-play performance tuning kit that bumps the SUV’s output to an impressive 300 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That represents an increase of 42 horses and 59 pound-feet of twist over the standard unit. It’s a straight-forward kit, but customers can add more life to their GLEs by opting for a complementing pedal box that offers three different driving modes, each with its own set of benefits. Last but not least is an active sound system that Chrometec is offering to give the GLE’s V-6 engine a throatier, V-8-like sound.

Noted Porsche tuner TechArt presented a program for the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel back in November 2015 and among other notable features, it came with an engine upgrade that helped bring the output of the SUV’s 3.0-liter V-6 engine from 240 horsepower to 275 horsepower. The tuner accomplished that by using its own Techtronic engine management system, helping ensure that the extra power gains are felt by owners of the SUV.

The whole tuning kit for the Mercedes GLE isn’t going to turn the coupe-SUV into a world-beater, but it does enough to give it a new set of punches that it can utilize when needed. The chrome options on the exterior are a nice touch and the wheels are particularly saucy. The engine upgrades are alright given the circumstances. Take it for what it’s worth; just don’t expect too much out of Chrometec’s program or you might end up being disappointed.
