The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe hasn’t been the best-received of vehicles. It’s another of those vehicles that tries so hard to fit into so many different niches that it doesn’t get any of them quite right. But Brabus knows that people will be willing to overlook a lot in the name of insane amounts of power, and if anyone can crank that kind of power out of the GLE Coupe, it is definitely Brabus. The new creation is given the name 850, the same as several other Brabus creations that are based off of 63-badged Mercedes products.

What makes the GLE Coupe 850 different from the other Brabus 850 products is that the base vehicle isn’t an AMG, as there is no AMG version of the GLE Coupe, at least not yet. The GLE63 S still uses the same engine as 63-badged AMG products, and it still costs nearly twice as much as the base model, but it isn’t quite as visually attention-grabbing as an AMG. So the GLE Coupe 850 might come as more of a shock than other 850 models. And yet, for all of the shocking craziness of the exterior, it is a surprisingly refined and civilized cabin.

This might be our first look at a Brabus take on the GLE Coupe, but fans of the Mercedes tuner will already be familiar with such touches as the blacked-out grille and the replacing of all of the Mercedes badges with Brabus’s “B” logo. Carbon-fiber accents are used on the exterior, and there is a new rear diffuser and a redesigned front fascia.

The GLE has air suspension, so Brabus only needed to install a new control module in order to lower the ride height by 1.4 inches. Probably a good idea for a beast like this, as it lowers the center of gravity and improves handling. A variety of wheels are offered, in 21, 22, and 23 inches. The photos show the 23-inch wheels. It’s not a terribly subtle look, but nothing about the rest of the exterior would suggest that this was Brabus’s goal.

The work to the interior has been extensive, but Brabus hasn’t gone so far as to change the layout, as Mercedes-Benz has already done a commendable job on that. Instead, what Brabus offers is a long list of options for new materials. These allow you upgrade to higher-quality materials like Alcantara or Mastik, a new sort of highly breathable leather.

This new upholstery is available in a much wider variety of colors than the original version from Mercedes, and Brabus will cover the seats, dash and headliner as part of the standard package for the car. Other options include illuminated kick plates, new pedals and a new steering wheel, although this isn’t pictured. In fact, the pictures of the interior are generally pretty restrained, but Brabus is always happy to make it even more posh if you’re willing to spend the money.

Just take a peek under the hood of the 850 and it is immediately obvious that the changes have been extensive, although you still might not appreciate the full scope. The engine starts off as the same twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 used in all 63-badged Mercedes products. It is then bored out to 6.0-liters and given a billet crank and forged rods and pistons.

Power is thereby pushed up to 850 horsepower and an awesomely excessive 1,069 pound-feet of torque.

Bigger turbos have been fitted, and these now draw air from a duct in the hood. Power is thereby pushed up to 850 horsepower and an awesomely excessive 1,069 pound-feet of torque. It’s the same treatment given to other Brabus 850 models, but while these usually have torque limited to 848 pounds-feet for the sake of the drivetrain, there is no mention of this with the GLE Coupe 850.

There is a completely new exhaust system, which should come as no surprise. The system is stainless steel, and has an adjustable noise level so that you can turn it down when near your home, so as not to annoy your neighbors, and turn it up when you’re looking to impress your friends.

All of this combines to make the sizable and heavy SUV sprint to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 mph. This top speed could have been higher, but Brabus has had to limit it due to tire restrictions.

The 850 is listed for €289,218.79 ($324,597.48). That’s an awfully high (and weirdly specific) number, but we are talking about a definitive tuner car that started out as a $110,000 vehicle, so there was no way it would be cheap. The price is roughly in keeping with the price of the E63 AMG 850, a sedan version of what is otherwise essentially the same vehicle. It is a hell of a lot of money for what it is, but this is generally true of all top-shelf tuner cars, and if you want an 850-horsepower GLE Coupe, it’s not as though there are a lot of cheaper options out there.

There are any number of tuner SUVs out there, but if you want an SUV that puts out anywhere near the kind of bonkers power figures as the Brabus, you’re going to have to look to the Hennessey HPE800, an 800-horsepower version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. At $235,000, it comes in at the price of a small house less than the Brabus and will hit 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, certainly quicker than the Brabus. The interior isn’t as nice as the Brabus’s, but if you just want to go fast in an SUV, this is a less expensive choice.

The GLE Coupe 850 illustrates both what is great about tuner cars and also their biggest drawback. On the one hand, it’s great that a company like Brabus exists to take your ordinary (if we’re going to use that word in connection with a $110,000 Mercedes-Benz) SUV and offers you levels of performance and customization far, far beyond what is possible through the manufacturer. It makes for a more special and far more impressive vehicle, and that cannot be denied. But then you have to consider that also triples the price, and that it very difficult to ignore. Even among the sorts of people that can spend this sort of money easily, this is going to be a difficult purchase to justify.

  • Leave it
    • the price is just as insane as the rest of it
    • for all of the changes, the GLE Coupe isn’t that attractive to begin with
    • not at all subtle, the cops will exactly what you’re getting up to

Press Release

The new Mercedes GLE Coupe has arrived and the GLE 63 4MATIC is the perfect platform for the engineers and designers of BRABUS (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777-0, fax + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777 111, Internet to turn into the world’s most powerful and fastest SUV coupe.

The BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo 4x4 Coupe is powered by a turbocharged V8 engine with a displacement of 6 liters. With a rated output of 625 kW / 850 HP (838 bhp) and a peak torque of 1,450 Nm (1,069 lb-ft), the super car launches itself from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 320 km/h (200 mph).
Aerodynamic-enhancement components made from clear-coated carbon and tailor-made BRABUS wheels including 23-inch king-sized rims lend the fastback SUV an especially exclusive appearance.
BRABUS fine leather interiors created from the finest leather and Alcantara in any desired color are available for customizing the cockpit.

The BRABUS 850 6.0 twin-turbo increased-displacement engine turns the GLE 63 Coupe and of course its brethren sporting the standard five-door body style into a high-performance vehicle in a class of its own.

To increase the displacement of the eight-cylinder engine from standard 5,461 cc to 5,912 cc (333 to 361 cu in), BRABUS bores out the cylinders to 99 millimeters (4 in) and installs correspondingly larger forged pistons. A special billet crankshaft with a stroke of 96 mm (3.8 in) instead of the standard 90.5 millimeters (3.6 in) and similarly forged longer piston rods round off the displacement increase. In addition, both cylinder heads of the V8 are optimized for gas flow.

The BRABUS 850 intake module designed specifically for the BRABUS increased-displacement engine immediately stands out when the hood is popped. It is made from carbon and includes a new air filter housing with enlarged intake cross-section. A sophisticated air duct integrated into the hood supplies it with cooling air.

Other equally fundamental components of the high-performance engine on the other hand are hidden deep down in the engine bay: the two production turbos are replaced with special turbochargers with larger compressor units and modified exhaust manifolds. To lower the charge air temperature further, the intake and charge air pipes are insulated with "Gold Heat Reflection" sheathing that immediately catches the eye.

This engine conversion also includes larger 75-millimeter (3 in) thick down pipes and a newly designed exhaust system. In concert with metal catalysts, the BRABUS stainless-steel exhaust system with controlled butterfly valves optimizes the power delivery. This exhaust also offers active sound management controlled from the driver’s seat: the exhaust note can be alternated between a throaty V8 sound in “sport” mode and a subtle whisper in “coming home” mode.

The BRABUS engine and electronics engineers used their tremendous knowledge to ensure the optimal interaction of these high-performance components in extensive tests on the road and on test rigs. This ensures not only maximum power, but also exemplary clean emissions and flawless durability. BRABUS vouches for this with the model BRABUS Tuning Warranty of three years, up to 100,000 kilometers/62,000 miles (see BRABUS Warranty Terms and Conditions, updated July 2013). BRABUS recommends high-performance lubricants from MOTUL.

This vastly elaborate design is reflected in outstanding performance: the rated power output of 625 kW / 850 HP (838 bhp) at a low 5,400 rpm and the gigantic peak torque of 1,450 Nm (1,069 lb-ft) between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm are both reference values in this category of vehicles.

The performance of the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo 4x4 Coupe is correspondingly outstanding: the SUV weighing more than 2,350 kilograms (5,180 pounds) launches itself from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds. Tire limitations necessitate restricting the top speed electronically to 320 km/h (200 mph).

Thrilling looks and optimal aerodynamic efficiency: The BRABUS designers developed high-tech carbon bodywork components for the GLE 63 that give both variants an even more spectacular appearance. The front spoiler lip, which attaches to the lower section of the bumper, lends the SUV an even more distinctive face. What is more: Its sophisticated shape minimizes lift on the front axle at high speeds for further optimized handling stability. The air intakes at the sides of the front bumper feature tailor-made air deflectors to give the vehicle an even sportier profile and direct the air to the air intakes in the side of the vehicle, which are equipped with integrated LED side markers.

For the rear bumper, BRABUS developed carbon trim for the side air outlets and a new diffuser insert, which provides the perfect backdrop for the two visual identifying features of the BRABUS high-performance exhaust system. The ceramics-coated design tailpipes marked with the BRABUS logo fill out the cutouts to the left and right of the diffuser fully. The BRABUS roof spoiler rounds off the aerodynamic-enhancement concept for the coupe.

BRABUS alloy wheels for the GLE 63 come in various designs and with diameters of 21, 22 or 23 inches. The most exclusive option is the BRABUS Monoblock "PLATINUM EDITION" high-tech king-sized 11Jx23 forged wheel. Thanks to state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, it offers an unrivalled combination of lightweight construction and maximum strength. BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA supply the matching high-performance tires for the SUV.

A special BRABUS control module for the AIRMATIC air suspension lowers the ride height of the high-performance SUV by about 35 millimeters (1.4 in). This gives the all-wheel-drive car not only a more exciting appearance, but also enhances driving dynamics further by lowering the center of gravity.

BRABUS enjoys a global reputation for excellence in the field of interior design as well. The company upholstery shop creates BRABUS fine leather interiors for the BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo 4x4 Coupe, every detail tailored to the owner’s preferences. The finest BRABUS Mastik, an especially and breathable type of leather, and Alcantara in any desired color are transformed by hand into high-end interiors from the dashboard and seats to the door panels and the headliner. The BRABUS interior carbon and wood trim sets also offer a maximum variety of colors and surface finishes.

The product range is rounded off with a wide lineup of custom accessories for the cockpit: the options range from aluminum door pins and pedals to stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, whose color changes in sync with the ambiance lighting.

The BRABUS 850 6.0 Biturbo 4x4 Coupe can be ordered as a complete car – including the SUV body style. Alternatively, BRABUS can convert any GLE 63 completely or in stages.
