Mercedes ushered in the sixth-generation S-Class for the 2014 model year. Inspired by the F700 concept car, the S-Class came correct with a large front grille, LED lighting (inside and out,) loads of luxurious leather, and a decent list of driver assistance features. Not long after the S-Class Sedan went on sale, Mercedes ushered in the first S-Class Coupe since the 1990s and it was one of the best moves the brand has made in a while. Offered here in the U.S. with a 4.7-liter V-8 in entry-level form, a 5.5-liter V-8 in AMG S63 form, or a 6.0-liter V-12 in AMG S65 form, the S-Class Coupe can be had with anywhere between 449 horsepower and 621 ponies on tap and can hit a 60-mph sprint in as quick as 3.8 seconds when properly equipped. Now that BMW and Audi have updated the 7 Series and A8, respectively, Mercedes has been working on a facelift for the S-Class, but before that happens, it’s introducing a darker model to the S-Class lineup.

The model goes by the name “Night Edition” and will be based on the U.K.-market S500 Coupe (We have the S550 Coupe here in the U.S.) Mercedes says this went into effect on December 9th, 2016, which means it’s making its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show. It comes with a number of dark enhancements that give it a somewhat menacing appearance while officially getting the S-Class Coupe onto the dark-themed bandwagon that every manufacturer has been jumping on lately. When the Detroit Auto Show kicks off, we’ll be sure to bring you a host of images and information on this special S-Class Coupe, but until then, let’s take a look at the few images we have and talk a little about it.

What Makes the S-Class Coupe Night Edition Special

When the gates open at the Detroit Auto Show, the Night Edition Coupe will roll onto the scene with on a pair of 20-inch, multi-spoke AMG wheels finished in high-sheen black with a chrome ring that will keep just a little bit of that bling factor. It also benefits from the single-louver grille finished in high-gloss black to match the mirror housings and side-sill panels. “Night Edition” badging will, of course, be added so that the world knows you’re driving something special, while the front and rear fascias will be updated with AMG body styling as standard equipment. The standard exterior paint finish is Selenite Grey Magno, but considering this is a six-figure car, I’m sure Merc will be more than happy to let you choose a different color – maybe even one that will add an even darker ambiance to the car, if you’re really into that kind of thing.

Moving over to the inside of this massive and dark-themed coupe, the first thing you’ll notice is the “Night Edition” working that is engraved on the Nappa leather insert of the AMG steering wheel. Upholstery can be had in leather, Nappa leather, or AMG Nappa leather. Color options include black on black, Crystal gray on black, Saddle brown on black, or Bengal red on black. It should also be noted that the various wood trim pieces inside are finished in high-gloss black.

And, that rounds out everything that this Night Edition model gets. Considering it’s based on the entry-level S-Class Coupe, it should get a 4.7-liter V-8 that delivers 445 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The dark nature of the beast doesn’t make it go any faster, but that’s okay because for being a large, heavy coupe, it’s actually quite fast. It can make the 60-mph sprint in 4.5 seconds on the way o a top speed that has yet to be announced but will likely be limited to the usual 155 mph. It lugs around up to 21.1 gallons of life-giving gasoline and, with a curb weight of 4,707 pounds, it can manage 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway on the U.S. scale. Shifting duties are handled by Mercedes’ resident 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission that routes power to all four wheels via Merc’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.

As far as pricing goes, that information is still classified. Considering the S500 goes for £99,145 ($123,723 at current exchange rates) before taxes, options, and destination. You can expect this Night Edition Coupe to cost somewhere around at least $130,000 (and possibly a divorce.)
