The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe may be little more than a slightly revised Mercedes CLS with some extra power, but it’s been received pretty well across the board and is considered a stand-alone AMG model. With all of the hype surrounding the car and AMG fanboys begging Mercedes to take their money, it should come as no surprise that AMG is set to offer the 4-Door in Edition 1 trim. It’s said to offer extra individualization and is based on the GT 63 S 4Matic+ -- the range topper of the 4-Door lineup. It includes a number of aerodynamic enhancements to go with some exterior extras and some finer interior appointments. So, let’s find out what the Edition 1 is all about.

What Makes the Exterior of AMG GT 4-Door Edition 1 Stand Out?

First off, the 4-Door Edition 1 is offered in one of three different exterior colors: Graphite Grey Magno, Diamond White Bright, or Graphite Grey Metallic. If you opt for the Graphite Grey Mango or Graphite Grey Metallic, you’ll also get matt graphite grey stripes on above the side sills, on the hood, the roof, and the tailgate. If you’re not a stripes person, however, you can also opt to go without them. What’s more important that all of this, however, is the AMG Aerodynamics Package that throws a new front splitter into the fold to go with an enhanced rear diffuser and a new rear spoiler.

The front splitter gets integrated flics for a fairly more aggressive look while the rear spoiler is mechanically adjustable. According to AMG, the new spoiler can increase downforce on the rear axle by as much as 30 kilograms or about 66 pounds. Meanwhile, the front splitter is said to assist the AIRPANEL air management system, allowing lift at the front axle to be reduced even more when the louvers are closed. And, to top it off, the car’s coefficient of drag is even lower than the standard 63 S model. AMG hasn’t gone into details, but that’s a lot to go into an Edition 1 model, don’t you think?

What Makes the Interior of the AMG GT 4-Door Edition 1 Stand Out

AMG really went all out when it comes to the interior, making the Edition 1 more enjoyable for the owner than those it passes by on the road. And, that’s how it should be. You’ll find the usual AMG touches like carbon fiber trim, yellow seat belts, illuminated and branded door sill panels, and floor mats with AMG lettering and yellow stitching. There’s so much more, though. The door panels, armrests, and center console have been wrapped in fresh Nappa leather (Magma Grey) while the upper portion of the dash gets black Nappa Leather and yellow stitching. The same treatment has also been given to the seats to really set the interior off a bit.

The enhancements go even further, though, thanks to the AMG Performance seats with the Memory Package as standard equipment and the AMG Performance steering wheel. The latter is wrapped in DINAMICA microfiber and has yellow stitching. There’s also a yellow 12 O’ clock strip because that’s a natural AMG goodie and there’s an Edition 1 badge on the bottom spoke.

Wrapping up the interior are the black chrome steering wheel bezels, AMG shift paddles, and AMG switches on the steering wheel. But, don’t forget about the AIR-BALANCE package, which also comes standard and even includes an exclusive fragrance known as “AMG #63.”

The AMG GT 4-Door Edition 1 is powered by a 4.0-liter V-8. Since it’s based on the 63 S 4Matic+, it’s tuned to deliver 639 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That power is shunted through an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission to all four wheels. That 4MATIC AWD system comes standard with variable torque distribution and drift mode. All told, the 62-mph sprint clocks in at 3.2 seconds with top speed residing at 195.73 mph.

AMG did pretty good when it came to bringing in optional equipment as standard inside and out; this much is clear. What isn’t clear, however, is the price. AMG hasn’t spilled those beans yet but it will make its debut at the ADAC Zurich 24h Race at the Nurburgring and will go on sale starting this summer with deliveries commencing September 2018.

The Edition 1 is very well equipped, but maybe you’re the kind of person with deep pockets and even deeper desires. If so, then there are some goodies in this section for you as well. There are four different options available including the AMG Night Package, AMG Exterior Carbon-Fiber Package 2, AMG High-Performance Ceramic Brakes, and a High-Class Rear Seat. AMG hasn’t disclosed how much any of these options will cost you, but don’t expect them to come cheap either.
