The aftermarket company has made only cosmetic changes to the boxy SUV

Wald International is known for its bold and aggressive builds. The Japanese tuner has worked on many popular models in the past, such as the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Porsche Cayenne, and even the little Suzuki Jimny.

This time around, it has laid its hands on the legendary Mercedes-AMG G 63 and named it the Sports Line Black Bison Edition. It is based on the model sold from 2016 to 2018. The company has made significant changes while retaining the boxy SUV’s essence. However, these changes are limited only to the exterior, as Wald International hasn’t tweaked the interior or anything under the hood. Even though the Black Bison Edition comes with aesthetic upgrades, will it sit well with the purists?

How Different Is It From The Standard G 63 On The Outside?

Up front, Wald has made changes to the bumpers. The new faux bull bar gives the face a sporty appearance. The honeycomb mesh detailing gels well with the newly added elements. The company has installed two LED strips here as well. Although it looks like the grille and the headlights are retained without any changes, Wald has actually made a few subtle changes. Just like the bumper, the headlights and the grille also receive covers but aren’t very prominent. It looks a little cheap, to be honest, but you can still live with it. Wald International has also installed an Aero hood to further enhance the overall sportiness.

The G63 Black Bison Edition looks quite different from the side. The box SUV comes with a lift kit as well, but there’s no word on how high it sits off the ground.

The company has equipped it with special multi-piece “Illima Forged” wheels wrapped around mud-terrain tires. An over fender kit is also equipped that adds to the overall character of the SUV when viewed from the side. The company offers dual and triple side mufflers as an optional accessory. In the rear, things aren’t very different from the stock SUV. Since it is raised, Wald has managed to install a new full-size bumper, even though it is pretty short and won’t hamper with the departure angles.

There Are No Changes On The Inside

On the inside, the cabin is not very spacious, but it is loaded to the gills in terms of features. This particular model came with stuff like:

  • Leather Upholstery
  • Heated Front And Rear Seats
  • Ventilated Front Seats
  • Illuminated Door Sills
  • Ambient Lighting
  • Sunroof
  • Harmon Kardon surround sound system
  • Navigation System With 40 GB Of Hard Drive Space For Maps And Music
    COMAND Controller

Wald hasn’t made any changes to the cabin, so you can expect only the stuff that comes as standard on the stick Mercedes-AMG G 63.

What Powers The G63 Black Bison Edition?

Just like the cabin, there are no changes made under the hood as well. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 features a 5.5-liter, hand-built, twin-turbocharged V-8 mill that makes 563 ponies and 561 pound-feet of twist.

The low-end torque is fantastic and you have power available at your disposal right from 1,750 rpm. Power is sent to all the wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox. In the stock condition, the SUV can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds. Although the SUV has enough grunt to keep going, Mercedes has installed a speed governor that limits the top speed to 130 mph.

Final Thoughts

Wald International has some wonderful creations in its kitty, but unfortunately, this G 63 isn’t one of them. The cosmetic upgrades seem overdone and mainly ‘attachments’ than full swaps. This makes the overall appearance a little fake and doesn’t give a good finish to the SUV. Once you’re inside the cabin, you won’t feel any difference whatsoever except for the raised ride height. Even the engine is left untouched. Perhaps, some mechanical changes would’ve made it more appealing.
