The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe is, by most accounts, a slick-looking performance coupe-SUV. But like most vehicles — and that includes performance-spec models — there are ways to make a model like the AMG GLC 63 S better. There are ways to make it look better, and, certainly, there are ways to make it perform better.

Noted Mercedes tuner Lorinser took up the task of transforming the AMG GLC 63 into a better all-around coupe SUV. The German tuner is known for its programs for Silver Arrow models so this new aftermarket kit for the high-powered GLC should be a walk in the park, right? Right? What kind of aesthetic improvements did Lorinser do on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe?

On the coupe SUV itself, Lorinser’s only contribution to the tuning cause is the carbon fiber side mirror caps. That’s essentially it. The rest of the AMG GLC 63 S Coupe’s body remains intact so don’t expect anything out of the ordinary in this department. Perhaps leaving the body of the SUV alone was Lorinser’s way of shining the spotlight on the real items it wants the showcase: the wheels.

What you’re looking at is a set of the tuner’s new LM24 alloy wheels. The wheel set was introduced earlier this year and it’s available for both the SUV and coupe SUV versions of the GLC. On the latter, the wheels measure 21 inches in the front and back, and if you’re not a fan of the hyper silver finish that’s shown in the press photos, you can for an alternate black finish.

At the very least, it’s nice that Lorinser is offering those options because the wheels themselves don’t look all that appealing.

To be blunt about it, they don’t look good on the AMG GLC 63 S Coupe. I’ll take it a step further; the wheels don’t look good on any of Mercedes' or Mercedes-AMG’s SUVs.

Can the engine upgrade program make up for the set of wheels?

I suppose we can thank the good Lord that Lorinser also added an engine upgrade program for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe. Without it, I don’t know what to make of this program for the performance coupe SUV. Fortunately, the German tuner is offering a power module for the AMG GLC 63 S Coupe’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that adds a hefty amount of power to the coupe SUV’s cause.

Lorinser didn’t reveal any performance numbers, but you can expect the tuned AMG GLC 63 S Coupe to be faster to 60 mph than the 3.8 seconds it takes the standard model to reach that mark. Perhaps the Lorinser-tuned coupe SUV can do the same deed in around 3.6 seconds? That’s certainly in play, as is a top speed of more than 174 mph, which happens to be the top speed of the standard AMG GLS 63 S Coupe.

All told, Lorinser’s engine upgrade program for the Mercedes-AMG coupe SUV makes up for the tuner’s curious choice of wheels.

How much does the whole program cost?

Combine the cost of the carbon fiber mirror caps — €799 ($914) — with the cost of the new set of wheels — €2,900 ($3,312) — and the engine upgrade program — €2,499 ($2,859) — and you’re looking at a total expense of just shy of $7,000. That’s pretty cheap for a tuning program for Lorinser.
