2022 Brabus Crawler

This AMG G63-based Brabus creation is the perfect vehicle for summer fun!

LISTEN 04:23

Summer is just around the corner and all we can think about is outdoor fun. The problem is that there are not many fun buggies out there. The good news is that, like usual, Brabus has our back: the tuner has come up with a hardcore buggy based on the Mercedes-AMG G63.

Limited to only 15 examples, the new Brabus Crawler is priced at €749,000 (almost $800,000 at the current exchange rates). Brabus will build five copies in 2022, five in 2023, and the final five in 2024. Unfortunately, the buggy is not street legal.

What powers the Brabus Crawler?

The G63 AMG is powered by a 4.0-liter, Biturbo V-8 engine that delivers 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. For the Crawler Brabus opted for the same engine used in the 900 Rocket: a 4.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. The updated engine includes forged pistons with a diameter of 84 millimeters (3.3 in), precision-balanced special piston rods, and a special billet crankshaft with a stroke of 100 millimeters (3.9 in).

As you must’ve noticed, the displacement has been also increased from 4.0 to 4.5 liters. The tuner has also opted for a high-performance exhaust system that ends with special downpipes with a diameter of 76 millimeters (3 in) and metal catalysts.

As a result, the V-8 engine delivers a total of 888 horsepower and 922 pound-feet of torque. However, as was the case with many other Brabus vehicles, peak torque was limited to only 774 pound-feet of torque.

The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is made in 3.4 seconds, but the top speed is limited to 160 km/h (100 mph) for safety reasons.

What other changes are offered?

Of course, in order to build a buggy, Brabus had to remove all the body panels, including the doors and the windows, while all the remaining components were made out of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber hood features two air intakes at the front that helps cool the V-8. The carbon fiber front and rear wheel arches are wider to accommodate the new wheels and tires, whereas the carbon-fiber roof panel offers the best protection against solar heat. A carbon-fiber rear wing adds a sporty touch, while two powerful LED panels integrated into the roof skin offer the best view at night.

The Crawler measures 182 inches in length, 82.9 inches in width, and 92 inches in height. But, the best part is that it has a ground clearance of 20.8 inches - a lot higher than the G63’s 9.49 inches. Also, just for the sake of comparison, the Ford Bronco has a ground clearance of 11.6 inches and Jeep Wrangler of 10.8 inches.

Another important change was made on the weight side. While the G63 has a total weight pf 2,485 kg (5,478 lbs), the Crawler, after all the changes, weighs only 2,065 kilograms (4,553 pounds). That’s more than 900 pounds lighter than the vehicle it is based on.

The Crawler rides on a new set of 20-inch forged wheels wrapped in 40 x 13.50 R20 tires. In order to offer the best off-roading experience, Brabus also installed a special tubular frame designed using state-of-the-art CAD technology and an updated suspension. Special shock absorbers were also necessary and they are four-way adjustable: for high and low speed and in twelve clicks each for compression and rebound.

The interior offers room for the driver and a maximum of three passengers. They will enjoy carbon racing seats covered in bright red Silvertex fabric and with four-point seatbelts. The same red paint was used for the pedals, the driver footrest, and a few other elements.
