Mercedes has refreshed its AMG-spec GT 4-Door Coupé for the 2022 model year. It comes with a few nips and tucks on the inside and out, while the engine outputs are carried over as it is. But, there are some other new additions under the skin. The V-8 models now feature an adaptive suspension setup, active rear-axle steering, and heated steering wheel. The automaker has even introduced a new MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Edition package for the mid- GT 53 trim that features a new exterior shade.

The four-door coupé is based on the two-door GT and is a better, practical option in the broader sense. It is now being offered with three new two new wheel options – 20-inch, 10-twin-spoke wheels, and 21-inch forged wheels for the 63 S model. The latter set is also part of a new package, more of which is mentioned later. The brake calipers can be had in red, if you’re looking for sportier vibes.

For the 2022 model, Mercedes has introduced three new exterior shades that join the existing palette of eight shades. These new shades are:

  • Starling Blue Metallic
  • MANUFAKTUR Starling Blue Magno (matte finish)
  • MANUFAKTUR Cashmere White Magno (matte finish)

Two new combinations are offered: Exclusive Nappa Leather in Titanium Grey Pearl / Black with contrasting yellow stitching and Exclusive Nappa Leather in Auburn Brown / Black in Style finish with diamond stitching. Five other upholstery options are now available for the GT 63 and GT 63 S:

  • Sienna Brown
  • Classic Red
  • Yacht Blue
  • Deep White
  • Neva Grey

Mercedes has retained the same trims this time around too. There are two engine options are offered in different states of tune on all four models.

The GT 43 and GT 53 trims are powered by a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder turbocharged mill. They come with a nine-speed SpeedShift automatic gearbox and the 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.

The GT 43 trim makes 362 horses between 5,500- and 6,100 rpm, and 369 pound-feet of twist between 1,800- and 4,500 rpm.

The GT 53 churns out 429 horses at 6,100 rpm and 384 pound-feet of torque. The torque bandwidth here is very impressive, with the car maintaining its peak oomph between 1,800- and 5,800 rpm. The outputs on both the trims are supplemented by an additional 21 horses and 184 pound-feet torque courtesy of a starter-generator.

The GT 43 takes 4.8 seconds to 60 mph from rest and has an electronically limited top speed of 167 mph. The GT 53 is quicker and faster, taking 4.4 seconds from 0-60 mph and going all the way up to 174 mph between the speed governor kicks in.

The GT 63 and GT 63 S come with a Biturbo V-8 engine under the hood that displaces four liters. Mercedes said the specs for the 2022 model for the V-8 engine will be revealed later. But, we don’t expect any change in the power outputs. These two trims also feature a nine-speed SpeedShift auto transmission and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.

In the GT 63 trim, this handcrafted engine dishes out 577 ponies between 5,500- and 6,500 rpm, and 590 pound-feet of oomph between 2,350- and 5,000 rpm. The GT 63 S trim, on the other hand, makes 630 horses between 5,500- and 6,500 rpm and 664 pound-feet of torque between 2,500- and 4,500 rpm.

The GT 63 takes 3.3 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from a standstill, whereas the GT 63 S is two-tenths of a second quicker, taking 3.1 seconds to hit the speed mark.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe

The BMW M8 Gran Coupe is slightly smaller than the Mercedes sedan, but it comes with a stonker of an engine and feels luxurious on the inside. While looks are subjective, it seems to be more appealing aesthetically. The Mercedes GT 4-Door Coupé now comes with a bench seat, too, but earlier this was an advantage the Bimmer held over its German counterpart. It features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a smaller 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Under the hood, the M8 Gran Coupe features a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine that generates 617 horses. This is around 17 horses more than before, courtesy of the Competition package now offered as standard. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but it allows you to power only the rear wheels if you’re in the mood for some fun. The estimated 0-60 mph time is three seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 156 mph, but can be unlocked up to 190 mph.

The 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe starts at $130,000.

Audi RS7 Sportback

The RS7 is Audi’s offering to the segment and it takes the cake in many aspects. If you take the GT 4-Door Coupé’s six-pot mills out of the equation, it offers the best bang for the buck. On the outside, it looks more like a hatch, but that ensures it offers the best cargo space amongst the three. But, the Audi RS6 Avant has cannibalized into its sales, since it features the same engine, power specs, and performance figures, but is cheaper and an even more practical option.

It is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 591 ponies and 590 pound-feet of oomph. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox along with a Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It comes with an RS-tuned adaptive air suspension setup, too. The RS7 takes 3.5 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from rest and has a top speed of 174 mph. It unlocks to 190 mph when you opt for the Ceramic brakes package.

The 2021 Audi RS7 Sportback starts at $114,000.
