When Mercedes comes up with new models, the thing that gets our hearts racing more than the product itself is the fact that AMG would’ve started working on a higher-performance version of the same. This time, it’s the Mercedes-AMG S63 with an electric twist. The super sedan was spotted with camouflage performing cold-weather tests in Sweden recently. The biggest twist here is that it is a plug-in hybrid version, which means it will be more fuel-efficient and environment-conscious, and quite sprightly in terms of performance.

Exterior

The new Mercedes S-Class was revealed not too long back. So, we do have a template of what the AMG S63e PHEV would look like. It’s going to sport the Panamericana grille up front along with a redesigned and slightly sharper bumper. You can see the car riding on different wheel designs, too, and both of them look equally hot. The car also rides on bigger brakes.

There’s a charging port on the left rear wing, which gave it away that this is an environmentally friendly AMG S-Class. Other changes on the outside include the diffuser between the quad-pipe exhaust system. Not to mention, it sits lower than the standard S-Class.

Interior

There are no pictures of the cabin, but it isn’t going to be any less luxurious than the standard S63 AMG. Stuff like heated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, seats with massage functions, and soft-close doors among other things are sure to be present. As for the multimedia function, there will be a digital driver’s display and a touchscreen infotainment system, probably 12.3 inches each (if not bigger) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, COMAND navigation, etc.

Drivetrain

It makes 603 horses and 664 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all the wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. It takes just 3.5 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from a standstill. The car delivers 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

In the case of the S63e PHEV, it is expected to feature an electric motor on the rear axle that makes around 134 horses. This means the combined power output is expected to be in the range of 700 horses, but it isn’t going to be the most powerful one. Mercedes is also developing a hotter sedan with AMG that will come with the same internal combustion engine and a motor that churns out 200+ horses. Codenamed the S73e, it is expected to make more than 800 horses.

There’s no word about the battery pack and the fuel economy, but it could adopt the same battery that’s also used in the Mercedes S580e – a 28 kWh pack. This is good enough for 62 miles of electric-only range as per the WLTP cycle. You could expect a range in the ballpark for the S63e, too.

Pricing

There’s no word on this either, but it will be much more expensive than the AMG S63. The 2020 AMG S63 comes with a starting sticker price of $151,600.
