IWC Schaffhausen Pays Tribute To AMG's 50th Anniversary The Only Way It Knows How

IWC Schaffhausen Pays Tribute To AMG’s 50th Anniversary The Only Way It Knows How

Only 250 watches will be made and five of them come with the AMG GT3 racers

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating AMG’s 50th anniversary in style, and now that Swiss watchmaker IWC is involved, that statement can be taken quite literally. The Swiss-based premium timepiece company has served as the official timekeeper for Mercedes-AMG since 2004. IWC is marking the celebration with a special edition version of its Ingenieur watch.

The watch is low-key compared to what we’ve become used to when automakers collaborate with watchmakers. Often times, these collaborations result in outlandish-looking watches that are either decked in fancy trim, have elaborate straps, or are just look plain bonkers. But IWC opted for a subtle approach with its AMG anniversary watch, resisting the urge to be flamboyant and instead opt for class and sophistication. The result is a watch that showcases the style, grace, and all-around performance that AMG has been known to provide for the last five decades. Only 250 examples of the IWC Ingenieur Chronograph will be made. And while there’s still no price on these limited edition watches, we do know five of them came with the special edition AMG GT3 race cars Mercedes-AMG unveiled at the Nürburgring in May.

Mercedes Teams With Pebble to Produce a Smartwatch Application

Mercedes Teams With Pebble to Produce a Smartwatch Application

Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with smartwatch company, Pebble, to create what the former is calling a chance to "develop innovative integrated applications" for the Pebble smartwatch. It’s not the kind of collaboration that you normally see between a car manufacturer and a timepiece company because there’s really no special-edition watch that Pebble will release in its partnership with Mercedes.

Instead, Mercedes and Pebble are creating a system that will allow the German automaker to integrate its DigitalDriveStyle app with a number of Pebble smartwatches, which will allow users to integrate their watches with their Mercedes vehicles.

The full scope of features will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show, but early hints coming from Mercedes suggests that users can do an assortment of things with the Pebble smartwatches, including getting important information like fuel levels, door-lock status and vehicle locations from their watches by just glancing at it. Another unique feature of the integrated system is that it’s capability to alert drivers of any upcoming obstacles on the road, including accidents and road construction.

It’s a cool new technological device that we’re curious to see at CES this January. Hopefully, this partnership bears fruit for Mercedes and Pebble smartwaches in the future.

Video: Hamilton and IWC Recreate the 1934 Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow Hillclimb

Video: Hamilton and IWC Recreate the 1934 Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow Hillclimb

Germany was actually a very humble place in all the interwar and post-war periods of the twentieth century. These hard-working people loved industry from the clang of first steel horseshoe on stone streets.

In 1934, a Mercedes Silver Arrow W25 won the famous Klausenpass hill-climb event, plus four other important races.

The SIlver Arrow’s sleek styling and high-speed mission was the Pagani Zonda R of its time. Or perhaps the Bloodhound SSC.

The Klausenpass hill climb is 14 miles long and in 1934 the Silver Arrow managed to run it in 15 minutes and 22.2 seconds.

Now, Mercedes in and IWC Watches have teamed up to recreate the famous run on the Swiss Alpine course.

IWC, sharp-eyed readers may recall, makes the elegant new boxed timepiece in the center of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S-Model driven earlier this week.

The video begins with Mercedes-Benz’s resident F1 hero. Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton and the Silver Arrow are just about the epitome of modern, thriving and also deeply humble Germany.

The W25 prepared for the 1934 season weighted only 750 kilos (1653 pounds) and was powered by a supercharged Straight-8 M25 engine with an output of 300 horsepower. The W25 remained into the racing world until 1937, during which period it was updated with a more powerful 4.3 liter supercharged inline-eight engine with an output of 490 horsepower.

Concept watch "Silver Arrow" GT Series

Concept watch "Silver Arrow" GT Series

We see a lot of concept cars here and there in the auto industry, but it’s very rare to see a concept watch come across our pages. The famous French designer Fabien Cacheux has unveiled the new "Silver Arrow" GT Series concept watch in honor of the new Mercedes SLS AMG. You may have seen some of his previous work in the famous Bugatti 16 C Galibier watch.

The new Silver Arrow GT Series watch features a central tourbillon, power reserve, and a tachometer needle’s three star-shaped reflecting the emblem of the brand. The power reserve is at 6 o’clock. The bracelet is made of titanium neoprene and opens and closes like the butterfly doors of the Mercedes. The two buttons (Open / Close) surrounding the crown can open and close the car remotely.

This idea is similar to the one of the Aston Martin DBS Volante Watch which can also open and close the doors of the DBS in addition to turning the lights on and off.

The "Silver Arrow" GT Series concept watch is as good of an idea as any other watch that has seen production, but, as we mentioned earlier, the decision to produce this timepiece is still up in the air.
