2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA is here and it borrows a lot of design cues and tech from its larger peers

Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the new GLA, the A-Class-based crossover whose first-generation was a popular choice among buyers. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA, however, takes a lot after its bigger brothers design- and tech-wise, and that’s a very good thing.

The new GLA is 4.1 inches higher (now 63.4 inches) and 0.6 inches shorter (now 173.6 inches) than the model it replaces. This means you get more headroom, but Mercedes-Benz highlights that now there’s even more legroom in the rear (38.4 inches, compared to 33.9 inches in the previous model). The U.S.-bound 2021 GLA has an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.30, which will contribute to low levels of wind noise inside the cabin as well as a reduction in fuel consumption at higher speeds. What’s more, Mercedes is so confident that the GLA can pull its own weight off the beaten path that it offers the Off-Road Engineering Package as standard on the GLA 4Matic.

On the inside, the GLA receives the highly-acclaimed MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment setup. Rear headroom, however, takes a 0.3-inch plunge (now 38.1 inches instead of 38.4), but shoulder room is more generous (now 54.8 inches instead of 53.1 inches, a 1.7-inch increase). Trunk capacity is also better in the new GLA, measuring 15.4 cubic feet, a 0.5 cubic feet increase from the previous model’s 14.9 cubic feet rating.

The safety bundle is a hefty one, especially if you opt for the optional Driver Assistance Package. Here’s what you get:

In the U.S., the non-AMG 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA can be had with a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter, turbocharged gasoline engine bolted to an eight-speed 8G-DCT automatic transmission. The powerplant makes 221 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque between 1,620 rpm and 4,000 rpm. You can pick between the GLA 250 or the AWD GLA 250 4Matic. Performance-wise, Mercedes-Benz estimates that the 2021 GLA needs 8.6 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill en route to a top speed of 130 miles per hour.

No words on pricing yet, but the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA launches in the U.S. in the summer of 2020, so we’ll know more as its market debut closes in.

Performance wagon fans from the U.S. have missed yet another enticing, fun new model, in the form of the new (second generation) Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake. More specifically, one of the AMG-tuned performance versions, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35. The sleek new CLA load lugger is quite a pretty car, with a striking interior, and this AMG version also adds proper poke and cornering ability into the mix.

Power comes from a 302 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder that sends its power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Naturally, since it is an AMG mode, it features styling tweaks and upgrades to set it apart from CLA Shooting Brake examples and the same goes for the interior. It’s a car that packs a proper punch, but it’s also practical, very stylish and very modern-feeling inside too. None of the modifications are over the top, though, because, as you might know, this is the lesser of the two AMG versions of the CLA wagon and the design needs to reflect this.

For most people, the more powerful Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Shooting Brake will be too much, not necessarily in terms of looks, because that model doesn’t look significantly more extreme than the CLA 35, but in terms of mixing sporty looks and performance. The CLA 35 will undeniably be more popular primarily because it looks pretty much the same as the CLA 45 and most buyers won’t feel the need for the extra 100 horsepower that the more powerful version offers and the inherent extra performance.

A baby G-Class for the masses

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB is a small crossover that slots between the company’s smallest SUV offerings yet, the 2019 GLA and the 2019 GLC. The 2020 GLB is based on the new platform underpinning the latest A-Class and B-Class, and was previewed by the 2019 Concept GLB at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. The GLB stands out compared to the GLA and GLC due to a much boxier design. The crossover is often referred to as the baby G-Class, despite sharing underpinnings with the tiny A-Class and B-Class hatchbacks.

Rumors about a new compact SUV surfaced all the way back in 2012 when Mercedes unveiled the Ener-G-Force Concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Created by the company’s Advanced Design Studio in Carlsbad, California, it looked like a futuristic version of the G-Class and had a hydrogen-powered drivetrain. The rumors turned into certainty when a small but boxy crossover was spotted testing on public roads, but the hydrogen drivetrain was dropped in favor of conventional engines. With one in three Mercedes-Benz cars now an SUV, and one in four a compact model, Mercedes-Benz thinks that a compact SUV like the GLB "combines all the success factors of the company’s highest-volume segments." The four-door coupe features CLS-inspired styling and technology from the S-Class

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA was unveiled at 2019 Consumer Electronics Show.The revised four-door coupe replaces the highly successful first-generation CLA, introduced all the way back in 2013. Just like its predecessor, the 2020 CLA competes in a very tight niche that only includes the Audi A3 Sedan. However, the 2020 CLA may have what it takes to compete against the slightly larger 2019 BMW 3 Series. Based on the same platform that underpins the latest A-Class hatchback and sedan models, the CLA boasts a notable design inside and out. It combines features seen on the A-Class and CLS on the outside, while the interior comes from the smaller of the two. Like most recently unveiled Mercs, the CLA features all the cool technology found in the bigger E-Class and S-Class models, including the semi-autonomous driving system. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake is a coupe-style, station wagon version of the regular 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA. It’s based on the second-generation 2020 CLA, which was unveiled in January 2019. The 2020 CLA Shooting Brake broke cover at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show with identical specifications and drivetrains. But the Shooting Brake benefits from the longer roof, which translates into enhanced luggage room. The engine lineup includes a variety of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines. The third-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class arrived at the 2018 Paris Motor Show to replace a dated seven-year-old model. Just like its predecessor, it competes in the subcompact MPV segment. Essentially a bigger A-Class, it combines the utility of a small crossover with the sporty stance of a hatchback, and, thanks to its latest update, technology from the company’s bigger vehicles.

Developed to give the slightly newerBMW 2 Series Active Tourer a run for its money, the third-generation B-Class sets a new benchmark on the executive MPV market. Just like the latest A-Class, it features an interior design based on larger sedan like the E-Class and S-Class, as well as semi-autonomous driving tech. Unfortunately, the B-Class will remain a European vehicle for the most part as Mercedes-Benz has no plans to bring it to the United States.

Just the right stuff to keep it at the front

If Mercedes-Benz ever decided to make a greatest hits album, the C-Class would undoubtedly be one of the top tracks. Originally offered in the early ’90s as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz 190 series, the C-Class is framed as the German brand’s entry-level luxury four-door compact. A second generation arrived in 2000, followed by a third-gen in 2007 and a fourth-gen in 2014. Now, as the fourth-gen C-Class enters its fifth year of production, it takes a spot in Merc’s lineup as the brand’s best-selling model, moving a total of 415,000 units in markets worldwide last year. That’s a huge volume for a single model. As such, Mercedes is looking to keep it feeling as fresh as possible, and will give it a slew of new updates to keep buyers coming back for more. The latest includes tweaked exterior styling, an updated interior, new infotainment gear, new safety and assistance tech, and even an extra splash of power as well. All good stuff, if you ask us.

The latest 2019 model year for the C-Class will appear in the metal for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show, where Merc will also pull the sheets on the new A-Class, the new G-Class, and the new AMG GT Coupe. While a full generational changeover is expected in a few years’ time, this new model definitely keeps that old C-Class magic we’ve come to expect, while also adding all the extra goodies needed to keep it in the running with the competition. Gorgeous looks and features from the bigger luxury Mercs

The third-generation A-Class has been around for only six years as of 2018, and Mercedes-Benz has already launched a redesigned model. That’s not exactly surprising though, as the Germans are looking to replace each model after a six-year cycle in the future and the A-Class is one of the first to be part of this strategy. Spotted stretching its wheels in Europe since early 2017, the new-generation A-Class broke cover in February 2018, about one month before its public debut at the 2018 Geneva Auto Show. And by the looks of things, the competition doesn’t stand a chance against it.

The interesting thing about the upcoming A-Class, aside from the usual upgrades involving sportier looks, a refined, roomier interior, and more powerful and efficient engines, is that it will get a sedan version. The three-box model was previewed by the A-Class Sedan Concept in 2017 and as it turns out, it shares quite a lot of design features with the new hatchback. Inspired by the new CLS, the A-Class Sedan wasn’t just a fancied up concept, with most of its features transferred on the production five-door model. But until the four-door arrives to take on the Audi A3 Sedan and the China-only BMW 1 Series Sedan, let’s have a closer look at the most technologically advanced premium hatchback on the market.

A little sportscar soul in a brawny SUV

Let’s get this out of the way up-front: I don’t “get” the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe or its cohort of other luxury-brand SUVs that have sporty, coupe-like rooflines. And I have not had the pleasure of driving most of the GLC 300 Coupe’s competition: sport-tinged SUVs like the BMW X4 and Porsche Macan come to mind.

These are intended to be more fashionable, driver-centric versions of their boxy-backed, taller SUV sisters. To that end, the GLC 300 Coupe was pretty fun to drive, as SUVs go. But it probably makes some cargo space and headroom sacrifices compared to the non-Coupe GLC 300. After all, as with fashionable clothing, sometimes it’s necessary to sacrifice comfort for vanity.

May the 4th be with you, lucky customers in Japan

You know a film franchise has become completely larger than life when businesses from unrelated sectors are trying to attach their names on a fan-created celebratory day that itself has taken a life of its own. This is what Star Wars has become and the importance of today, May 4, among the franchise’s legion of fans has spurred companies to celebrate “May the 4th Be With You” on their own terms. Take Mercedes-Benz for example. The German automaker has been involved with the franchise in the past in some capacity, but now it’s taking its involvement to new heights with the introduction of a pair of special edition CLA180 models that celebrate Star Wars Day.

This is not a gimmick, people. These two special edition Mercedes CLA180 models are legitimate, and they’re set to be offered as exclusives in Japan. Yes, Japan’s getting another special edition car. Different issue for a different day though. What’s important is that Japanese customers who are interested in the new special edition CLA180 actually have a choice of getting a car that’s inspired by either Darth Vader or a Stormtrooper. More importantly, both versions come packed with plenty of Star Wars references so no matter what color of the CLA180 is chosen, buyers will get their fill of Star Wars-related features on both models. About the only downside to these SEs is the aforementioned lack of availability in other markets. I don’t know if Mercedes knows this, but Star Wars has one of the biggest fan bases in the world. It would’ve probably been a better idea to offer a Star Wars-inspired SE model in more markets than just Japan.

You’ll get what you pay for with this tuning kit

It’s hard to believe that the Mercedes A-Class was three generations in before Mercedes decided it was a good idea to wring up a hot rod version for the hatchback. But it did when it presented the A45 AMG back in 2013. It was a long time in the making and in the three years since, the A45 AMG has already been subjected to a rebrand – it’s now called the Mercedes-AMG A45 – and an update. That’s not to say that the car has failed to live up to expectations because it has, or at least it has in the context of it turning into an aftermarket darling where tuners like Brabus, Vath, and Posaidon have already built specific programs for it.

This time though, hot hatch tuner extraordinaire Speed-Buster takes center stage and it has what might be considered one of the best “value-for-money” tuning kits for the AMG A45. It’s true because the only thing the tuner is offering is its Chiptuning plug-and-play module. That’s it. No exterior upgrades, no dressed-up interiors, and certainly no fancy wheels. But it does have that engine upgrade, and for what it’s worth both literally and figuratively, it definitely lives up to its part by giving the AMG A45 a stout increase in power and performance.

But the real question is this: does Speed-Buster’s program equate to a better value than what rivals Brabus, Vath, and Posaidon have offered? That answer might depend on your perspective. Just know that with this kit, you’re guaranteed to get exactly what you pay for it.

Merc’s resident "pocket Hercules" gets more muscles

The Mercedes-AMG A45 has only been around for a couple of years and yet, it’s already been the recipient of a facelift. That’s what happens when you belong in a segment as competitive as the premium hot hatchback market. As competitive as automakers like Mercedes, Audi, and BMW are, the same holds true for aftermarket tuners, especially those who specialize in any of these three German brands. Such is the case with Posaidon, which is following up the release of its RS850+ tuning kit for the Mercedes-AMG E 63 by introducing the RS450+ program for Mercedes’ resident performance hatch. The tuner claims that it can squeeze out 500 horsepower and 409 pound-feet of torque out of the AMG A45’s turbo four engine, making it one of the most powerful kits for the AMT hatch.

Posaidon may not be as much of a household name as Brabus when it comes to Mercedes tuning, but it does have a penchant for delivering the goods. It proved as much when it presented the RS850+ program last month and this particular program has the tools to be a worthy follow-up. There’s not much in the way of other upgrades for the AMG A45, but there is that impressive engine upgrade, which ought to be worth the price of the whole kit considering how much extra power it can provide to performance-hungry owners of the hot hatch.

The tuner does have other services to offer, most of which are available on a per request basis. That might not be an ideal setup for some owners, but for those looking to really customize their AMG A45s to fit their personalities, it’s a chance to really stamp some identity into those premium performance hatchbacks.

A new AMG body kit is now available for the Mercedes A-Class

A while back, Mercedes-AMG released a body kit for the C-Class that brought a new front spoiler, side skirts, and rear diffuser, among other things. Due to the overwhelming success of the offering, Mercedes-AMG as decided to expand its offering to the A-Class – specifically the A 250 Sport 4MATIC and other A-Class models equipped with AMG-Line.

These new panels are designed by AMG to offer a unique and individual look for the little hatch and are now available for purchase and installation at all Mercedes dealerships. Due to the overall design of the body kit, installation is very simple, thus, less time consuming. Because of how they are made, they come from the factory with a gloss-black finish and don’t require any painting. There are five parts available in total, all available for individual purchase depending on customer interest.

The body kit offering will eventually extend to other Mercedes models like the C-Class Cabriolet and the CLA saloon sometime in the middle of this year. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, though, let’s take a look at the A-Class with the full body kit installed and talk a little about what it offers in terms of uniqueness and individuality.

Mercedes has released details on new body accessories for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and they look to add C63-style visual flair to the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport 4MATIC and AMG Line models with six new exterior parts. The visual garnish will be sold on the German market, and there are currently no details on availability outside Germany.

AMG is Mercedes’ racing tuning division, so the new pieces appropriately add a good deal of performance intent to the already sporty luxury four-door. The new kit was created specifically for those looking for a model that looks quicker than the regular C-Class, but is still a bit tamer to drive than the big-power 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63. A poser, basically.

Essentially, these accessories are AMG’s answer to BMW’s M Performance line and Audi’s S line.

The parts only affect the way the C-Class looks, leaving good enough alone in the cabin space and drivetrain. But the real question is – does it work?

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II

Homologation special. It’s not a term that gets applied to cars much anymore, but it’s brought us some great ones. Think, 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, 1981-1991 Audi Sport Quattro, and 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS. The idea is to require a manufacturer to build ‘x’ number of road-going versions of whatever car it wants to take racing. It prevents engineers from coming up with anything too crazy and forms a tangible link between what fans see on the track and what they can put in their driveways. Then, a company like Toyota comes along and builds two road-going GT-One Le Mans racers and blows up the entire notion.

Then there’s the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Debuting in 1990, the Evo II, as it came to be called, was designed to do one thing: beat BMW in Germany’s DTM touring car race series. Unlike the DTM of today, which is comprised of carbon-chassis, purpose-built silhouette racecars, the DTM of the early ’90s was populated with cars built on road-car platforms and powered by road-car engines.

After getting trounced by BMW M3s and the odd Ford Sierra Cosworth during the 1989 DTM season, Mercedes went to work updating its 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution. The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show ahead of the 1990 season, with more power and a wild new body kit. All 502 road cars required for homologation sold out before it was even unveiled. At around the same time, AMG (still an independent company) went to work converting an allotment of Evo IIs to race cars.

The Evo II debuted in the third round of the 1990 season at the Nürburgring with Kurt Thiim behind the wheel. Thim went on to finish the season in third behind championship winner Hans-Joachim Stuck in an Audi V8 quattro and second-place Johnny Cecotto in a BMW M3 Sport Evolution. Things went a bit better in 1991, when Klaus Ludwig drove his Mercedes to second overall, again behind an Audi, but the Evo II didn’t hit its stride until the 1992 season, when Mercedes drivers Klaus Ludwig, Kurt Thiim and Bernd Schneider swept the top three championship spots.

Because of its extremely low volume and ridiculously high cost when new (reportedly $80,000 in 1990), the Evo II road cars didn’t enjoy the same exposure as the BMW M3, but those same factors are what make it so desirable and collectible 25 years after it was first built.

2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Now in its third generation, the smallest model in the Mercedes-Benz range has just received its mid-cycle refresh. The timing may seem odd for some people, as the latest A-Class was only unveiled back in 2012, but recent reports have made it clear that Mercedes-Benz is pushing for a slightly shorter shelf life for its models, down from the regular seven years to only six. The 2016 A-Class comes to confirm that Stuttgart is already making use of this strategy.

Even though this is the third-ever A-Class, it actually represents the first time that Mercedes-Benz has ventured into the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series segment, unless you also count the ill-fated C-Class SportCoupe or the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLC and the subsequent CLC. Based on a platform called MFA (Modular Front-Wheel-Drive Architecture), the latest A-Class shares most of its underpinnings with the entire compact lineup from Mercedes-Benz, namely the B-Class, GLA-Class, CLA-Class and CLA Shooting Brake.

Essentially sporting a front-wheel-drive architecture, some of its versions also offer a 4MATIC-badged AWD system, something which it desperately needs in its higher-powered variants like the awesome A45 AMG. As expected, the mid-cycle refresh did not change much in terms of exterior or interior design, while most of last year’s engines are carried over with slight improvements.
