2020 Mercedes Vision AVTR - A Look Into the Impossible Future
The Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR is a futuristic concept car that explores new design options and technologies, as well as the "vision of designers, engineers, and trend researches for mobility in the distant future." The AVTR name stands for Advanced Vehicle Transformation, but it also represents the company’s collaboration with the team that produced Avatar, a science fiction film directed and produced by James Cameron and released in 2009. While previous Vision concepts from Mercedes-Benz were also futuristic, they still featured technologies and styling cues linked to production cars, while some of the design actually made it on vehicles you can buy in dealerships. The Vision AVTR is an entirely different story as its features and technologies won’t be transferred to production cars in the near future.
2019 Mercedes-Benz Vision Simplex Concept
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Vision Simplex is a concept car that the German company introduced at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The show car pays homage to the iconic Mercedes 35 HP race car from 1901, an automobile that previewed the Mercedes Simplex, a production road car the German firm built from 1902 to 1909. A retro-inspired two-seater, the Vision Simplex brings the 35 HP into the future through a sleeker look, modern technology, and state-of-the-art craftsmanship.
The Vision Simplex joins a long list of Vision-branded concept cars that started with the Vision SLA in 2000 and includes the AMG Vision Gran Turismo coined in 2013. The Vision Simplex follows the Vision Van of 2016 and the Vision EQS of 2019, the latter being a preview of an all-electric S-Class sedan. Will the Vision Simplex spawn a production model? Definitely not, but it’s one of the coolest concepts around. Let’s have a closer look.
Sometimes it feels like there are more futuristic concepts floating around that there are modern cars on the road. While that may not really be the case, there certainly isn’t a deficit of concepts that represent what automakers see in their future. Not all of them are crazy, though, and that’s exactly what brings me to the concept we’re talking about today: The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS. This specific concept is actually, in at least some way, shape, or form, representative of a future electric model equivalent to the S-Class Saloon. If the production version of the EQS follows the same suit as the new EQC SUV, then it won’t look a whole lot like this concept, but that’s a story for a different time. For now, let’s take a closer look at the Mercedes Vision EQS and see what Mercedes expects out of the full-size electric saloon of the future.
2019 Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB
The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB is a concept vehicle that previews a new crossover from the German company. As the name suggests, the GLB is the SUV equivalent of the B-Class compact; thus the production model will slot between the existing GLA and GLC, corresponding to the A-Class and C-Class, respectively. The concept vehicle was unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show in near-production-ready form.
Notably larger than the GLA, the Concept GLB is actually almost as big as the GLC. But the crossover stands out through its boxy design cues. Although it’s not the baby G-Class it was rumored at first, it’s notably boxier than the coupe-styled GLA, and it also feels more utilitarian than the GLC. The concept features a production-ready design, it’s equipped with technology already available in Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and comes with a production four-cylinder engine under the hood. 2018 Mercedes EQ Silver Arrow
Mercedes has unveiled the Vision EQ Silver Arrows Concept, and it is a stunner. The concept is a feast for the senses, a product of Mercedes’ masterful use of its own heritage and reinventing it with a futuristic electric-jolted twist. As it is, the EQ Silver Arrow is a showcase concept — and what a concept, it is — that we’ll never see in production form. The good news is that the concept isn’t just a muscle-flexing design exercise, too. Parts of the concept will appear in Mercedes’ new electric brand offshoot, EQ. As to what those parts are? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
2018 Mercedes X-Class Camper Concept
The new Mercedes X-Class is lustful looking machine with an upscale vibe typical of the three-pointed start mixed with rugged capability thanks to its body-on-frame architecture and beefy solid rear axle. And despite the X-Class still being extremely new, aftermarket companies are already building interesting products for the pickup. Perhaps the most interesting is this – a slide in camper build specifically to the X-Class’ bed dimensions.
The camper is designed and built by the coachbuilder Tischer and features a main sleeping area over the cab, a three-person seating area that converts into a sleeping area, a kitchen with a three-burner stove, and a bathroom with a swivel toilet, fold-away sink, and a shower.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA
Although it has been toying with electric drivetrains for decades, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled more concept cars than production models up until now. The SLS AMG Electric Drive was its first important statement in the world of EVs, followed by the B-Class Electric Drive in 2014. In 2016, Mercedes-Benz announced its first family of battery-powered vehicles, called EQ, and a couple of new concept cars followed. One of them is the EQA, a compact hatchback that looks like an A-Class from the future.
Mercedes’ first EV in the compact segment, the Concept EQA joins Concept EQC, a small SUV that’s scheduled to move into production in 2019. There’s no word as to when the EQA will become a production model, but we do know that the German automaker intends to launch 10 EQ models by 2022. With that in mind, it’s safe to assume that the EQA will be one of the first to enter the market and could arrive in showrooms for the 2020 model year. Until we find out more, let’s have a closer look at the concept car in the review below.

Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA Is an Electric A-Class from the Future
In 2016, Mercedes-Benz unveiled that all of its future electric cars will be sold under the EQ sub-brand. The strategy is similar to BMW’s, which now uses the i sub-brand for its EV lineup, which for the moment includes the i3 and i8. Last year, Mercedes also rolled out the Concept EQ, a sporty SUV that previewed what should become the company’s first all-electric hauler. Come 2017 and Mercedes unleashed its second EQ concept. Dubbed Concept EQA, it’s essentially an electric A-Class hatchback from the future.
A bit too futuristic for Mercedes’ currently lineup, the EQA is here to showcase what the next-generation A-Class could look like. At the same time, it confirms that EQ cars will share the same naming strategy as the regular models. Specifically, much like the all-electric A-Class will be called the EQA, EV versions of the C- and S-Class should be launched as the EQC and EQS. There’s no word as to when the first production EQ car will be launched, but don’t expect the sub-brand to debut sooner than the second half of 2018.

2017 Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet
Revived for the second time in 2014, this time around as Mercedes-Maybach, Stuttgart’s super premium firm is on a roll, now offering no fewer than five different models. There are the S500 and S600 sedans, the longer S600 Pullman, the G650 Landaulet SUV, and the S650 Cabriolet. Maybach is also doing well as far as concept cars go, with the stunning Vision 6 getting everyone excited about a big luxury coupe we might see in showrooms in a few years. Now, Mercedes-Maybach turned the Vision 6 into a convertible, signaling that this concept is moving closer to becoming a production model.
Unveiled at the 2017 Monterey Car Week, the Vision 6 Cabriolet was previewed by a coupe of teasers that made everyone think of something entirely different. While most speculated that Mercedes is launching a brand-new concept, it turned out that Maybach simply chopped the roof off the Vision 6. But while it may sound a bit disappointing, it’s proof that the Germans have big plans for the Vision 6. This could also mean that Maybach may get a standalone model that’s larger and more luxurious than theS-Class Coupe. Just like in the good old days when Maybach was an independent firm and competed against the likes of Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, and Duesenberg. But, until that happens, let’s see what the Vision 6 Cabriolet brings to the table.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan
Mercedes-Benz was quite the busy bee at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, where it unveiled three updated cars, the S-Class, AMG S63, and AMG S65. But, the German firm also showcased a concept, one that may open the door to a new niche. I’m talking about the Concept A Sedan, which provides "an outlook of the next generation of compact vehicles and a potential new body type." In short, Mercedes is considering a sedan version of the A-Class.
Surprisingly enough for a brand that created quite a few niches, most notably with the CLA and CLS four-door coupes, Mercedes is behind the competition when it comes to sedans based on compact hatchbacks. While Audi has been selling the A3 Sedan since 2013 and BMW introduced the 1 Series Sedan in China in 2017, Mercedes has yet to create a sedan version of the A-Class. But it seems the folks over in Stuttgart want to change that, and the A-Class sedan could become a reality with the next-generation model in a couple of years.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GT Concept
It’s been known for quite some time now that Mercedes-AMG had its eye on releasing a four-door performance saloon that would compete against the popular Porsche Panamera. It took some time, but the car finally showed its face at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, albeit in concept guise. Called the AMG GT Concept, the four-door coupe was unveiled as a preview model for the upcoming production version that’s expected to arrive in the next few years.
The significance of the AMG GT Concept isn’t limited to the car simply being a production preview of the yet-to-be-named Panamera fighter. The model is also the latest in a growing family of AMG GT models that’s shaping AMG as a legitimate performance brand that’s slowly gaining independence from Mercedes-Benz. So yes, the AMG GT Concept is a big deal in a lot of ways, as it should be considering Mercedes has some claim to pioneering the performance the four-door saloon market when it first launched the CLS-Class back in 2004.
The times are sure different now as the segment has evolved into a pretty competitive one with the likes of the Porsche Panamera, BMW 7 Series, Maserati Quattroporte, and even the Tesla Model S all making legitimate claims for themselves as worthy options. But don’t sleep on Mercedes returning to form and reclaiming its top spot in this segment. It may do so under a different name, but rest assured, the AMG GT Concept, or at least the production version of it, is going to pick up the fight for the Silver Arrows once it arrives. We’re getting a good look at what we can expect from Mercedes-AMG; now we wait and see for the production model to arrive.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Concept X-Class
Mercedes-Benz Vans has pulled the covers off its all-new pickup, the X-Class. Debuting as a concept in Sweden, the pickup truck gives a glimpse as to what Mercedes will eventually bring to market in late 2017 as a 2018 model. The truck is slotted for markets around the world, including Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Australia. Sadly the U.S. and Canada are not included.
Mercedes brought along two design variants to the October 25, 2016 debut: the “Stylish Explorer” and the “Powerful Adventurer.” Both are based on the same ladder frame platform borrowed from Nissan, but each show Mercedes’ willingness to stretch the pickup beyond a luxury ‘ute or utilitarian tool.
The target audience, according to Mercedes, is a Gen Xer who lives an urban lifestyle yet enjoys outdoor activities like biking, skiing, and hiking. This buyer is also someone who has not previously considered a pickup as a vehicle choice. The automaker sees the mid-size pickup segment growing in the next several years, moving from 800,000 global units sold annually to roughly 2.5 million annual global sales. Mercedes is obviously planning to capture part of that market.
Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said at the debut, "With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio. Our target: we want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment."
Volker Mornhinweg, the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, followed Dr. Z by saying, "We will open up and change the segment of mid-size pickups – with the world’s first true premium pickup for the modern urban lifestyle." Mornhinweg continued, saying, "Our future X-Class will be a pickup that knows no compromise. Ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder engine, and permanent all-wheel drive are compulsory for us. As an added value we bring safety, comfort, agility, and expressive design – in other words, everything that distinguishes vehicles bearing the Mercedes star. We will thus appeal to new customers who have not considered owning a pickup before."
Mercedes certainly sounds confident it can redefine the mid-size segment. Let’s take a deep look at its new X-Class to see if Merc is on the right path.

2016 Mercedes‑Benz "Generation EQ" Concept
Despite the long list of manufacturers that skipped the Paris Auto Show, this year’s show still turned out to be pretty good. We got to lay eyes on cars like the Renault Trezor, the Lexus UX Concept, and the Volkswagen I.D. concept. As far as the internet is concerned, the Honda Civic Type R concept pretty much stole the show, but over at the Mercedes booth was this gem of a concept that is being called the “Generation EQ.” Said to represent a whole fleet of electric cars that Mercedes will produce in the coming years, the EQ features a scalable platform, 402 horsepower from an all-electric drivetrain, and a range of up to 310 miles. Able to hit 62 mph in less than five seconds, Mercedes claims that this concept not only has all-wheel drive but is also near-production ready, so we may even see a production variant in the near future.
If the concepts that have debuted over the past couple years have taught us anything, it’s that the cars of the future will be somewhat crazy and the interiors will look more like something out of a science fiction movie than the reality that we’re used to. But, being almost production ready means that the level of science fiction inside the EQ is kept to a full roar. Sure, that might hurt the Trekkie inside of you a bit, but don’t tear up just yet, the cabin is still pretty wild for something that appears to be exceptionally functional.
Gorden Wagener, the Head of Design for Daimler AG, said, “Generation EQ is hot and cool. Its fascination lies in a reinterpretation of our design philosophy of sensual purity, the aim being to create an avant-garde, contemporary and distinctive electro-look. At the same time, the design of the visionary show car, which has been reduced to the essentials, reveals an alluring progressivity.”
On preliminary inspection, this concept looks very promising and is sure to please the masses if it ever makes it into production. So, before that happens, let’s take a good look at this concept and figure out just what it’s all about.
2016 Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck
Mercedes-Benz has announced an all-electric commercial truck designed to replace
powered trucks on local, short-run delivery routes. It’s called the Urban eTruck and it runs off lithium-ion batteries that power two electric motors at the rear wheels for a clean, quiet, ride with zero local emissions.
The truck is said to have little trade-offs in relation to its diesel and gasoline-powered counterparts. It has a range of up to 124 miles and a maximum payload capacity rivaling diesel trucks. Its cabin comes chocked full of Mercedes’ latest technology from FleetBoard, including real-time traffic information with alternative route planning, driver and dispatcher communications, and emergency route guidance back to home base should the truck run low on its charge.
The Urban eTruck comes with three choices in battery size. The standard setup includes three battery modules with a total capacity of 212 kWh with a range up to 200 kilometers, or 124 miles. Battery modules can be factory ordered for truck with longer delivery routes and those that frequently travel at higher steeds, or trucks with larger payloads but travel fewer miles.
Mercedes says production of this type of truck is conceivable to begin at the start of the next decade. Whether the automaker will achieve that goal is unknown, but knowing how Mercedes generally succeeds at its goals, it’s likely vehicles like the Urban eTruck will become a reality.
This product concept comes on the heels of Tesla’s “Master Plan, Part Deux,” which details the electric automaker’s plans for building all-electric commercial trucks and public transportation. Undoubtedly Elon Musk has to feel the pressure.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6
The 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was packed with numerous new products from various automakers, mostly in concept form. Among them is Mercedes-Benz, which showcased a brand-new concept car wearing the "Maybach" badge. It goes by the name Vision 6 and it’s the wildest vehicle to feature the Maybach name in the modern era. Not only spectacular on the outside, the German coupe sports the latest technology Mercedes-Benz has to brag about. It’s also pretty massive for a two-door coupe. And by "massive" we mean it’s nearly six meters (18.5 feet) long, or about as long as the extended wheelbase version of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. For reference, the Mercedes-Maybach S500/S600 is "only" 5.5 meters (18 feet).
In many ways, including size, the Vision 6 is a spiritual successor to the Maybach Exelero one-off that the German brand built for Fulda tires back in 2004. As you’d expect from a Mercedes-badged concept car, the Vision 6 features a massive amount of new technology to go with the wild design, as well as a fuel-efficient drivetrain built around at least one electric motor. Don’t get your hopes up for a production version, but a two-door Maybach based on the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe isn’t out of the question.

The Mercedes-Benz C111 saga began in 1969, when the Germans unveiled the first prototype at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show. Developed as what Mercedes described as a "super sports car," the C111 was unveiled to the world with gullwing doors that harkened back to the iconic 300 SL Gullwing Coupe (discontinued in 1963) and a Wankel rotary engine under the hood. Though it was only a research vehicle, the C111 quickly became the dream car of the 1970s.
Created when the company began experimenting with new engine technologies, including rotary, diesels, and turbochargers, the C111 was used as a test bed for many other features, including a multi-link rear suspension, and a new interior design with luxury appointments and air conditioning. It featured a mid-ship layout and received many powertrains, including two- to four-rotor Wankels, turbodiesels, and even mass-produced V-8s.
Although Mercedes built three generations of experimental C111s, the C111-II is arguably the most recognizable, particularly due to its revised aerodynamics and improved ergonomics, which pretty much made it ready for the assembly line. Unfortunately, the C111 projects never made it into production, leaving enthusiasts that were dreaming about a spiritual successor to the 300 SL disappointed. But, despite the fact that not one C111 was sold to the public, the C111-II went on to gain a cult following and became a full-fledged classic.

The Tokyo Auto Show is about to kick off, and manufacturers aren’t wasting time previewing their latest futuristic design concepts. Mercedes-Benz is bringing something truly unique to the table this year with its Vision Tokyo Concept. Like other concepts such as the Nissan IDS Concept and Nissan Leaf Autonomous Concept, the Mercedes Vision Tokyo Concept is moved by electric motors and is capable of fully autonomous driving.
According to Gorden Wagener, the Head of Design at Daimler AG, “The purity and sensuality of the Vision Tokyo’s styling defines a new interpretation of modern luxury from Mercedes-Benz.” Its design is slated to increase the appeal of the Mercedes brand the younger generations, and give a view into where Mercedes plans to go in the future with self-driving cars. Aside from its unique design and excessive lighting, the Vision Tokyo is also equipped with an advanced artificial intelligence system that is capable of learning and evolving as it learns about passenger preferences, where they go and what they like.
The Vision Tokyo is set to make its first public appearance on October 30th at none other than the Tokyo Motor Show. Until then, let’s take a look at what we already know about it and see just what we can expect when it debuts.

When it comes to concept cars, Mercedes-Benz is arguably one of the most active carmakers in the industry, rolling out stunning show cars on a regular basis. Recent creations include the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Vision Grand Turismo concept and the self-driving 2015 Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury In Motion, but none were as dramatic as the Concept IAA, which made its public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Short for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile (and not Frankfurt’s official IAA, or Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, name), the Concept IAA is Mercedes’ latest effort toward perfecting aerodynamics and improving fuel economy by resolving "the conflicting aims of functionality and aesthetics."
"The Concept IAA continues our series of visionary concept cars," explained Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. "The symbiosis of alluring forms showcasing intelligent aerodynamics is an expression of our unique Mercedes-Benz design philosophy."
And visionary is right, as the IAA is a self-transforming vehicle that literally changes the shape of its body in order to achieve a very low drag coefficient. Keep reading for the full details.
