Hold Onto Your Jaws: A Sauber Mercedes C9 Has Hit The Market

This Group C monster comes from a time when doing 210 mph on the Mulsanne Straight was commonplace

Throughout the years, the world of racing has given us plenty of iconic liveries to fawn over, from the gold-and-black beauty of the JPS Lotuses run by Colin Chapman’s team to the iconic light blue threads of the stock cars raced by Richard Petty in NASCAR. An equally famous single-color comes from Germany and it adorned not one but multiple teams, namely the ’Silver Arrow’ livery. The Sauber-Mercedes C9 stands as the first ’Silver Arrow’ of the modern era, a car so dominant at one point that it drew justifiable parallels with the original silver bullets from the ’30s.

Those silver cars, be it the rear-mid-engined Auto Unions or the prodigious Mercedes-Benz machines of Rudi Uhlenhaut, were the pride of Germany in between the two World Wars and were painted silver as that was the country’s national racing color, the same as green was the national racing color of Britain and red was that of Italy. With the advent of sponsorship in the ’60s, national colors took a step back but, when Mercedes returned to top-level racing in the late ’80s, it sought to bring back some of that old-timey appeal. This is one of the cars that carried those famous colors in 1989.

The Mercedes SLC came about as a replacement for the SLK – a model that experiences sales beyond the 600,000 mark over it’s near 20 years of life. The SLC came to take its place sporting a lot of the same C-Class DNA of its predecessor along with a four-cylinder engine that was good for 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It might not sound like a lot on paper, but the little roadster could hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, a commanding figure for a vehicle of its size. Of course, Mercedes also added an AMG SLC43 to the lineup as well, which brought a 3.0-liter V-6 into the mix. It delivered 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. It could hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. But, I digress. We’re here because we’ve selected the SLC as our wallpaper of the day and we want you to give it some desktop love too. Performance wagon fans from the U.S. have missed yet another enticing, fun new model, in the form of the new (second generation) Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake. More specifically, one of the AMG-tuned performance versions, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35. The sleek new CLA load lugger is quite a pretty car, with a striking interior, and this AMG version also adds proper poke and cornering ability into the mix.

Power comes from a 302 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder that sends its power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Naturally, since it is an AMG mode, it features styling tweaks and upgrades to set it apart from CLA Shooting Brake examples and the same goes for the interior. It’s a car that packs a proper punch, but it’s also practical, very stylish and very modern-feeling inside too. None of the modifications are over the top, though, because, as you might know, this is the lesser of the two AMG versions of the CLA wagon and the design needs to reflect this.

For most people, the more powerful Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Shooting Brake will be too much, not necessarily in terms of looks, because that model doesn’t look significantly more extreme than the CLA 35, but in terms of mixing sporty looks and performance. The CLA 35 will undeniably be more popular primarily because it looks pretty much the same as the CLA 45 and most buyers won’t feel the need for the extra 100 horsepower that the more powerful version offers and the inherent extra performance.

The AMG GT represents everything that’s right about a Grand Touring car. It has a luscious body with that classic long hood that houses a high-performance engine, namely the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, the widened hips, the low roofline coupled with a generous windshield and the rounded, cheeky-looking, tail end. It’s good for a day at the Nurburgring-Nordschleife in the same way it could cope with miles upon miles behind trucks on the Autobahn or stranded at a stop light in downtown Berlin. Believe it or not, it’s been four years since Mercedes-Benz unveiled the AMG GT. Now, the front-engined two-door sports car that replaced the gull-winged SLS received another restyle and was brought to the L.A. Auto Show. In the news are the AMG Dynamics integrated driving control systems, the exterior changes meant to bring the 2-door models closer in appearance to the AMG GT 4-door Coupe and a revitalized interior.

For 2020, Mercedes-Benz will offer the familiar AMG GT and GT S Coupe models, the AMG GT Convertible, the AMG GT R and, finally, the new AMG GT R PRO, a track-focused beast that’s among the five fastest road-legal cars to ever lap the Nurburgring-Nordschleife.

The Mercedes-AMG GT R is the range-topping version of the AMG GT, a coupe introduced in 2014. The GT R arrived in 2017 with a more aggressive design, a beefed-up engine, and increased performance. It’s the most powerful and expensive version of the coupe yet. At the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, Mercedes introduced a track-ready upgrade, called the AMG GT R Pro. Fitted with body parts and drivetrain components inspired by motorsport, the Pro bridges the gap between the road-legal AMG GT R and the race-spec GT3 and GT4 iterations of the sports car. It’s not more powerful than the GT R, but it features upgraded chassis and suspension components, it’s lighter, and a bit more aerodynamic. It’s a worthy rival for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS!
