Kim Jong Un Is Rolling Around In Armored Mercedes-Benz Limos but They’re Not From Mercedes

Daimler issued a statement saying that it did not sell the North Korean regime any car and doesn’t know how its cars got them

Mercedes-Benz’s Guard series of armored vehicles has been the choice of many heads of state and other high-ranking state officials from around the world for many years. Currently, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier uses an S600 Guard as does India’s president, Ram Nath Kovind, but what’s surprising is that North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, as well as other members from his staff, also use S600 limos. Before anybody started pointing fingers at Mercedes-Benz, the German automaker announced it didn’t sell the cars to the regime in Pyongyang and, furthermore, doesn’t even know how the cars got there to begin with.

Remember those awkward scenes shot during the historic U.S.-North Korea summit held in Singapore in 2018? I’m talking about the images of a fleet of Kim’s bodyguards running next to his armored Mercedes-Benz as the dictator was leaving the place of the meeting. They perplexed many, but the purpose of the whole shebang was to showcase the status of Kim as well as his elite troops that protect him known as the Guard Command. But, what Mercedes-Benz found perplexing was something else: the fact that Kim used during that visit and that he also uses back home Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard models. His father, Kim Jong Il, was also seen at times aboard armored S Class models from the W140 generation but those were acquired in a different, more transparent manner as Mercedes-Benz was open to shaking hands with North Korea back then.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach Pullman

2016 Mercedes-Maybach Pullman

With a tradition that harks back to the 1930s, when special variants of the "Grosser Mercedes" were used by heads of state around the world, the longest and most luxurious version of the largest Mercedes-Benz model in its lineup has always been a special car. Since the second "Grosser Mercedes," aka the "600" or the "Dictator-mobile," entered production in 1964, every generation of the S-Class has also had at least one longer version sporting the "Pullman" moniker. With a wheelbase so long that it can accomodate 2+2 seats facing each other behind the two front passengers, not to mention the option of body armor, Pullman Mercedes’ have always been regarded as the cars of choice for heads of state, dignitaries and similar VIPs.

With the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class already filling a more luxurious niche above the "plebeian" 2015 S600, the German carmaker has unveiled an even longer and more luxurious version, bringing back the Pullman name. Since several pre-production prototypes of the new model have already been spied at or around Brabus’ headquarters in Bottrop, it seems that the ultra-long Mercedes-Maybach Pullman was developed and will probably be manufactured by the famed tuner.

Updated 03/03/2015: Mercedes unveiled the new Maybach S600 Pullman Limousine at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard

2015 Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard

Mercedes-Benz has a long and storied history as an armored vehicle manufacturer. Be it Adolf Hitler’s bulletproof 770K limousine or the early, army-spec G-Class SUVs, the Germans have provided the world with some of the best ironclad rigs. More recently, Stuttgart has been developing and selling armor-plated automobiles through its Guard program, which already includes a generous range of sedans and SUVs, such as the E-Class and the M-Class. Going into the 2015 model year, the Stuttgart crew expanded its flagship S-Class lineup by adding the S600 model to the Guard program. The result is astonishing, as the segments most luxurious and comfortable limousine has also become the safest vehicle in the world.

Surrounded by a two-inch-thick steel plate and bulletproof glass, the S600 Guard is certified for ballistic protection class VR9. That’s the highest ballistic protection class as of 2014 and makes the S-Class safe against anything from small fire arms to grenades. In fact, the S600 Guard is the first vehicle in the world to be fully certified as having VR9 levels of protection, a feat that’s likely to send it in the fleets of many heads of state.

Comedian Tracy Morgan Critically Injured in a Crash

Comedian Tracy Morgan Critically Injured in a Crash

Former SNL cast member, 30 Rock star and one of my personal favorite comedians is in critical condition following a serious accident this past weekend. Tracy Morgan was riding in a Mercedes Sprinter converted into a limo as it traveled down the New Jersey Turnpike in Mercer County, NJ when it was struck by a Walmart semi truck.

According to the report, Morgan’s Mercedes was stuck in slow-moving traffic when the semi didn’t see the slower traffic and failed to avoid the limo. The semi struck the rear of the limo, spinning it around and flipping it on its side, critically injuring Morgan, harming three other passengers and killing Morgan’s long-time friend James "Jimmy Mack" McNair.

Morgan is currently in critical condition in the hospital, but is showing signs of improvement as of Monday afternoon. The complete rundown on Tracy’s condition is unknown at this point, but there are plenty of rumors running around.

The driver of the Walmart truck, Kevin Roper, was charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. Reports claim that he had been awake for 24 straight hours when the crash occurred.

We’ll stay on top of this news and update you as more information comes out.

Spy Shots: Mercedes S-Class Pullman Looks Nearly Complete

Spy Shots: Mercedes S-Class Pullman Looks Nearly Complete

Back in 2011, Daimler announced that it would cease Maybach production due to the very poor sales, and the last Maybach left the factory in December 2012. Shortly after Benz dropped Maybach, Mercedes announced it would replace the entire brand with an extended-wheelbase version of the new-generation S-Class called the Pullman.

Today our spy photographers caught an awfully long S-Class out testing. Though many people think this may be just an extra-long version of the new S-Class, our detective work has all but confirmed that this is the same Pullman prototype that we caught earlier, simply further along in the design process.

The super-long body sits atop an extended S-Class wheelbase and it features a new side profile and a new C-Pillar. The Pullman will offer significantly more room on the inside, plus there are rumors floating around that the Pullman will offer a 2+2+2 configuration.

Under the hood, we expect the next S600 Pullman to get a twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that will deliver about 600 horsepower.

Expect to see the new Pullman sometime at the end of 2013.

Fleet of gold Mercedes vehicles headed to 2012 Cannes Film Festival

Fleet of gold Mercedes vehicles headed to 2012 Cannes Film Festival

Now that Maybach is out of the picture, Daimler’s presence in one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals - the 2012 Cannes Film Festival - now hinges on Mercedes-Benz.

The German automaker is responding in golden fashion by bringing in a fleet of its vehicles covered in...gold. If the glitz of all these golden Mercs serving us certifiable shuttle vehicles, Mercedes is also dressing up one car, a 2013 Mercedes SL65 AMG, in gold where it was displayed in all its shining and shimmering glory at the Cinema Against AIDS Gala being organized by the amfAR foundation at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on May 24.

In addition to having their gold-covered fleet vehicles, Mercedes will also be hosting a plethora of events during the event, one of which is a test drive session of all its latest models. This session will be open to the public and will take place along the French Riviera. And lastly, Merc’s performance division, AMG, will be sponsoring a handful of events, particularly the "Le Club by Albane" at the J.W. Marriott hotel and the “IWC Filmmakers Dinner” at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on May 21st.

So if any celebrity is looking for a ride to Cannes, it probably won’t be too difficult to spot any one of these golden Mercedes vehicles. Then again, you can skip all that and pull off a Kanye West and just drive to the event in a Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss.

Mercedes-Benz Viano VISION DIAMOND

Mercedes-Benz Viano VISION DIAMOND

Remember the days when vans were cool? You know, you would cruise down the strip in your mom’s minivan and pick up all of your friends to head out to the coolest hangout spots… Oh wait, vans were never cool, what were we thinking? Well, that is until Mercedes decided to get into the van-making business.

At the 2012 Beijing Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz rolled into the show with its all-new customized Viano VISION DIAMOND. This ultra-luxury van, which is not yet available in the U.S., puts most modern-day limos to shame with its features. Add in the fact that it is large enough to move around in comfortably, unlike limos, which typically have standard headroom, and you have essentially a luxury home on the go.

Mercedes did not release too much information on this machine, but there is enough information obtainable just by looking at it to determine that this thing is flat out awesome. The Viano VISION DIAMOND would certainly eliminate any kids embarrassment of riding to school in a minivan, if this just so happened to be said minivan.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class L by Prior Design

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class L by Prior Design

The Mercedes E-Class L certainly doesn’t lack in luxury. But when you look at it, you have to admit that it still needs a little sprucing up to really deliver home the point that it’s a luxury limousine that shouldn’t be messed with.

The boys at Prior Design pretty much think the same way, so they did something that we couldn’t do from the comforts of our couch: they actually developed an aerodynamic kit to give the E-Class L a little more attitude.

Among the modifications Prior Design gave to the E-Class L include a new front bumper, a pair of new side skirts, a new rear bumper, a new set of 20" alloy wheels, and a new suspension set-up that improves the luxury saloon’s handling and characteristics.

Meanwhile, performance numbers were left untouched, which is a little disappointing. Then again, the E-Class L still has a plethora of power train options you can choose from, highlighted by a 4.7-liter V8 engine that produces just a shade under 400 horsepower.

2011 Mercedes E-Class Xtend by Binz

2011 Mercedes E-Class Xtend by Binz

Long wheelbase vehicles are meant to give extra room for people who can’t seem to get enough of it on their cars. So you would think that having that additional space would be enough for these guys, right?

Well, guess again.

To accommodate those people that want their vehicles to redefine the word ‘spacious’, tuning ‘extentionaires’ Binz has released their latest line of Mercedes E-Class XTEND vehicles meant to give the space needy their due medicine. Measuring a ridiculous 19 feet in length with a wheelbase of over 12 feet, and weighing an eye-popping 4,629 lbs, Binz’s new XTEND line-up will give you all the space you need to have your own party inside the car. The tuning firm’s list of E-Class Estate vehicles eligible to be “extended” – no pun intended – include the E250 CDI, E350 CGI and E500. These three models have their own engine specifications - you’ll see them in one of the photos – so the price tag for all that extending begins at €121,950, or about $163,400 based on current exchange rates, going all the way to possibly around €160,000, or $214,000.

Guess there’s a pretty big price to pay to have all that space in your car, huh?

If for nothing else, at least you can get to roll around town in a car that writes wealth and luxury all by itself.

Bonhams puts Elvis Presley's 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 up for auction

Bonhams puts Elvis Presley’s 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 up for auction

Say what you want about Elvis Presley, but the King of Rock and Roll sure knows how to roll around in grand style.

Years after his untimely death, Bonhams has decided to put one of Elvis’ vintage classics up for auction at the year-end sale of Important Motor Car and Fine Automobilia. This particular one, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB limousine, is especially important because it’s one of only a few cars that were registered in Elvis Presley’s name.

The collector’s Benz, which comes with a powder blue finish and a cream leather interior, will be the highlight piece of the auction that’s scheduled for December 6 in Surrey, UK. How it ended up there on the other side of the Atlantic is anyone’s guess. But what’s important is that this car is a true one-of-a-kind that was once ridden by one of the most iconic figures in the 20th century.

So, if you’re a big fan of the King of Rock and Roll – not to mention that you have tons of money to spare – you can make a serious bid for this 1970 Merc 600 SWB limousine. In the event that you really are planning to bid on this car, you might want to bring with you around $300,000, which is the expected price tag the car is expected to fetch.

UPDATED 12/14/10: We’ve just gotten word that The King’s 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 was officially scooped up by a German buyer at Mercedes-Benz World near Weybridge, Surrey, U.K. for a price of $187,390 including the buyer’s premium. It’s way short than what the expected price tag was but still, $187,390 for a car that was once ridden by Elvis Presley himself? Not a bad deal if you ask us.

Maybach May See the End of the Line

Maybach May See the End of the Line

Cosmetic surgery is quite popular nowadays. In fact, even Mercedes’ luxury brand, Maybach, will be seeing a little bit of a facelift before its ultimate descent into the automobile graveyard. As the next generation of the Mercedes S class gets taken to the next level, Maybach will turn into a thing of the past, but not before getting some new grilles and LED lights on its current three models. After the Maybach’s debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, sources say that Mercedes will let the brand slip away into darkness and bring to light the new, higher tech S class.

The new S class is said to debut in 2014 and are rumored to contain many of the features found in the F800. The technologies include:

Traffic Jam Assist: A cruise control system that accelerates and decelerates by itself and can even follow turns up to 25MPH.

Range on Map System: Shows about how far the car can travel as a 360-degree graphic.

HMI Control System: This unique technology will record the hand gestures of the driver so it can then interpret the applications the driver wants to operate.

Multi-Drive Platform: Can be fitted with either a hydrogen fuel cell or plug-in hybrid system.

2009 Mercedes S 600 Pullman Guard

Mercedes unveiled today the S 600 Pullman Guard, a limousine integrated Highest Protection. The car was unveiled to celebrate 80 years of manufacturing vehicles with factory-integrated special protection.

The technical basis for the new Pullman limousine is provided by the S 600 Guard, the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a superbly smooth twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque. As these figures suggest, the S 600 Guard Pullman can call on effortlessly superior power delivery, allowing it to get out of a danger zone rapidly, should the need arise.

The S 600 Pullman Guard offers most of the technical innovations which make the Mercedes-Benz S-Class the number-one trailblazer in passenger car development and the world’s best-selling luxury saloon. These include important developments such as the new COMAND APS system.

Mercedes-Benz’ night view assist system reduces the risk of accidents during the hours of darkness. This system is based on infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye and will therefore not dazzle oncoming traffic. Two infrared head-lamps illuminate the road, significantly extending the driver’s range of vision when on low beam. An infrared camera mounted on the inside of the windscreen picks up the reflected image of the road ahead and displays this in the instrument cluster.
