2019 Mercedes EQC 1886 Edition

A fitting special edition for a crossover that could turn into one of Mercedes’ key electric models

Mercedes-Benz attended the 2019 New York International Auto Show with a special edition electric SUV that pays tribute to its past and looks ahead to its future, all at the same time. It’s called the Mercedes-Benz EQC 1886 Edition, and as you might imagine, the “1886” in its name is a direct nod to the year Karl Benz applied for a patent for a “vehicle powered by a gas engine.” The EQC 1886 Edition is, in many ways, unique in its celebration of the German automaker’s history and its plans for a new electric-powered era of models. Like most special edition models, the EQC 1886 Edition benefits from a bevy of aesthetic upgrades in its exterior and interior. There’s no mention of any power and performance upgrades, though it’s hard to expect one from a vehicle whose identity is less about actual performance and more about showcasing Mercedes’ electrified future. Mercedes has yet to reveal a price tag for the special edition EQC, but it will be available sometime in 2020.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS represents the third generation of the company’s already iconic SUV. Introduced at the 2019 New York Auto Show, it offers more space, more comfort, and more luxury while retaining a familiar face. The GLS arrives to take on the BMW X7, the company’s first foray in the full-size SUV market, the Lincoln Navigator, and the Cadillac Escalade.

The GLS adopts Mercedes’ latest styling language, seen most recently on the smaller GLE crossover. The exterior has smoother surfaces and sportier fascias, while the interior borrows from the S-Class sedan but features a few unique cues as well. Under the hood, the GLS retains its two-engine lineup with V-6 and V-8 offerings for the U.S. market, but both units are paired to 48-volt mild hybrid systems.

The biggest SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup is back and it’s now bigger than ever. The wheelbase is longer so all three rows get more room, thus making a six-seater version possible, and if it’s cargo space you’re after, the 2020 GLS delivers up to 95.3 cubic-feet of storage area. Another first is the introduction of the GLS 580 4Matic that features an electrified and twin-turbocharged V-8 with 489 horsepower on tap and the EQ Boost starter-generator.

European manufacturers are again trying to beat Americans at their own game. This time, the name of the game isn’t pick-up trucks, but full-size SUVs. When you think of such elevated land yachts, you’re probably picturing a Cadillac Escalade or a Lincoln Navigator in your head but BMW and, now, Mercedes-Benz are vying to change that image in your head. If BMW is trying to tempt you with the vehicle with the single largest twin kidney grilles in the history of mankind, Mercedes is a little bit more subtle with the 2020 GLS, a car built in Alabama that packs all the luxury features that America likes and then some. Also, it looks less like a bus in comparison to the Navigator.

How does a 7:49 ‘Ring time grab ‘ya?

A Nürburgring lap time under the 8-minute mark is an impressive accomplishment, but posting that time in a top-heavy SUV is simply insane. However, that’s exactly what Mercedes-AMG just did with the 2020 GLC 63, claiming the title of fastest SUV in the world at The Green Hell.

Making it possible is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, which is tuned to produce 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque in the top-trim GLC 63 S. Sixty mph arrives in an astonishing 3.6 seconds, just a few ticks off the 800-horsepower Hellcat Redeye. Top speed is rated at 174 mph.

Go for the base GLC 63, and you’ll get 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which translates into a 3.8-second run to 60 mph and a top speed of 155 mph.

Managing the heft is an AMG Ride Control+ air suspension system with adaptive dampers, while AMG’s Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system makes it grip. Output is routed through an AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission.

Outside, the GLC 63 twins get new styling with revised taillight and headlight housings, both of which come with LEDs, while a pair of trapezoidal tailpipes are found out back. Wheel sizing ranges up to 21 inches in diameter.

The cabin is covered in Nappa leather with yellow contrast stitching, and the infotainment system comes with the latest MBUX features, including the optional MBUX Interior Assistant.

Look for the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 at the 2019 New York International Auto Show this week, and in dealers later this year.

A rounder roof mated with familiar turbo AWD power

Mercedes-AMG just dropped details on the 2020 CLA 35, padding the latest CLA four-door coupe lineup with a fresh go-faster variant. The powertrain spec pulls from the latest A 35 sedan, and includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Rounding up all those ponies is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and variable all-wheel drive system, which put ‘em to the ground for a 4.6-second 0-to-60 mph time.

Keeping it all in check is an AMG Ride Control suspension setup, with MacPherson struts in front and a four-link for the rear. Adaptive dampeners are optional. Speed-sensitive steering helps it turn, while four-pot calipers and 13.8-inch discs in front throw the anchor. What’s more, if you intend on spending some time clipping apexes, the AMG Track pace data log feature is an available option.

Outside, the CLA 35 looks quite sleek, and comes with AMG-specific styling upgrades like new bumpers, a new rear diffuser, a trunk-lid spoiler, silver chrome trim bits, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Larger 19-inch alloys are an available option.

Inside is the latest MBUX infotainment and 64-color ambient lighting. Black upholstery with red contrast stitching keeps it comfy, while a set of Widescreen Cockpit digital displays and advanced voice control take your inputs.

Pricing is so far unannounced, but look for full details when the 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 drops at the New York Auto Show next week. Availability opens up later this year.

2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe And Cab Unveiled

Fresh tech and some extra ponies

Mercedes-Benz just unveiled its latest AMG C43 Coupeand Cabmodels ahead of their official debut in the Big Apple.

The exterior gains a new twin-louver AMG grille and tweaked fascia styling, as well as updates to the bumper and chrome tailpipes. There are also new AMG wheels in the corners, which were optimized to better cut through the atmosphere at speed.

Moving to the cabin, there’s an optional 12.3-inch fully digital cockpit display and an AMG steering wheel to help drivers get a grip, with Dynamica microfiber and aluminum making the materials list. The optional AMG Performance seats will help hold passengers in place, while the Cab model gets an AirScarf neck heater as standard.

Further customization options include the choice between ash, walnut, and oak trim, as well as that good ‘ole go-to composite, carbon fiber.

An AMG-tuned turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 powerplant resides under the hood, with output rated at 385 horsepower. That’s 23 horses more than before, by the way. Torque goes unchanged at 384 pound-feet between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. Properly applied, the run to 60 mph takes around 4.5 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 130 mph.

A nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic AWD system with rear torque-bias rounds out the drivetrain. Adaptive dampers arrive as standard spec, as does AMG speed-sensitive steering.

The fresh C now heads to the 2018 New York International Auto Show to strut its stuff in the metal. Sales will kick off later this year.

Already a big hit, Mercedes’ flagship received a makeover

Launched in 2013, the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class has brought many innovations to the market. It also arrived in dealerships as a sportier, yet more comfortable proposition to the previous-gen S-Class, being praised for its fantastic ride, effortless acceleration, and the enormous amount of luxury and tech. In 2013, it had no rival, but BMW launched a new 7 Series in 2016, while Cadillac joined the full-size segment with the CT6. As a result, Mercedes-Benz updated the S-Class for the 2018 model year.

Although it’s safe to say that the outgoing S-Class was still competitive against its newer rivals, an update was necessary, especially in the tech department. That’s not to say that the S-Class was outdated, it’s just that Merc launched a range of new features with the latest E-Class, including semi-autonomous driving, that had to be offered in the top-of-the-line sedan too. Alongside the new tech, Mercedes also introduced a couple of new engines for the U.S. market and a new diesel for Europe. The facelift is rounded off by mild design upgrades and a revised model lineup.

Sailing the blacktop seas never felt so right

Merc began production of the full-size S-Class sedan in the early ‘70s, following the official adoption of the “S-Class” nomenclature. Previously dubbed the “Sonderklasse,” or “special class,” this ultra-sleek opulence machine is currently at the halfway-point of its sixth generation. Framed as Mercedes’ flagship four-door and boasting the best that Merc can muster when it comes to style and equipment, a pair of high-horsepower variants from AMG occupies the top of the S-Class pyramid, including the S 63 and even-faster S 65. Both iterations just got a mid-cycle update at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, with the S 63 gaining a raft of changes affecting everything from the engine, to the transmission, to the AWD, to the styling. By comparison, the S 65 is less new, but still hugely impressive. The party piece is under the hood, where the previous model’s turbo 6.0-liter V-12 engine remains intact, complemented by updates to the S 65’s exterior styling and kit. Meanwhile, the rest of the spec sheet goes unchanged, including the seven-speed automatic transmission, Magic Body Control Suspension, track-oriented AMG options, and tech-heavy safety features.

“The S 65 with its high-torque 6.0-liter V-12 Biturbo engine remains the spearhead of the S-Class models,” proclaims Chairman of the Managing Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Tobias Moers. All told, the AMG S 65 is an exercise in excess, with crazy-fast speed potential and land-based luxury yacht style. prepped S63 and S65 versions, and both have been updated for the 2018 model year.

The revised AMG S63 broke cover at the 2018 Shanghai Auto Show alongside the standard, yet still luxurious and fast model. Visual upgrades are of the facelift variety and won’t blow anyone away, but the interior received far more attention. New features include upgrades to upholstery and options, but also a healthy update in the tech department with all the state-of-the-art gadgets that debuted on the smaller E-Class in 2016. There’s even bigger news under the hood. While the bonkers AMG S65 continues with the massive V-12, the S63 ditches the 5.5-liter V-8 in favor of AMG’s much newer twin-turbo, 4.0-liter unit. As expected, the new engine comes with a power increase, which translates into better performance.

Big, bad, and plenty of force-fed motivation under the hood

Mercedes-AMG just dropped cover on the newGLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe about a week before both vehicles were scheduled to appear in the metal at the New York International Auto Show. The mid-size SUV can be had in two separate flavors, including the 476-horsepower base model, or the 510-horsepower S model, both of which employ a double dose of turbo’d induction to make the go. Torque is rated at 479 pound-feet and 516 pound-feet, respectively.

Keeping it tight in the bends is a three-chamber air suspension system with adaptive components, including a four-link set-up in front and a multi-link set-up in the rear. Turns come courtesy of speed-sensitive steering.

Outside, you’ll find standard 19-inch wheels in a titanium grey finish, plus a new fascia with a grille AMG has dubbed Panamericana as a nod to the brand’s sports cars.

Inside, the pumped-up GLC’s get sport seating and leatherette upholstery, plus AMG-specific touches like badges and a performance gauge cluster.

Handling the cog swaps is an AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission, which feeds a rear-biased 4Matic+ high-performance AWD system. Big upgraded brakes are in place to make it stop.

Drivers will enjoy multiple drive modes, which affect numerous vehicle characteristics, including the sound it makes thanks to an active flap in the exhaust. Turn it up to enhance the aural enjoyment, or turn it down for a more appropriate note for whatever the situation may be.

Look for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe to premier next week in the Big Apple. Sales are scheduled for June, with a market launch in September.

2016 New York International Auto Show – Best In Show

A variety of flavors to satisfy your speed lust

I’ll just come out and say it – being the follow-up act to the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show is not an enviable position (check out some of our coverage here to see what I’m talking about). Nevertheless, the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) pulled it off, providing us with plenty of fresh metal worthy of our collective attention and desire. From muscle-bound track monsters, to European refinement, to Japanese tech, there really was a little bit of everything in the Big Apple this year. But the question is this – which models stood out as the best of the bunch?

The criteria for clinching a spot on this list is loose, but I’ll try to distill it down for you. A Best In Show winner has to stir emotion. It has to excel, both as a piece of design and a technical showcase. Significance in a historical context is a big plus. And of course, there’s the speed – big power, crazy specs, prowess in the twisties… you know, the good stuff.

The following five cars have all that and more, and if you love fast machinery, odds are you’ll find something to love in this list.

AMG’s range-topper for the new C-Class convertible

Mercedes is debuting a ton of AMG products in New York this year, including the GLC43, E43, and CLA45. The latest addition to the roster is the new C63 Cabriolet, which follows hot on the heels of the C-Class Cabriolet and C43 Cabriolet that dropped in Geneva earlier this month. The C63 Cab adds the usual high-performance AMG’d bits and pieces, like an aggressive exterior package and an upgraded interior. The biggest news, however, is what’s making the go, as this range-topper replaces the C43’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with a twin-turbo V-8.

Buyers can choose between two levels of C63 Cab – the standard version, or the even-crazier C63 S. Both are fire-breathing tire-shredders with a zeal for velocity, very much in line with the established AMG go-faster philosophy. But does the open-top design dilute the formula?

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe

The new Mercedes GLC Coupe made its debut at the New York Auto Show

Back at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, we saw the Mercedes GLC Coupe concept, which was designed as a preview of a future production model. Well, here we are a year later at the New York Auto Show, and we now have the production version of the GLC Coupe – essentially a coupe body with SUV suspension. The remarkable thing about the production model is that, aside from a few nips and tucks, it’s quite similar to the concept.

Gordon Wagner, the Head of Design for Daimler AG, said, “The GLC Coupe reflects our iconic Mercedes-Benz coupe design while symbolizing the diversity of our brand – it is both ’hot and cool’.” He continued, “With its design idiom of sensual purity, it perfectly embodies our styling philosophy while at the same time representing contemporary luxury.”

When the concept debuted last year, there were mixed opinions about it. Some said it was ugly, unpractical, and pointless, while others said it was beautiful and would be a welcomed addition to the Mercedes lineup. We’ll find out how well it’s publically accepted soon enough, but until then, let’s take a look at the GLC Coupe in production form and what it offers.

Mercedes-AMG announces the GLC43 – the first V-6-powered GLC

With the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 starting out at $99,950, and the Mercedes-AMG GLA45 starting out at $49,580, Mercedes has had a huge gap in its AMG lineup. It’s asking a bit much to expect your customers to pay an extra $50,000 if they want an AMG-branded SUV that is larger than the GLA. Well, with the first quarter of 2016 coming to an end, Mercedes has decided to expand its lineup even further. And just today, it announced the Mercedes-AMG GLC43. Finally, a model to bridge that $50,000 gap.

Tobias Moers, the CEO of Mercedes-AMG, said, “With the new AMG GLC43 we are offering an AMG model in the mid-size SUV segment for the first time. The new SUV from Affalterbach marks the pinnacle of the GLC product range and in the AMG portfolio, it closes the gap between the GLA and GLE.”

As exciting as that news sounds, there is more to it than meets the eye. See here in the U.S., the GLC SUV has only been available with a 2.0-liter that produced a fair but unimpressive 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. With the addition of the GLC43, the GLC lineup finally receives a V-6 for the first time as well. Now that is certainly worth talking about, right? We think so, and that is what we’re here to do.

The new GLC43 will make its world debut later this month at the New York International Auto Show, with sales set to begin by the end of the year. So, until we can see it in the metal over in New York, let’s take a look at the official pre-release photos and information provided by Mercedes-AMG.
