The 2020 Mitsubishi Super Height K-Wagon is a concept car that the Japanese firm unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The show car previews Mitsubishi’s next generation of Kei wagons, most likely a replacement for the eK model sold on the Japanese market. The 2020 Super Height K-Wagon is a typical Kei wagon, featuring a boxy, tall body and bold styling features typical to these Japan-specific vehicles.
2020 Mitsubishi Mi-Tech Concept
One could argue that Mitsubishi is King of ridiculous concepts with at least one showing up to every auto show, and the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show is no different as Mitsubishi has introduced the Mi-Tech Concept. This concept is a futuristic take on the Dune Buggy (will we even have these in the future?) with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that’s paired with, I kid you not, a gas turbine engine. Now we know what those weird fans that we saw in the teasers are for. It also represents a new take on Mitsubishi’s grille design and, while it does look ridiculous in some respects, it’s not all fantasy and dreams. It was just a couple of weeks ago that Mitsubishi published that weird teaser of a new EV SUV concept for the 2019 Tokyo Motor show. You know, the teaser with four weird fans (we assume) on the rear? Now, Mitsubishi has released another teaser that was pretty dark, but we managed to light it up with a little bit of photoshop work. What we’ve found, however, leaves us wondering just what point Mitsubishi is trying to make here – this thing is clearly not set for production, and we’re not sure if it serves a real purpose at all outside of just being weird. Here’s a closer look at the brightened photo….
What In the Name of Weird and Pointless Concepts Is Mitsubishi Planning for the Tokyo Motor Show?
Mitsubishi is no stranger to swinging for the fences with its concept vehicles. Perhaps it comes with being a middling automaker that’s looking to attract as much attention as it possibly can. Or maybe Mitsubishi’s designers decided to lock themselves in a hotbox as they giggled their way into creating the company’s latest concept vehicle.
Either way, the automaker’s newest concept offering — it predictably doesn’t have a name yet — is one or the other, maybe even a combination of both. It’s a concept PHEV SUV, which is all Mitsubishi’s telling us. It also attached a teaser image of the concept, specifically showing four circular objects whose primary — and secondary, I suppose — purpose still escapes us.
That’s all that Mitsubishi is willing to divulge so we should be in for a few surprises when the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show opens its doors next month. Let’s just hope that those four circular things have a collective purpose beyond looking like the mouth of a mutated Venus Fly Trap.
2019 Mitsubishi Triton Absolute Concept
Introduced at the Bangkok Motor Show, the Mitsubishi Triton Absolute Concept truck is a proposed rugged and performance-orientated off-roader equipped with beefed-up fenders, 2-inches of extra ground clearance, and many off-road worthy additions. Although only a concept, the Triton Absolute gives us a glimpse into what may well become the competitor to the trucks like the Ford Ranger Raptor or the Toyota Hilux Rugged X. While the fate of its production rests in the hands of the interested public, the Triton (L200) Absolute may present the starting point for development of the sporty, hardened version of the next generation Triton. The name Absolute evokes clear notes of enthusiasm and playfulness that characterizes all modern off-road-centric trucks. Unfortunately, even if it reaches production, the Mitsubishi Triton Absolute will not be available in the U.S.
Mitsubishi Introduces Us To A Funny-Named Yet Smart Crossover At The 2019 Geneva Motor Show
For some weird reason, Mitsubishi decided to name its latest plug-in crossover after a ski resort in Switzerland. Mooching off the Swiss, eh? I would have preferred naming it Roger, or Federer. Anyway, Mitsubishi unveiled the Engelberg Tourer at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It seems to have drawn a lot of inspiration from the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept that was revealed in 2016. Could it be the next Outlander?
2019 Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Concept
Mitsubishi is presenting a new SUV concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Called the Engelberg Tourer Concept, the all-electric prototype is the latest concept salvo from the Japanese automaker. It arrives almost two years after the automaker unveiled the Mitsubishi e-Evolution electric SUV at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. While it doesn’t directly point to a specific electric SUV model, the Engelberg Tourer Concept is a showcase model that highlights the advancements Mitsubishi has made in the field of electrification. As a fixture in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mitsubishi is now in a solid position to advance its electrified plans for the future. It’s unclear if the Engelberg Tourer Concept is a part of these plans, but with the model debuting in Geneva, it’s safe to say that the concept will play a role in how the company’s electrification plans take shape.
The Redesigned 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is Here to Cosplay As The Eclipse Cross
Don’t get confused by the ASX nameplate on this newly released 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport crossover. The ASX is a name stashed on the back of the European Outlander Sport, and as the new one will be released at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, it is only logical. What seems less logical is yet another facelift for the Outlander Sport. The car has been around since February 2010, and for the past nine years, it received exactly three facelifts (this being fourth). This means that the third generation of the Outlander Sport has exactly five different looks. While previous redesigns haven’t been, what one would call...ahem... exhaustive, the new redesign is. The new 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received a full visual makeover with the styling cues reminiscent of all new Mitsubishi cars. So, it looks a lot like the Eclipse Cross then.
Mitsubishi is Bringing Three Concepts to the Tokyo Auto Salon, All of Which Lack Certain Necessities
The Tokyo Auto Salon is nearing its arrival and Mitsubishi is prepared to tackle the show with not one, not two, but three concepts. The first one is based on the Delica D:5 and offers up a take on what an off-road-oriented model could look like. The other two concepts are based on the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross, and both go by the name “Street Sport.” Information is still rather thin at this point, but here’s what we know so far.
Mitsubishi has brought its e-Evolution concept to the U.S. for the first time at the 2018 Los Angeles auto show after its last showing at the 2018 Geneva motor show. It’s a study for a sporty, all-electric performance crossover with an iconic name, but one that we don’t see reaching production any time soon, at least in a form as extreme as this.

Mitsubishi to Showcase New Outlander PHEV in Geneva with Better Tech, Revised Looks
The revised 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is set to make its debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and It’s about time. The SUV has been Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle since 2015, an achievement it earned after selling more than 100,000 units in the continent in the last three years. Globally, over 140,000 units of the Outlander PHEV have been sold since the model arrived back in 2013.
2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Less than four months after the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV arrived on U.S. shores in December 2017, Mitsubishi is launching an updated version at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland this March. The updates focus on increased efficiency from this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, but visual updates and interior improvements are also made.
Mitsubishi will announce the full details on March 6, but we already have a good understanding of the changes coming for 2019. The U.S. is expected to get this new model, too, though it might not happen until 2020.

2017 Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept
The Tokyo Motor Show is nearly upon us, which means we’re preparing for a barrage of wild concepts and cool sci-fi weirdness. Mitsubishi is already getting on the action, unveiling its new e-Evolution a few weeks ahead of the big sheet pull. The design study is framed as a preview of forthcoming technology and exterior styling from the automaker, and includes a focus on all-electric propulsion mated with an AWD SUV body style. The e-Evolution also gets a few interesting driver assistance technologies, like an onboard AI that customizes various onboard systems to your preferences and will even coach you on how to be a better driver. The e-Evolution is just one of 12 vehicles Mitsubishi is bringing to the show, so we’ll have to see what else will make an appearance, but so far, the e-Evolution is one of the more ambitious concepts we’ve seen from Mitsu in a while.
Of course, we have to address the elephant in the room – the repurposed Evolution nameplate. Just last year, Mitsu killed off the Lancer Evo, the iconic rally-bred sedan that churned major terra in the WRC. Purists will undoubtedly balk at the thought of an all-electric, AI-infused SUV carrying the torch lit by that four-door monster, and rightfully so, but either way, it looks like change is inevitable here. 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
Some could view the Mitsubishi brand as a problem child, being stuck in a kerfuffle as it tries to shift its lineup to meet the overwhelming demand for crossovers and SUVs. It was initially planning to hit the 100,000 sales mark here in the U.S. for 2016, but the financial year – which ends in March of 2017 – will be the first time in eight years that the brand has posted a loss. That suspected loss, which could amount to as much as ¥205 billion (about $2 million) can be attributed to the brand getting caught in its own scandal. But, that’s not the only reason.
Over the years, it has let down fans that prefer sporty cars over SUVs, with the Eclipse being killed off after 2012 and the Lancer soldiering on virtually unchanged and underpowered for a decade, just to be killed off before the start of 2018. With its focus consistently on SUV’s, it should come as no surprise that the brand has just announced a new compact SUV that will slot between the Outlander and Outlander Sport. Called the Eclipse Cross, the new SUV is actually a step forward for Mitsubishi and brings about a decent amount of technology, a new drivetrain option, and unique styling inside and out.
The Eclipse Cross is to make its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and while the name isn’t original – and maybe seen as stupid by those who remember the Eclipse coupe – the SUV itself is fresh and, at a glance, looks to be more advanced than anything else that Mitsubishi has on offer at the moment. But, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s dive on in a take a good look at Mitsubishi’s latest SUV.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition
Mitsubishi is struggling to keep up with demands presented by the masses, effectively letting certain once-successful models like the Lancer go untouched for years only to be discontinued like the EVO program that once made Mitsubishi a favorite rally brand. Now, as the Lancer makes its way to the guillotine, the brand shifts its focus to crossovers and SUVs in an attempt to stay relevant in an ever-changing world. We know there’s a new crossover planned to debut in Geneva later this year (for the love of all that is holy, we really hope that don’t call that model “Eclipse”) but that leaves Mitsubishi with nothing special for its time at the Chicago Auto Show. Until now, that is, as the brand has just announced that it will debut a limited-edition variant of the Outlander Sport that is said to bring “striking style and technology enhancements at an affordable price.” In other words, it’ll get a new set of wheels and a few other minor things outside, to go with some unique interior work and smartphone integration.
"As the brand sales leader, Outlander Sport does an exemplary job of offering consumers unmatched value at an attractive price," said Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer, MMNA. "We’ve now taken that approach one step further by integrating additional standard equipment and technology into the Limited Edition at a price point that is unprecedented within the broader CUV segment."
The thing is, the current Outlander Sport (known as the RVR is some markets) has been around since 2010 and has only received a very mild facelift over the last seven years. It’s about time for Mitsubishi to push the Outlander through another generational shift, but it’s hoping this limited-edition model will maintain customer interest through the end of the year. Whether it will be successful in doing so is a completely different story, but let’s take a quick look at it to see what it offers.

2016 Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept
Unlike other Japanese manufacturers that focus on expanding their lineups, Mitsubishi took the opposite route recently, shrinking its offerings to only a handful of models. With the Lancer set to bow at the end of the year, the Mitsubishi range will include only four nameplates in the U.S., plus three more in other markets around the world. Despite that, the brand’s current focus seems to be on concept cars, with a brand-new one brought into the spotlight at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
Called the GT-PHEV, where GT stands for "ground tourer," the new concept vehicle is described as a high-end next-generation SUV that easily takes many road surface conditions in its stride." This statement sounds as if Mitsubishi is planning to move toward the premium market with a new high-riding, people hauler, but until further information becomes available, the GT-PHEV is just another concept car in a long line of experimental vehicles that the Japanese brand has unveiled in recent years.
You see, Mitsubishi has launched more concepts than production cars since 2013. It all started with the XR-PHEV, which was followed by the more production-ready XR-PHEV II, the eX, and the GC-PHEV. The XR, GC, and GT are all hybrids, while the eX showcased an all-electric drivetrain. Looking at those concepts, Mitsubishi would have a comprehensive crossover lineup should all be approved for production, but that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Meanwhile, the company has the GT-PHEV to brag about and that’s the model we will analyze below.

Are Mitsubishi’s SUV Plans Finally Within Sight?
By now, most people in the industry know the running joke about Mitsubishi as the world’s foremost authority in building SUV concepts. The Japanese automaker has actually made it a specialty of sorts, if you can believe that. Since 2013, Mitsubishi has unveiled more concept SUVs than actual, real-life SUVs. There was the XR-PHEV, which actually gave way to a sequel concept, the XR-PHEV II. There was the EX, the GC-PHEV, and today at the Paris Motor Show, the GT-PHEV. At this point, an end-game for all of these Mitsubishi SUV concepts should be in sight, right?
Fortunately, there is. Mitsubishi’s long-term strategy has always been grounded on the objective of becoming a market leader in SUVs. Two of the aforementioned SUV concepts are expected to arrive in production form in the near future. The XR-PHEV II Concept, for instance, is reportedly set to arrive in 2017 as the Outlander Sport, while the production version of the eX Concept, will be packaged as a small crossover to rival the Nissan Juke. No timetable has been set for this model, but it is believed that this model is due for a production call-up when the Outlander Sport is released.
The GT-PHEV Concept that’s saying hello to the world in Paris is likely the long-term wait of the group. It’s been touted as a preview version of the next-generation Outlander, which isn’t expected to be released until 2018 at the earliest. The good news here is that the wheels are supposedly churning within Mitsubishi to finally bring these SUV concepts to life.
2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
At the 2015 Paris Auto Show, Mitsubishi had a funky looking concept known as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S. We knew the current Outlander was getting pretty outdated, and as it turned out, this concept actually previewed what the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander would look like after the SUV went through a facelift. As expected, the 2016 Outlander is now on sale, sporting a similar design to what we saw on the PHEV Concept-S. Now, with the doors to the New York Auto Show wide open, we’ve gotten a look at the Outlander PHEV in production form for the U.S. market.
While the production form does look similar to the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, the PHEV actually took more cues from the front end of the concept than the regular Outlander. This means it will be easy to spot the PHEV in a crowd if you know what to look for. For now, some details about the Outlander PHEV are still top secret, but at least we have some official images and info to go on.
Don Swearingen, the Executive Vice President of MMNA, said, “What makes the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV so special is that it offers the best of both worlds with a balance of electric efficiency and long-range practicality” He continued, “Mitsubishi put its engineering prowess and knowledge to work to create a vehicle that meets the demand of a growing number of consumers who need a car that is capable and environmentally friendly. The Outlander PHEV will offer a high electric range and combined miles per gallon.”
According to Mitsubishi, the PHEV is already the top-selling PHEV in Europe and is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. It’s said to “deliver SUV capabilities and EV fuel economy.” The Outlander is scheduled to hit showrooms and go on sale here in the U.S. by fall of this year. 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4
Since 1978, Mitsubishi has put the Mirage name on a huge variety of cars, from coupes to hatchbacks, wagons to sedans. While the Mirage’s body style may have shifted depending on the model year and market, you can trace at least two common threads throughout the car’s history – small exterior dimensions, and an affordable price point. These days, stateside consumers know the Mirage as a subcompact five-door, while Mitsubishi’s corporate brass probably knows it better as the second biggest seller in the U.S. and an integral factor in keeping the brand afloat. To help bolster the Mirage’s success, Mitsubishi has announced a new sedan variant that promises the same value for money and interior tech as the hatch, plus a slightly revamped exterior appearance.
It’s called the G4, which stands for “global four-door.” Already on sale overseas, Mitsubishi hopes the G4 will attract customers looking for an affordable small car, but are left uninspired by the hatchback body style. In a press release, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Don Swearingen, called the dual Mirage offerings a “formidable one-two punch in the subcompact segment.” Read on to learn if it’s a knockout, or just a glancing blow.
