Everything about the Tesla Model Y looks like the car of the future. From its pod shape, to its silent but explosive acceleration, to its all-encompassing infotainment screen with no physical buttons, the electric-car maker’s new entry-level crossover is more about sensibly reducing gasoline usage. It gives you a peek into the decades to come, and it gives you a rollicking good time while you do it. It’s not just an electric car, but a special vehicle that triggers a powerful emotional response. This is one way to electrify an SUV.
Then there’s Mitsubishi’s way: the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport PHEV. All-electric cars eventually run out of charge, even long-range models like Teslas. So Mitsubishi made a plug-in hybrid whose gasoline engine can help out when you use up the battery or need more power. To keep costs down, the battery isn’t huge and the motors aren’t wildly powerful. And Mitsubishi already makes many gas-powered crossovers, so rather than wasting resources to develop a new one, it retrofitted electric components into its flagship model, the compact Outlander.
The result is a left-brain approach to the segment — the Outlander PHEV makes perfect sense, but it’s an improved present rather than the future. At best, you’ll feel something between mildly impressed and grudgingly accepting. It’s hard to imagine falling in love.
Mitsubishi Introduces Us To A Funny-Named Yet Smart Crossover At The 2019 Geneva Motor Show
For some weird reason, Mitsubishi decided to name its latest plug-in crossover after a ski resort in Switzerland. Mooching off the Swiss, eh? I would have preferred naming it Roger, or Federer. Anyway, Mitsubishi unveiled the Engelberg Tourer at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It seems to have drawn a lot of inspiration from the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept that was revealed in 2016. Could it be the next Outlander?
Mitsubishi to Showcase New Outlander PHEV in Geneva with Better Tech, Revised Looks
The revised 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is set to make its debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and It’s about time. The SUV has been Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle since 2015, an achievement it earned after selling more than 100,000 units in the continent in the last three years. Globally, over 140,000 units of the Outlander PHEV have been sold since the model arrived back in 2013.
2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Less than four months after the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV arrived on U.S. shores in December 2017, Mitsubishi is launching an updated version at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland this March. The updates focus on increased efficiency from this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, but visual updates and interior improvements are also made.
Mitsubishi will announce the full details on March 6, but we already have a good understanding of the changes coming for 2019. The U.S. is expected to get this new model, too, though it might not happen until 2020.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Juro Limited Edition
Mitsubishi launched the third-generation Outlander in 2012 with a redesigned exterior, new technology, and updated engines. More importantly, it also gained a hybrid drivetrain under the PHEV name. This version was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show with a gasoline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors derived from the system used in the i-MiEV city car. The PHEV was a massive success, becoming the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle in 2014 and 2015, with global sales passing the 100,000-unit mark in March 2016. In 2015, the Outlander received an extensive facelift that included a new grille, LED headlamps, and a quieter cabin.
With the PHEV model sliding into second place sales-wise in 2016, behind the redesigned Chevrolet Volt, Mitsubishi is already taking measure to ensure that the hybrid crossover remains competitive until the next-generation model arrives. In the U.K., the Japanese brand just launched the PHEV Juro, a limited-edition model that comes with extra features as standard. Although based on one of the least expensive trims, the Juro is well-equipped and features TomTom navigation and smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, among other features. What’s more, it doesn’t cost more than the model it is based on, enabling customers to make significant savings.
Unfortunately, the Juro isn’t available outside the United Kingdom, so don’t get you’re hopes up on seeing it in North America. But, until Mitsubishi offers something similar here, let’s have a closer look at the latest Outlander PHEV to arrive in British showrooms.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
At the 2015 Paris Auto Show, Mitsubishi had a funky looking concept known as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S. We knew the current Outlander was getting pretty outdated, and as it turned out, this concept actually previewed what the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander would look like after the SUV went through a facelift. As expected, the 2016 Outlander is now on sale, sporting a similar design to what we saw on the PHEV Concept-S. Now, with the doors to the New York Auto Show wide open, we’ve gotten a look at the Outlander PHEV in production form for the U.S. market.
While the production form does look similar to the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, the PHEV actually took more cues from the front end of the concept than the regular Outlander. This means it will be easy to spot the PHEV in a crowd if you know what to look for. For now, some details about the Outlander PHEV are still top secret, but at least we have some official images and info to go on.
Don Swearingen, the Executive Vice President of MMNA, said, “What makes the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV so special is that it offers the best of both worlds with a balance of electric efficiency and long-range practicality” He continued, “Mitsubishi put its engineering prowess and knowledge to work to create a vehicle that meets the demand of a growing number of consumers who need a car that is capable and environmentally friendly. The Outlander PHEV will offer a high electric range and combined miles per gallon.”
According to Mitsubishi, the PHEV is already the top-selling PHEV in Europe and is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. It’s said to “deliver SUV capabilities and EV fuel economy.” The Outlander is scheduled to hit showrooms and go on sale here in the U.S. by fall of this year. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is gearing up take its 4WD 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to the dirt in the Baja Portalegre 500 rally raid.
The specialized race version of the vehicle was specifically developed for the event, and will be piloted by Mitsubishi factory driver Hiroshi Masuoka, who is best known for winning back-to-back victories in the legendary Dakar rally raid in 2002 and 2003. He’s only the fourth driver in Dakar history to win in consecutive years. He also took victory in the 2003 Baja Italy and 2004 UAE Desert Challenge.
In addition to driving duties, Masuoka will also play the part of team captain. Supporting him will be a glut of Mitsubishi personnel, including team manager and technical director Yasuo Tanaka. Tanaka is also an engineering expert from the EV Component Research Department at Mitsubishi. Alongside him will be four engineers from the department.
Organized by the Portuguese Automobile Association, the Baja Portalegre 500 will see its 29th running this year, and will pit competitors against one another in 500 km (311 miles) of dirt, gravel, and punishingly harsh conditions. The event is part of the ninth round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, and over 300 vehicles are expected to take part, including cars, motorcycles, and quads. The Portalegre 500 is also known as a warm-up for the infamous Dakar rally, which is slated to kick off this coming January.
The Baja Portalegre 500 will take place in the Portalegre province of eastern Portugal between October 22nd and 24th. Entrants will see non-stop action over the entirety of the 500 km, halting only for brief 20-minute service intervals.

Rumors have long been swirling that the replacement for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will be based on a compact crossover, but Mitsubishi president Tetsuro Aikawa gave a little more insight about this upcoming performance vehicle. While he didn’t reveal any actual details about the next-gen Evo, Aikawa confirmed that it would get some sort of electrification and stated that it would be the “king” of plug-in vehicles.
Like the Lancer-based Evo, the future high-performance Mitsubishi will retain an all-wheel-drive layout, and it will be both lighter and faster than the production vehicle off which it is based. All signs are pointing to the new Evo being based off the next-generation Mitsubishi ASX, which here in the U.S. is known as the Outlander Sport. As for a timeline, Aikawa said this new performance model will arrive in the “far in the future” in his interview with Autocar. Such a time descriptor can be highly subjective, but this report expects the next-gen ASX/Outlander Sport to debut in 2016.
When it does arrive, this new crossover should resemble the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV Concept that has been touring the auto-show circuit over the last couple of years, and the new Evo model should get a more aggressive design, possibly inspired by the 2014 Evolution Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

The XR PHEV first hit the show circuit in 2013 as a not-production-ready concept, to gauge the public’s interest in a plug-in hybrid SUV. And now, with the 2015 Geneva Auto Show fast approaching, the Japanese automaker has revealed the first images and details on its newest plug-in hybrid SUV, the XR PHEV II. For now, the details remain limited, but the model will be unveiled on March 3, 2015, during the press days in Geneva.
So why is Mitsubishi pulling an Acura and releasing the same concept multiple times? Apparently it must have received mixed reviews on the initial concept, so it went back to the drawing board to create a more production-ready version with a toned-down look. Whether or not the PHEV II will ever see a showroom is up for debate, but I have a feeling it eventually will.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Mitsubishi will unveil a pretty impressive lineup of concept cars that previews the company’s future strategy market. One of them will be the GR-HEV - a concept car that applies the HEV technology for the first time to a one-tonne pickup truck.
This HEV technology combines a clean-diesel engine with electric motors in order to obtain a vehicle that is simple and more affordable than any other electric vehicle. The concept also uses Mitsubishi’s renowned full-time 4WD technology that includes the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system driveline. This system helps the concept deliver high traction and driving performance under all road conditions.
Mitsubishi revealed no details on the concept’s specifications just yet, but it did promise it will deliver an ambitious target of CO2 emissions below 149 g/km, far better than the segment average.
Full details will be unveiled during the concept’s official debut in Geneva.
Most automakers have already begun to offer hybrid versions for at least one SUV in their line-up, so Mitsubishi is actually a little late in the game with this one. The company is currently working on an Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV and will have it ready for the 2012 Paris Auto Show in September. The new model will go on sale in Europe in 2013, but at this point, Mitsubishi hasn’t said anything about bringing it over to the U.S. market.
The new Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid will share the same architecture with the soon-to-be-introduced New Outlander’s ICE versions and will feature a unique drive train combination of front electric motor plus rear electric motor plus front traction/generator petrol engine. It will offer a choice of three driving modes: Pure (Twin Motor 4WD EV), Series (Twin Motor 4WD - EV supported by generator), and Parallel (ICE engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD). Mitsubishi also promised that the new Outlander Hybrid will come with a driving range of 800 kilometers (497 miles).
The Tokyo Motor Show is just around the corner - doors open in December - so it was high time that automakers started revealing their plans, including the over 20 world debuts scheduled. Mitsubishi is starting off its announcements with two new models that will be in attendance in Tokyo. One of them is a second version of the PX-MiEV Concept first unveiled back in 2009. This new concept takes Mitsubishi’s existing EV technology a step forward, delivering more environmental performance and better fuel efficiency than any existing SUV.
The PX-MiEV Concept II uses a unique plug-in hybrid system that combines a small 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with EV technology derived from the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. This system allows the Concept PX-MiEV II to offer an impressive economy of more than 60 km/l (141 mpg) and a cruising range of over 800 km (497 miles).
The hybrid system takes its power from high-capacity batteries that allow the vehicle to cover over 50 km (31 miles) in all-electric mode alone. The driver has a button that allows him to change from Battery Drive Mode (for those residential areas) to pure EV more (for the countryside).

The Evo-loving world was in shambles after Mitsubishi Global Product Director, Gayu Eusegi, announced that the company would be killing off the all-wheel-drive turbocharged Lancer Evolution. The Evo is one of the best models Mitsubishi has ever offered and fans everywhere were shocked that the company would take such extreme measures. A few back pedals later and Mitsubishi President and CEO, Osamu Masuko, calmed the waters by stating that the the Evo X would not be the last of the Evolutions. Now, Masuko has offered even more details for the future of the Evo to Japanese magazine, Best Car, stating that "Mitsubishi is fully intent on producing a high-performance car in the future, albeit green." Yeah, join the club, Masuko.
The rumor has long been that the Evo XI would be a diesel-electric hybrid. Such a powertrain would allow the Evo XI to hustle to 0-60 MPH in under 5 seconds while still receiving better fuel economy than the current Evo. Now, it seems the technology that was unveiled in the PX-MiEV concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show is looking to fit itself into the EVO XI. This would mean a 1.6- liter gasoline engine combined with an electric motor that will take its power from a set of lithium-ion batteries. The electric motors will power the vehicle at low to middle speeds, while the engine will kick on at high speeds. The engine will also provide back up for the motors when their charge runs low. The hybrid system will be combined with Mitsubishi’s S-AWC all-wheel-drive system and active yaw control, technologies that have already been used in the Evo X.
Mitsubishi’s attendance at the Tokyo Motor Show next month should come with a bevy of concept cars in tow to unveil to the automotive world. One of its newest – and Tokyo-bound – showcase vehicles is the PX-MiEV, a next-generation hybrid crossover CUV that the Japanese automaker says was created to maximize fuel efficiency, decrease emissions, all while keeping the Mitsubishi standard of performance at a high level.
The PX-MiEV comes with a 1.6-liter inline-four powerpack for the front wheels and a revolutionary auto-volt plug-in system. Similar to previous Pajero models, the PX-MiEV is capable of running on either front or all-wheel drive, only this time the CUV also has a hybrid mode plus a parallel hybrid system when the PX-MiEV is running on heavy. Mitsubishi also gave some of its Evolution X configurations to the PX-MiEV, including the S-AWC and E-AYC systems, which is capable of triggering power shuffling in any part of the car whenever the need arises.
As far as the car’s interior is concerned, Mitsubishi installed a bevy of technological features, including what looks like two touch-screen configurators found in the front and rear of the car. The PX-MiEV also comes with a revolutionary safety system that – by all accounts – should make its way to a number of Mitsubishi vehicles down the road. The system, which in all appearances looks just like a camera, warns the driver of any potential problems through visual or audio warnings, in addition, of course, to alerts of the vibrating persuasion.
The CUV is set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show where it is expected to be one of Mitsubishi’s meal tickets during the two-week event.

"The Eclipse Concept-E suggests that performance and fuel efficiency need not be mutually exclusive," said Ulrich Walker, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. "E-Boost is environmentally friendly technology, but it’s also pure driving fun. The Concept-E is proof that hybrid technology can do as much for power and performance as it can for fuel consumption," Walker said.
